Jazz 2017-2018 Season Thread

Post#1 » by stitches » Mon Oct 16, 2017 12:13 pm

Thread for miscellaneous Jazz stuff here... The season is starting in a couple of days so... here we go....

Here's something I found on SI from anonymous NBA scouts:
https://www.si.com/nba/2017/10/10/nba-scouts-preview-northwest-thunder-nuggets-jazz-russell-westbrook-carmelo-anthonyUTAH
JAZZ: WILL THEIR DEFENSE KEEP THEM AFLOAT?

They’re a slow, low-possession, clock-control team that prides itself on defense, toughness and making the other team’s life miserable. They can be the best defensive team in the league, and with an average offense—that puts them into the playoffs for sure. . . . Rodney Hood is their X-factor. They absolutely need him to take that big jump to fill Gordon Hayward’s shoes. The opportunity and timing are great. They don’t need him to score 30; they grind out wins and just need him to get it done late in games. Hood definitely has more to his offensive game than he’s shown. He’s confident and patient on the ball, he can run some pick-and-roll, and he can shoot. . . . I like the fit for Ricky Rubio. They play to his strengths by emphasizing defense—he’s strong on the ball—and they aren’t a team that absolutely needs shooting from his spot. That said, some of Minnesota’s late-game struggles could travel with him. He’ll help keep their ball movement up in the half-court and he should pair well with Rudy Gobert on pick-and-roll. . . . Derrick Favors probably needs to get traded to a team where he can be the starting center rather than a guy who splits times at two positions and winds up stuck in mismatches. . . . Donovan Mitchell was the most impressive rookie at Summer League. He’s crazy long for a two guard. . . . Another reason they might be better than people think is that Hood, Favors, Dante Exum and Alec Burks all under-performed last year, mostly due to injury. Give them average health, and all of those guys are quality contributors.

An interesting thing I've noticed people keep repeating...

2016-2017 They are alright, but who's gonna be their go-to guy?
2017-2018 ZOMG they lost Gordan Heyword, who's gonna be their go-to guy now?

Does anybody of "them" out there consider concept of go-to team? Or it takes too much more mental efforts than whatever-one-guy talks?

The real decision the Jazz FO is making is between Continuity, Cap Flexibility, and Cash Considerations.

Come mid-December trade Thabo, Jerebko and a 2nd for Mirotic and cash?

Uh, better a offer x Bobby Portis?

Opening game we had six guys score in double figures and not one of them was named Rodney Hood. Denver is a weak defensive team, so this was not a great test for the Jazz offense, but hopefully last night was the beginning of Jazz "Go-to-team!" Go Jazz!!!

And great finish too. Last year I remember a lot of pretty weak game ends... and honestly don't remember any so strong for some years..

Early feelings are that some of the fundamental issues with last year’s roster appear solved. Too bad G is gone, this team plus Hurrdurr would be a real force.

Mitchell looks at least adequate coming in as the backup 1. Shelvin & Raul played with effort but those guys simply are kinda fortunate to be in the league. I didn’t feel at all like the bench backcourt was a step backwards. Burks better stay healthy though.

Udoh is surprisingly adequate also. Having him as opposed to Lyles or Boris as a 3rd big means Utah doesn’t have to play small in order to avoid trotting out a liability.

I think these improvements provide options that sort of cascade into being better able to leverage our strengths.

Season opener brought a strong effort in the second half but also showed how much more the team needs to gel. The first half Denve absolutely had their way with anyone on the court. Then a switch was turned on by JJ and the type of hoops I would love to see with this team cam roaring to life. The defense as smothering and that led to some quick and easy hoops. Harping made a statement regarding pundits statements that I found interesting. "Nobody has brought up Alex Burks' name at all" or something like that. AB brought it and it was fun to watch him in all aspects of the game. If the players continue to buy into this game plan, this team could really be a tough out. If they try to mimic other teams with individual play, it will be a long difficult road. I was encouraged by JJ, Jingles, and Favor's leadership and energy an now the led by example of team play and Rudy was terrific. His hands have really improved. Fun game! Lets hope there are many more like this.

Not sure how the Jazz can justify paying Hood this off-season.

Arguably the same can be said for Alec Burks and Dante Exum. :( All three of them have missed a lot of games due to injury. In a perfect world they would all re-sign at half their healthy value recognizing that they might miss half the games during their next contracts.

That is really surprising. Especially since he couldn't even walk himself off the floor. Low pain tolerance? Wasn't sure what kind of injury and was just playing it safe by not walking/hobbling off himself?

Weird. Good, but weird.

That's... weird. Rodney might have the lowest pain tolerance on the team. That's the third time I've thought he's died for the season based on his reactions and it turned out to be something relatively minor. He still doesn't play well when he's not 100% so... hopefully they take their time getting him back on the court.
