Players Eligible for amnesty: Al Jefferson, Devin Harris, Paul Millsap, Derrick Favors, Raja Bell

Reasonable candidates for amnesty: None

Most likely amnesty decision: Not use it. Utah is another team without any bad long-term money on the books. Even if the team wanted to shed Jefferson or Devin Harris, they could easily get a better return in a trade than cutting them via amnesty. Utah’s front office has a series of huge decisions to make the next two summers and it’s unlikely their own amnesty provision will factor in any of them.

i know it's a bit early.... anyway we can waive Raja's contract without cap concerns, if needed (his contract isn't so big, but IMHO it's still some waste of money).

All the others have market value, so no reason to waive'em.

As I understand it, we'd still have to pay his full contract; it just wouldn't count against the cap. So the money would be wasted either way.

... but I, of course, would be happy to see it happen.

Ya, you still have to pay him the money so it wouldn't do us any good when we're not over the cap.

I don't think we will ever see the Jazz amnesty a player. It's just not in the culture of the franchise to pay a guy money that he hasn't "earned".

i thought the former team would only have to pay the difference that the new team pays him. like if the contract was 10 mil, and new team acquires him for 6, then old team only pays 4, not against the cap.

yeah, i thik so.

plus, that opens cap space if we sign a player in Free agency, or with our trade exception (from Memo trade)

no. but it is only applicable to players who were signed before the current CBA. so 5 years? 4 years? as long as the old longest contracts are.

They are better off using it as an Al Jefferson injury insurance clause if they don't need the cap space. It's the same as waiving if they don't nerd cap space.

Weren't there some reports about a month back claiming that the league would consider allowing teams the ability to trade the amnesty much like a TPE? If that's the case then definitely hold into it and use it in trade with a franchise burdened with bad contracts, I.e. Orlando.

They couldn't do that until the new CBA. Won't happen.

even with a big injury (and i don't want it, for nobody), he has market value as expiring contract. Same for Harris or Millsap, who adds a way less costly salary. Sap is an "iron man", Al had only one major injury on his history, and seems in a career shape. Harris is a bit more injury prone. Anyways, i think the CBA allow the league to leave "injury exceptions" to the salary cap in case of very bad injuries (i know it was the case for the previous CBA)
