Looking over who has PG needs above the Jazz, I would say it is at least 2-3 teams. If 2-3 PGs are selected before the Jazz at #14, then the Jazz are most certainly drafting BPA instead of need.

One of those teams that potentially would select a PG is Dallas at #13. OKC is sitting at #12.

Perkins is a huge weight for OKC. His contract is putting them into tax payer territory and they need either a better center or a cheaper center.

If you were the Jazz, would you trade the #21 pick for OKC's #12 pick and Perkins?

With the #12 and #14 picks, the Jazz greatly improve the quality of players they could draft, and also greatly improve their odds at bundling these picks for a top 10 pick to grab the player that they really want from this draft.

The Jazz will need to sign a 3rd big regardless, have the money this next season, and will have an expiring in Perkins the following season before Kanter or Burk contracts are extended.

Any reason that OKC doesn't jump all over this?

Is there another team with a better pick that would be interested in unloading a player and their pick for Utah's #21 pick (or even the #14) that the Jazz would entertain?

The big question is whether OKC would rather just amnesty Perkins and pay his salary minus whatever the waiver claim is (if there even is one) and keep the #12 pick.

I don't think OKC does it... give up a player, AND slide in the draft? I know about their salary issues... but it still seems to me like Perkins is worth a BIT more... no? I'd love a guy like Perkins. Thats toughness we haven't seen around here in a LONG time.

It would help to list Perkins' salary. $8.5m next year and $9.2m the following.

What are the max contracts that Hayward and Favors can get the 1st year of their extensions?

I would do it if the Jazz knew for sure (had another trade in place) to move #12 and #14 up for one of the elite pg's this draft or one was available at #12.

We do not have any CAP space to absorb a contract until July. Our contracts are not done until June 30. Until this time we need to meet the normal trade rules.

Well, that puts a damper on things.

So, the only way that the Jazz move up is to package its picks (possible if it is for the right player) or give up one or more of its players on contract next year (unlikely)?

I'm still a little unclear on the timing of this. Specifically, can the Jazz renounce their rights to Al, Millsap etc. right now? Or do they have to wait until July?

I've been looking and can't seem to find the answer on Larry Coon's site.

Edit: so free agents don't become "free" until July 1. And the Jazz's tax/cap number is evaluated on June30/July 1 based on who is under contract, so yeah, what keb said.

Yes, until after the July moratorium. Then deals reliant on the CAP can be made, like S&T, use CAP space in uneven deals, etc.

I would prefer the Jazz exploit the value of their impending cap space in service of attaining 2014 draft assets.

I believe there will be teams desperate to get under the cap at the trade deadline, and have a hunch, based on some of KOC's comments, that management is counting on that dynamic coming into play.

You know, the Draft really should happen after free agency begins. Just delay the draft two weeks.

And this is exactly why I don't want to hear any Jazz fans bitching when the front office doesn't sign anyone big this offseason.

Because next year teams will be lining up trying to get out from under horrible cap situations.

^ Agree. It seems like the Jazz often try to walk too fine a line by being very conservative financially while also being tremendously careful to avoid alienating their fanbase.

My hope for this summer and the 2014 season is that the young guys are given the reins regardless of short-term outcome, and management has the balls to suck in service of a more competitive future. Wait... no one sig that.
