Scott Layden is interviewing for the assistant GM position with San Antonio. Please, SA, give it to him. Get him off the Utah bench, please!
Update: Congrats to Scott Layden. Good luck!

Did we just trade Scott Layden for Dennis Lindsey?

Could this be a bit of Sloan's guys moving on and Corbin getting his guys in place? It was interesting how Corbin never really had a chance to assemble his staff when he took over since it was mid-season. With the recent personnel changes it sure feels a bit like a changing of the guard so to speak.

Well, he ain't got the job yet. But there's hope.
Corbin likes Layden. He would probably keep him if it were his choice. I'm hoping Layden leaves and Corbin hires two more assistant coaches. He needs them.

Layden wasn't a very good GM to say the least. I have no beef with him as an end of the bench assistant coach. He hasn't done anything that has stood out as good or bad but I could say the same thing about 99% of all the assistant coaches that have been in the NBA.

Layden has always had an unwarranted bad rep on here...

I think he has been awesome. All the times he has spoken at conferences, pre-games or even on the radio I've been nothing but impressed. He knows his basketball. The GM disaster is chalked up to Isaiah Thomas in my book not Layden.
Makes me wonder were he is in the business flow chart and did he even have a fair look or was he not really even considered for the GM job. I get the feeling that the front office was looking to add an extra guy and not replace someone thus they wanted to keep Layden were he was to continue his and the jazz's success.

i don't usually like to contradict you bro, but the mistake he made with allan houston was so epic, it prompted the nba to change its rules, and allowed thomas to dig his hole even deeper than he could have by himself.
http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Allan_HoustonDespite the accolades, though, Houston's lasting legacy may be something that happened off the court: In 2001, Houston signed a maximum contract extension with the Knicks. Houston's yearly salary of over $20 million made him virtually untradeable and injury problems would burden the Knicks. Houston missed 32 games in 2003-04 due to a knee injury, and despite claims in the summer of 2004 that he would be ready to play the next season (he even refused to have surgery on his knee that summer), he played in only 20 games that season because his injury hadn't completely healed. The knee injury would eventually force Houston to announce his retirement, on October 17, 2005.
.
.
"Allan Houston Rule"
In 2005, the NBA agreed on a new collective bargaining agreement (CBA). The most striking innovation granted NBA teams a one-time option to release a player without his contract counting against the luxury tax threshold regardless of how long or how rich the contract was. The provision did not negate the player's contract, a team's obligation to pay the player, or the impact on the salary cap; it merely removed the player's salary when computing the luxury tax. This rule benefited teams that were in danger of facing the "luxury tax" penalty, a tax paid on salaries spent above a certain threshold of total team salary. The correct term is "amnesty clause," but because the team with the worst problems was the Knicks, and their worst financial liability was Houston, it was quickly dubbed the "Allan Houston Rule."[11] Ironically, the Knicks chose not to use the exception for Houston, but for forward Jerome Williams instead, since the Knicks correctly predicted Houston would retire due to lingering injuries over his last two seasons. As a result, Houston's contract counted a total of $40 million against the salary cap, but did not count towards the luxury tax due to his medical retirement, and insurance covered most of the team's payments to him.

That's overstating things to say the least. It was named the Allan Houston rule because he was widely considered to be the worst contract in the NBA at the time, but it wasn't his contract that prompted the exception.
Also, Layden is a good mind and good coach and good exec. Remember he did a great job of making moves in the FO during the 90s. There's a reason he was the man hired to run the league's most capitalized franchise. He just made some bad choices and overpaid for mediocre players. As an assistant coach and assistant GM, he's a great hire. He's had a fall from grace and its humbled him. I like the guy.

Layden was brought to the Jazz through nepotism. No one knows how many of the personnel decisions while he was in the front office belonged to him or were made for him with or without his agreement. Larry was a strong owner.
When he went to NY, it looked like he was way over his head. Maybe he was really the assistant GM for the Jazz. Perceived favors owed and nepotism brought him back to the Jazz and that was a mistake. It was time for him to move on.
Of course he is knowledgeable about the pro game. He's been involved in it long enough. The fact that no one until now has considered him for any front office position after he left NY speaks volumes.
I think he'll be okay as an assistant GM in SA. SA has strong leadership and Layden won't be making decisions, only supplying stats and recommendations.
It will open up at least one, if not two, assist coaching spots which the Jazz need to fill with experienced guys who have a coaching mentality. If you've ever watched Layden coach a game, he doesn't have the necessary tactical and strategic thinking to win.
I hope he gets the SA job.

I didn't realize Layden was the one that made that decision or was ever part of the Houston deal. I guess he was definitely part of that.
However wasn't that more of a "Local New York" decision made by Isiah?
I just wonder more so that it wasn't Layden that messed up New York. They had so many "chiefs in the kitchen" crowding up that front office it was nothing but bad decision after bad decision on a path that kept changing directions.
Oddly enough it started clearing up after Isiah left, not when Layden left.

Good news, and best of luck to him. Nice guy, but not exactly a mastermind on the bench from what I could tell.
