You are underestimating the complexity of the game. You recognize that it is an unidimensional player. An specialist for some specific cases of a very specific usage. The only unidimensional players that are starters are big scorers. A role player with his clear limits is a good achievement. Accept it.

One thing that Exum has been doing well, sometimes at least, is pushing the pace. For years I’ve maintained that it’s just a Quin thing that we never run. That’s still partly true, but Exum has shown that the Jazz can run if the players just run.

Going forward, I think it’s key that Exum controls the pace every time he’s in the game. An Ingles-Favors PnR is our best weapon in the second unit, but we can’t become one dimensional. We can’t be content with walking the ball up the court and setting up a single PnR. Exum should be pushing the ball constantly and putting pressure on the defense. He’s always a just a blink away from getting to the hoop, the defense needs to feel that threat.

If the pace of the good teams doesn't slow down then Exum's speed and ability to get the ball upcourt is going to grow more important to the Jazz. Tonights game will be slower pace ,a pace that favors Rubio running the show but he played poorly last game against Memphis .Rubio needs to play good because Exum is getting better and it's hard to not notice.

Exum is getting better?

I thought so for a minute also. Then I watched more than one game. I barfed. He's that bad.

the problem is that he's not actually a PG but is being played as a backup PG. No vision, poor shooting, and terrible finishing at the rim. The 2nd problem is that he makes for a terrible SG; terrible shooter, frail body, so-so ball handler who only drives right, and again somehow can't finish at the rim. So what value does he have? I don't know why they re-signed him to that contract. He's basically a track athlete who happens to play basketball.

With all this said, quin isn't giving him or allen much of a leash, and he looks depressed on the bench most of the time. Still wish the best for the kid, he's still so young.

Late in the 3rd quarter and early in the 4th quarter, when Exum would normally play, Quin used a new line-up with Mitchell, Burks, O'Neale, Crowder and Favors together. This is a really interesting line-up. However, they just ran Mitchell isolation a against Hayward over and over, so there wasn't much ball movement. This is when Mitchell scored on Hayward and Favors had consecutive put-backs.

If the Jazz play Mitchell/Burks in the backcourt together, it's going to cut Exum's minutes.

mitchell/burks and mitchell/allen should happen more often as this adds dynamic playmaking/scoring from both backcourt positions compared to having exum on or even rubio to some extent given his poor shooting. i think grayson and mitchell would look awesome next to each other. watch the offense when G is in. No one helps off of him and driving lanes get wide open. he can also function as a secondary playmaker and attacks closeouts really well. he gets most of his 3 point attempts off broken plays or in transition, but he completely changes/increases the advantage the jazz have in the halfcourt when it comes to penetration and floor spacing. He just needs to keep working on defense, but he's definitely looked better on that end the last 1 or 2 games he's played.

there was also alot of burks/allen/o'neale in preseason which was a very effective lineup that quin hasn't been using.

At this point, Exum's the player we preferred over Smart or Lavine. My hopes of Dantee changing this narrative are almost faded down for good.

Dante single handedly are up 8-10 seconds of shot clock every possession. His ball pressure Mack and Conley look like...Dante.

IMO Dante is going to be better than Smart. They're not that far off as players right now and Dante is younger.

Smart is a career 36/29/76 shooter whose defensive rating is *worse* than his offensive rating. His DPM is good and he's clearly a good defender, but his offensive game is limited to wild drives, stupid shots, and boneheaded passing.

Smart is an excellent defender. He takes the hardest assignments.

Exum is an excellent defender at times, but it's not as consistent as Smart yet.
In '03-'04, Jerry Sloan coached the ESPN predicted "worst team of all time" to 42-40.

I know if a go dig into numbers and algorithms and such, I will be able to find support for an "Exun and Smart are similar" argument.
That said, I need my guy to be able to keep himself compose and on court in those for whatever reason special games you just can't lose. In such light, if I've got to chose between Smart and Exum...
