Ante Tomic
The guy is having a nice year in Spain and the Euro League. Is he in the plans for the Jazz or would they trade his rights?

Well he was suppose to be a Jazzman, but I don't remember what happened.
I don't know wasn't he a Center. I don't know if Jazz need a Center right. Kanter and Favors are both nice Centers, and Favors works great at PF.

Wonder if a 2nd rounder would do it.

Re: Ante Tomic
He signed a three year contract in July 2012 with Barcelona with a fourth year option. I can't imagine the buyout on that is cheap. It seems to me that if he really wanted to play in the NBA (and if the Jazz really wanted him) he would've come over this year rather than sign that new deal.
Maybe he'll do like Tiago Splitter and end up in the NBA many years after being drafted. Who knows?

You know he's coming when the Spurs trade for his draft rights.

I tried to follow him on this forum a while back:

I'm afraid he was a waste of a pick though.

In '03-'04, Jerry Sloan coached the ESPN predicted "worst team of all time" to 42-40.

Re: Ante Tomic
Well let's keep it real. He's coordinated, good IQ, 7'2, and runs the floor. He looks like he's been in the gym or something. Not 220lbs anymore. 250? This aint Ajinca and right now he looks like the top young center in Europe. 2nd of all centers behind Bourousis. And the only reason Bourousis isn't in the NBA with Spurs is because it was rumored he was asking for the full MLE.
Contract buyouts are a negotiation and the NBA team can cover some or most of it and obviously pay Tomic a lot more than Barcelona. I'd be shocked if teams like the Spurs weren't all over this (Splitter is gonna get a big contract this summer from some NBA team). I'd love Tomic for my Nuggets

Let's forget him. It was waste of pick. We drafted him and Tadija Dragicevic. In that year's draft.
But we could have at least Goran Dragic or athletic Bill Walker.

I think he could still be a valuable chip going forward....... Ginobili didn't come over right away, neither did Splitter or Scola....... With guys like Shved having a fair amount of success in the NBA, I think Tomic could very well decide to come in 3-4 years, and the Jazz holding his rights is nothing to laugh at.......

NBA teams can only pay $500k towards a buyout. I'm not sure your second point is valid either. I can't find specific numbers on Tomic, but in 2008 FC Barcelona signed Juan Carlos Navarro (formerly of the Grizzlies) to a 4-year €9.5M ($12.7M) deal with a €10M buyout. If Tomic's salary is anything like that it'd be next to impossible for him to come out ahead with a move to the NBA prior to the end of his contract.

Yes, if only we could have Bill Walker! (He's not in the NBA any more).

Exactly. He's not coming over any time soon, but that doesn't mean he's never coming over or that he's not a valuable asset.

Unless the new CBA changed it (and I didn't think it did) the buyout is 600k. My point was that these Euro clubs are looking to profit from the buyout so it is negotiable. European clubs know the NBA rules and know they have to bend if they want to get paid. That and you don't want to hold someone back either because it can bite you in the ass when they dog it next year on your dime.

We're both wrong:

But your point is well taken, the buyout exists as a starting point for negotiations.

Re: Ante Tomic
Maybe Tomic can get the same or more money in Europe, that plays a big factor, especially when he has to leave behind his friends and family. It's a very difficult decision.

Re: Ante Tomic
Seeing how things unfolded, I don't think either party was ever truly interested in making something happen. Shame, because he's a legit NBA talent, although it wouldn't have been an easy transition and as the time passed it wouldn't have gotten any easier. Oh well, the Jazz have had an abundance of young big men over the years and Tomic is probably pretty happy with his situation.
Hard to call that a "wasted pick", considering it was #44 and only one player drafted after him was able to stick in the NBA (Dragic, great job by the Suns). It was a nice gamble on a talented prospect, sometimes things just don't work out.

Yea good find I should have looked it up. Barcelona is 9-8 so far on the year so its not like we are talking about breaking up a dynasty. I'd just be shocked if some NBA club was willing to do a million dollar buyout and they turned it down. That's a big chunk of some clubs budgets over there.

Re: Ante Tomic
The real reason Jefferson won't be back and why Jazz fan's should be mad as hell if Tomic is not bought out & signed this summer. You'd have to be blind not to want the 25 year old future Euro League MVP.
http://basketball.realgm.com/article/22 ... -13-Season
8. Ante Tomic - FC Regal Barcelona (Source Real GM)
2012-13 (Euroleague): 11.7 points, 5.7 rebounds and 1.4 blocks in 24 minutes
2011-12 (Euroleague): 6.7 points, 3.7 rebounds in 15 minutes
The reason why Ante Tomic is on this list is not the numbers he produces, which are similar to 2009-10 and 2010-11 seasons, or the results achieved by FC Regal Barcelona. No doubt, FC Regal Barcelona is currently the best team in Europe and Tomic is one of team's main strengths.
The consistency of Tomic in Euroleague Top 16 stage is the difference as the Croatian center constantly plays as an MVP on every game. Tomic became a game changer as he leads the Euroleague in plus-minus (+/-) rating with 13.1 points per 50 possessions. Tomic finished in double scoring figures in all ten Top 16 stage games so far and if the 25-year-old center maintains this pace, he has all the potential to be considered as a candidate to win MVP award in near future.

Maybe he'll prove me wrong, but he looks like he'd get killed in the NBA. He looks like he's got the build of a young AK without the quickness or leaping ability.
