Remember in the 2009-2010 season when the Jazz had the following wing players?

Wesley Matthews (2025 mins)
Ronnie Brewer (1662 mins)
CJ Miles (1497 mins)
Kyle Korver (952 mins)

Who did the Jazz keep out of that group? CJ Miles. The rest were all gone the next year. Sure, maybe they wanted a little more money than the Jazz wanted to pay, but that's a poor excuse (IMO) for keeping arguably the worst player from that group.

Here's what those players made the next year:

Wesley Matthews $5.8M
Ronnie Brewer $4.8M
CJ Miles $3.7M
Kyle Korver $5.0M

In addition the Jazz signed Raja Bell to a 3-year deal that started at $3M/year. In summary the Jazz elected to pay Raja and CJ $6.7M over keeping any of those other guys.

It is frustrating, but I think that the group we have now is pretty comparable.

Hayward > Matthews
Burks = Brewer
Foye > Korver
Carrol > Marvin > Miles

Of course, our worst player in the group makes the most money.

Sure they're comparable, but it's three years later and Deron is gone. That's what frustrates me: the Jazz made those decisions as a contending playoff team with Deron under contract. Can you really blame him for expressing his frustration ("That's why I signed a 3-year deal")?

Don't get me wrong, I'm not saying "oh, we should've done this to appease Deron and then he might've stayed!"

Rather it seems to again illustrate to me that this franchise doesn't have the capacity to overspend when necessary to compete, nor do they have the ability to suck when it's prudent for the future well-being of the franchise.

We're a Goldilocks franchise: never too good and never too bad.

Was CJ the only one that was still under contract? I am sure that they would've preferred to keep Korver or Mathews but AK's contract was really a killer.

Even if CJ was still under contract the next year, I would rather have re-signed Matthews than sign Raja Bell and Josh Howard. Hayward could have benefited from Howard's minutes. I definitely see it as the wrong decision.

If you remember. Wes had a front loaded contract.
