I thought that teams were crazy when they skipped over Lawson when he was drafted pretty late in the 1st round (I can't recall exactly where he fell, but I was surprised), and I think that he has been a good player.

However, $12M per season?? The new contract will pay him more than Rondo and Nash, and just below Tony Parker and Westbrook.

I don't think that he is that much better than Dragic ($7.5M), Brooks ($3.2M), Jarrett Jack ($5M) or even Robinson ($1M).

Am I the one who is crazy?

For those thinking that the Jazz will somehow get a bargain on resigning Big Al or Milsap, the most recent signings indicate otherwise. I see Big Al's contract at least $12M-$15M per year, and Milsap at least $10M-$12M, maybe more for each.

Doesn't surprise me at all, to be honest. Very solid point guard that shoots a higher percentage. I think he's somewhat better than Dragic and significantly better than Brooks, Jack, and Robinson

I agree regarding Millsap and Jefferson, but would put their minimum value at $11.5M and $13M, respectively. Unless they are willing to play here for a discount, I see them playing elsewhere for more than that.

I am not surprised at all....... Lawson is going to be very good for the next 6-7 years......

People constantly decry players being overpaid, but the structure of the NBA currently means you have to overpay to keep these players. It's not a question of what is Ty Lawsons value in vacuum. It's about how much would Denver pay to keep Ty vs. letting him walk. Sure, you might think he's only an 8M a yr PG compared to other elite point guards, but is he worth more than 8M a yr compared to the alternative of letting him walk for nothing? With no cap space to sign a PG away from another team? Clearly the Nuggets think so, and I agree.

Not to mention he's a top 10 PG, perfect for their system, and vital to any chance of contending. Easily worth it.

Considering the market it's not outrageous.

I've looked into this a little more.

To put Lawson's $12M per year average deal in perspective, he will be making about the same as Tony Parker. Only CP3, DWill, DRose and Westbrook make more as PGs. All these guys are All Stars, and one of if not the most important player on their team.

A PG making more than $10M per year is pretty rare. Dragic and Lowry, which I think are in the same stratosphere skill-wise and important to your team wise as Lawson, are making between $6M-$8M per year.

Lawson is going to have to be at least the 2nd most important/best player on the Nuggets moving forward with that kind of salary. Given their approach to a non-All Star team, he might have to be the most important/best player on the team.

Deals like this are going to kill the Jazz next Summer.

I think Lawson is a potential all-star, and not in a JaVale McGee is a potential all-star sort of way.

Lawson is awesome.....fast....can create and set up other players.

$12m is a lot......$10m is more reasonable, but he gets a premium.

I would trade Milsap or Jefferson for him in 2 seconds. He would be the type and quality of PG we need.

He is one level below a big star......a solid starter......fast as hell......real JETS.

I just looked at the FA list of 2013 and started crying. We will have cap space if we want, but no one to spend it on.

I expected this and he's worth it based on the market. We are talking about a guy will only be 25 y/o this week and last year averaged 16 and 6 on 48% FG, 82% FT, 36% from 3 point land and only 2.4 turnovers. That is very impressive plus he has room too grow. Lowery as a starter was a long ways away from that depsite being a year and a half older although he's a better defender than Lawason. Dragic hasn't proven anything since he has yet to play well as a starter for a significant period of time. So I think its justified he's paid more than them. Rondo, I don't know but I just see Lawson being so dangerous on the court in his prime with his strong playmaking and scoring abilities while rondo's scoring can leave alot to be desired which makes him less dangerous than lawson imo.

But this is another reason I'm sure at least Jefferson is staying if not him and Millsap. We got too much cap room and no one to spend it on in 2013 or 2014 unless somthing magical happens which you can never count on happening in Utah. Only thing left in Free agency thats worth major money are old guys like Dirk and Kobe or RFA's which you can never count on.

Overspending on guys you don't really need just because you have cap space is just about the worst move a GM can make. Do I even need to cite the countless examples from the past five years?

I'd trade anybody on the jazz roster for him in a heartbeat so no.

Yea if you don't need them, but who said we don't need Jefferson? We needed him last year and I have seen nothing so far to change that.

And your assuming he will get paid alot which he could but its not guarenteed. I mean how many players were offered the max extension and turn it down? Jefferson is one of the only players I can think of that did that if you discount the heat big 3.

Curry only got 1 million per year less.

10 million per year sounds much better to me but it's not THAT shocking. Good player... dunno if he's THAT good but they needed to keep him.

Holiday is also off the table with similar deal. Jennings will be available as RFA.
