Let's Play GM 2013

Post#1 » by Bullet » Sat May 11, 2013 9:39 am

Just thought of starting a "game" to while away our time this offseason.

Simple mechanics: Fill out the Jazz roster accordingly, state how you're going to acquire the new players (FA, trade, sign-and-trade, etc.), then give your reasoning/rationale. Readers can "rate" your roster based on projected WIN-LOSS, potential, general like/dislike, etc...

Here's the format:

JAZZ 2013 ROSTER
==================

PG
SG
SF
PF
C

Sixth Man:

Role Players (2):

Bench (5-7):

Rationale:

PG Calderon (FA: 3/30M, 3rd yr TEAM option)
SG Hayward
SF Williams
PF Favors
C Kanter

Sixth Man: Burks

Role Players:
Carroll (FA: 4/12M)
Evans

Bench:
Tinsley (FA: 1/MIN)
McGrady (FA: 1/MIN)
O'Neal (FA: 1/MIN)
Schroeder (DRAFT: #14)
Adetokunbo (DRAFT: #21)
Murphy (DRAFT: #46)

Rationale:

REBUILD. The season will be played out to focus on the development and improvement of the youngins. Evans is given a bigger role, probably 18-20 mpg. FAs are signed to complement (Calderon, Carroll) and mentor (McGrady, O'Neal) the C4.

The elder FAs are hoped to provide valuable insight because of their previous roles as focal points of other franchise's offenses. Imagine McGrady tutoring Burks and Hayward on how to read defenses; and O'Neal teaching Favors and Kanter how to anchor the defense and score on the post.

Adetokunbo is drafted but will be asked to stay in Europe; Schroeder will be an understudy to Calderon; Murphy will be the 5th big who can drain the outside shot.

Jazz maintain cap flexibility.

I like it too but I don't believe that will happen. Scary for owner + minimum salary cap restriction.

PS.
And I counted only $42 millions salary cap before 2013/2014 FA with Hyward+Millsap+Favors making $30 millions per season.

Pelicans want Eric Gordon out and dont want to pay him. Trade GSW pick with Burks for Eric Gordon and Ryan Anderson (if they want either Millsap or Big Al then throw them their way by sign and trade). Jazz then sign Jarret Jack to a 3 year contract.

PG Jack Mo Williams Shroeder
SG Gordon Mo Williams Hayward
C Favors Kanter
PF Anderson Favors Evans Marvin Williams
SF Hayward Marvin Willaims Carroll

Prediction 50-32, Much better defensive team, open floor with 3 point shooters throughout, PG can generate offense.
Play with the Pass, Play with a Purpose, and Play with Pace along with Obvious Unselfishness....Coach Snyder says the sky is purple than Jazz players say nice purple sky! LONG LIVE THE MAD SCIENTIST!!!!

You aren't forced to give out contracts to meet the salary floor. You could have 15 minimum players if you wanted. However short you are of the salary floor at the end of the year, that money is distributed equally among all the players you have under contract.

You are absolutely right. But calling minimum salary cap a myth is almost like calling luxury tax a myth. It's not a hard restriction ofcourse but having players at 40M and paying them 55M is a nonsense. My bet is Utah will not have next season cap (and corresponding payroll) less then 50M.

There is still a minimum. Why not bring in other players, as long as they aren't going to hinder certain players?

this works in theory. but then reality kicks in and you realize your coach is still corbin, which should answer the question.

The real decision the Jazz FO is making is between Continuity, Cap Flexibility, and Cash Considerations.

So basically we'd be the Hornets...I mean, Pelicans...except with Jarret Jack instead of Vasquez and Derrick Favors instead of Anthony Davis. That sounds like a 50-32 team to me.

I know people want to see more of the young guys. But if you remove competition for playing time you do everyone a disservice. Improve the team the best you can and ask the young guys to step up and earn the playing time they get. That is the only way that works.
