That’s right, I said it, I think it could take 2014 & 2015 to get the roster right for the long term. When a team turns the roster over and goes young they generally lose. I think despite the quality young talent on the Jazz a big roster shake up will impact the club in the short term. This kind of roster turnover probably means a losing record for the next couple of years.
With the new CBA I think drafting well and not overpaying FAs is what it will take to build a contender. I also think it will be more like the NFL in terms of the same teams not constantly being in the cellar.
The blueprint should be pretty simple.
Keep, Favors, Kanter, Hayward, and Burks. No question there. 16,536,000 (Salary)
Draft well. First option trade up for Oladipo. Second option draft well.
1st rounders (Schroder, Karasev)
2 rounder (Wolters, Jaiteh, Ennis, or Roberson)
Sign Ante Tomic (buy-out counts towards cap) 3 years 12 million (at least)
Trade Example: Marvin Williams Jr for Brandon Roy, Barea and Henk Norel
Sign Henk Norel (athletic/skilled 7 footer)
Acquire big contract like Okafor for Evans
Keep the books clear of long term salaries of vets. Look towards 2014 and 2015 draft. If the season is a trainwreck you get Wiggins or Parker. If it is a growing season maybe you still get Super Mario or Exum.
The Norel trade and Tomic singings make sense because those guys would fit well alongside existing talent on the Jazz. Favors & Tomic…. Kanter & Norel for example. Two sets of twin towers without the huge defensive liabilities you might expect.

Tomic/ Norel/ Carroll
Hayward/ Karasev Waive Roy
SG?? Burks/Karasev/ Cheap Vet? Overseas Prospect (I’ve listed a few examples before) (Exum, Mario Wiggins 2014)
PG??? Burks/Schroder/Wolters/ Cheap Vet? Barea (trade or work buyout by next summer)
Sign 3 heap free agents (Cheap Vets, D-League, Overseas Prospects)
If the 2014 draft looked like the 2013 draft I wouldn’t suggest this plan but the next couple drafts should be pretty nice. But I think missing the playoffs for just one year is a stretch. It might take two years. Young talent takes time to grow. Super Mario for example was born in 1995. So it could take a couple years in the NBA before he really shines.

as to your post, i completely agree that the rebuilding will take more than one year. i think it is pretty much a given. i'm pretty much on board with most of what you wrote and agree with most of it, though saying that if next season is a train-wreck then we get wiggins or parker is more wishful thinking, since we still need to win the lottery or get a really good draft spot, like top 3 if not top 2 (wiggins goes #1, parker #2 or #3).

btw, i'll be down with either exum of mario hezonja (is that the super mario you meant?). but i'm not sure exum will declare next season.

edit: the t-wolves appear to gearing towards releasing roy, so we need to think on a different trade.

Is this proposal to ensure that the Jazz get a good pick next year?

I've read that Tomic's buyout is about $6M. The Jazz would have to pay him at least $5M-$6M per year, which would be in the ballpark of Brandon Wright and perhaps even Landry, so that he could afford the buyout.

Not sure what the Jazz are getting out of the proposed Minn trade. An overpaid Barea (even with his great playoff run, Robinson won't get more than a 2-3 yr deal at $4M-$5M per year, and I would rather have him. Even though Minn has needed bigs, they haven't even tried to bring Norel over.

I would only do the types of trades with Minn or the Wizs if I got picks back for taking their overpaid trash.

Next year Roy & Barea would take up space on the cap (which is good). Roy expires and Barea expires the following year. I don't really like him... but he takes up cap space in the short term and Norel comes along with.

The terms of Tomic's buyout has not been made public as far as I know. And with these type of buyouts they are always a negotiation.

As far as next years draft. My only points are if the team struggles there will be good talent available in the draft. Wiggins and Parker is a lot bigger prize than Noel or McLemore obviously. But Hezonja and Exum (why not come out if you are top 10) would be nice... and who knows how far down Marcus Smart could slide (8, 10, 12??)

who knows. ask marcus smart. i pointed out that exum may not declare because of comments made by the broadcasting crew during the NHS. it is in a long while though, so obviously it is up in the air and i wouldn't make any definitive statements about his status next year at this point. it was more of a side comment.
