No too keen on taking on Teague's contract, I'm sure you understand.

As a Wolves fan, this is interesting/familiar to hear. I was wondering how Ricky Rubio could possibly be averaging only 5 assists a game, but also it seemed like every new coach that came in for the Wolves tried their own thing with Rubio and eventually figured out that you just have to put the ball in his hands and let him run the offense. He's got his warts as a player, but he hits players with passes at angles that no one else would even see. He's just one of those guys that even when he wasn't putting up stats, the numbers were ALWAYS better with him on the court than off the court for the Wolves. It can be frustrating to watch when the shot's not falling, but he's just an elite floor general. It's why he inspires such love and such hate from fans.

If he ever actually developed a consistent jumper, I think he's a top 10 PG. That being said, he's gone through extended hot streaks before. Like several months at a time before falling off a cliff again.

If Rubio had a consistent jumper he'd be a top 3 PG - Haralabob

Well maybe top 5..as he is playing over the last two weeks.

There are very few guys on point guard who play D like Rubio and most of them are defensive specialists who have no offensive game at all, whereas Rubio has tons of it - just not for himself. As i wrote here countless times people tend to overvalue offense and disregard the value of a PG who can stop guys. All the stats presented in all threads of this board focus on scoring, percentages and so on. The reason Rubio would be a top 5 PG or better would be that D would always be there. What he did to Curry was no anomaly or fluke, he did it every time over the years. Name four other PG's who consistently slow down or stop Steph Curry, left alone 9 others.

Totally agree. Up until last year Rubio was consistently in the top 3 of DRPM among PG's season after season. He's a phenomenal defensive player for his position.

I wonder wether Thibs secretly agrees by now. But in my book hes a disappointment...he had a great team to work with, two #1 picks in Wiggins and Towns, plus LaVine, Dunn and Rubio with Bjelica off the bench and still completely failed to achieve a respectable result so he had to bring his chicago buddies in. In my book, Thibs is among the most overrated coaches in the league in a tough battle with Doc Rivers.

I personally don't agree. Thibs trusted Rubio in the last half of the year. When he got Butler, he figured Butler would do the same thing as he did in CHI. And he knew having a high usage PG in Rubio was probably not going to mesh well with Butler.

I didn't have an issue with Thibs moving Ricky. I had an issue with who he moved him for.

I didnt talk about him trading Ricky. I thought it was the best for both sides. I talked about how he failed to produce results before. All he did was stand on the sideline, scream all the time, never pulling Towns or Wiggins for blatant refusal to cover anyone. Instead created double standards by screaming at the bench guys for small mistakes. Miserable leadership in my book. Towns is totally spoiled in my opinion and the reason are bad coaches, Thibs and Smitch.

We are going to jinx Rubio for sure with all the recent praise  , but he is also ranked number five in NBA for PIE stat - Player Impact Estimate, for performance over the last six games (our win streak):

Didn’t know about Ricky’s mom. Glad to read he’s channeling that in a positive way. Sorry for your loss RR.

Hi all Utah fans.

A huge Ricky fan here. Since he started playing pro. Guess what? Yes, another Spaniard. :-D

I am glad that the wish to trade him that many of you had is gone. But even if I am always defending all things that Ricky bring to the team I feel that the comments in this thread are too euphoric. He is not Stockton or Nash (but we could become that quality). But he is neither just a "serviceable" PG or a backup PG for bad teams. Independently of the game style of the team he can be the floor general, the commander, if requested or allowed to. Just pay attention on how many times Snyder discuss or comments the tactic to follow with Ricky during a free throw time. Very few times done with Neto. I cannot judge other seasons as I was following the Wolves. :-D But for me this is an indication that he manages always to get the coach confidence to be his right arm on the floor. It was like this on Minnesota. He is not the leader, but he is the "mover". He pushes things, but needs a leader on his side. He can be the new Stockton if there is a Malone on his side. Hopefully this time a duo that would bring a ring.

BTW. I was recently three weeks in SLC, but unfortunately I could not attend any of the few home games that were played in the period. Nevertheless I liked the city and the people. Even if there is not much to offer for visitors. Maybe next time for the play offs I will go to the Arena.

I think people lose sight of the fact that your offensive impact isn't just based on you personally putting the ball in the hoop. Sure Ricky has trouble scoring consistently, but he always makes players around him better (which improves their personal offensive contributions).

His ability to run an offense, get players open (which he often does with misdirection), and deliver a pass on time and in the pocket are incredibly valuable. If his personal scoring becomes more consistent, I don't really see a fault in his game. He's also the type of PG that if he makes a TO will often negate it by getting a steal or creating a turnover by taking a charge.

He does everything at an exceptional level besides putting the ball in the hoop with his own hands.

Cross-court from the backcourt to the deep corner, thrown with perfect touch and accuracy so Ingles can catch the pass on the hop without going out of bounds. The pass is right in the shooting pocket, your closeout does nothing!

I'm actually blown away by Rubio at this point. I never had this high of expectations for him. He seems like he has REALLY turned a corner since around the time Gobert came back. Like things are just clicking for him.

People say he's just being streaky... I'm not so sure. I'm not saying he's going to score 30 per night, nor is the Jazz team built to depend on him to do so. However... it's difficult to deny the level of confidence he's playing with. It's a pleasure to watch. He looks so comfortable on the floor...fluid, no hesitation. Great vision, great handles... dude is sneaky fast getting to the rim. He's got his shots that he's confident in making, and he's making defenses respect him.

At this point... I completely forgot who our PG was last year!

I'm not 100% sure. But Ricky has yet to make the playoffs? I think this will be his year. Kid has played with a lot of heart the last month or two. Huge, key to the jazz winning streaks.

Its true he hasnt played in the postseason yet. In europe he was very much used to winning every year. Sadly most of his teammates were not playing as hard, just watch the Wolves minus Butler.

I've always had the feeling Rubio would play better in PO's games. He is that kind of player that makes plays
He may look like an idiot and talk like an idiot but don't let that fool you. He really is an idiot.

BTW technically this will also be Boogie's first playoff run. Feel somewhat bad for the guy. He really tries to become someone else i think, comparing his mental readiness to a few years ago. Hope he's coming back full strength.

How is his defense? Early in his career I watched tons of wolves games, and I thought Rubio was all defensive team material. Pesky on D, active hands pick pocket, great footwork and just amazing awareness where to be and when to help. In last 2 years his stealing numbers noticeably declined, is he still a very good defender?

And I was so high on him (Thibs), attributing Boston defense to him. . Evidently was wrong. Big three did it themselves.

On the other hand Doc doing rather good job just now, when high usage "stats stud" left.

At least we didn't sign an overpaid washed up George Hill.

Return to Utah Jazz
