Greg(g) Monroe not likely to sign extension?

Per WT and GB, it sounds like Falk is recommending that Monroe NOT sign an extension this summer with the Pistons.

This is relevant to Jazz fans because we've got a couple of guys on our roster from that same draft class (Hayward, Favors) and we've been linked to a third (Bledsoe) via trade rumors.

Will it become the new norm for rookies to forego extensions in order to become unrestricted free agents sooner in their careers? Is this another result of the Super Team phenomenon?

David Faulk (Monroe's agent) did the same think with Roy Hibbert and he got a max contract. I think it just makes sense to not sign an extension especially for a big man, although it does have its risk.

I still don't think any of these guys will become UFA until their third contract. None of them will risk taking the QO. I can't think of the last player that did this. Can you?

it might, until one player will suffer a career ending injury during his fourth and final year after electing not to sign a big, guaranteed money extension, and then it will stop.

Greg Monroe will be retained by the Pistons. They will just have to pay him a whole lot more!

Right, they become RFAs. It's not clear whether Falk is advocating taking the QO and becoming a UFA after year 5.

This will be very interesting going forward. We seem to have drafted some really humble guys lately. Dudes that wouldn't mind playing their whole careers in Utah, or making less money. And I think KOC did that on purpose. I'm sure he doesn't want to relive the D-Will predicament. But maybe I'm wrong... Maybe deep down they are just like every other stereotypical NBA player, chasing the big lights, and fortune. If they are as humble as I think, I could see most of our core 4 signing extensions when they are eligible. Especially Favors and Hayward. They seem like the most humble of the 4. We'll see though. The next couple of years will definitely be interesting, and a little nerve-racking.

Oh I figured it was a given that he wouldn't do that. I guess it'd be interesting though. God, who's the last semi high profile guy to take the QO on their rookie deal? That'd be interesting to see a write up on somewhere. Guys expected to make 10+ mil per year who took the QO to fast track their UFA status.

Yeah I doubt someone takes less one year, to become a UFA quicker. With a little patience, Detroit could be a good team in a couple of years. Monroe plus Drummond, and if Knight and Singler reach their potential, then they have their future picks. I'd resign if I were him.

From a Jazz perspective, I rather retain Kanter and Favors, though I haven't seen Monroe play much.
