Game 55: San Antonio Spurs (23-31) @ Utah Jazz (36-18)

Post#1 » by Crunch 99 » Wed Feb 19, 2020 3:55 pm

The Spurs take on the Jazz at Vivint Arena on Friday night at 7pm. The Spurs won the first game against the Jazz a few weeks ago, 127-120. DeRozan had a season high 38 points on 19 shots attempts. DeRozan also made 16 free throws. The Jazz struggle to defend mid range shooters. They need to do better.

The Spurs were still in the hunt for the eighth seed the last time the Jazz faced them, but the Grizzlies have seized control of the race for eighth, opening up a five game lead on the Spurs and a four game lead on the Blazers. It is probably realistic to call the Spurs a lottery team at this point, though Pop is probably still coaching to win.

Well, we got overselves playoff environment. We have to fight for each game to get that 2nd seed. That's the only way to get to WCF!

Here are the expected lineups at Rotowire as of noon. Conley is still listed as OUT. He missed two games right before AS break and now this one.

Not good news on Conley! Anyone pick up on chatter with the issue? His durability is officially getting concerning.

It looks like this is part of a workload plan to hold Conley out one game out of back to back games:

Ahhh, saving him for the small ball Rox on Saturday. But still, dude hasn't played in like 2 weeks, sigh. At this point maybe they should just shut him down so he's fully rested and healed for next year

The Jazz have figured out they have a problem when Conley plays. The Conspiracy Theorist in me says Conley is perfectly capable of going tonight, but the Jazz are not in a rush to play him while they can milk his recent injuries.

Also, the Spurs shot lights out the last time we faced them. I say law of averages baby.....Jazz win tonite!

Conley has always had durability issues and is injury prone. The last time he played more than 70 games in a season was the 13-14 season. It's not really that unexpected.

Jazz don’t look like a top 4 seed tonight. Vacay is over, boys!

Crazy that there isn't a single game post in this thread. I guess that happens with such a frustrating team. I'm getting really tired of Mitchell's overrated game. He is looking more like Ben Gordon than a possible franchise player.

Disappointing result but Im not entirely disappointed with the game itself. I thought Rudy played with the swagger that you would expect from an all star which going forward could be big for us. We tried a few different plays and even though it possibly cost us the game I liked that Quin didn't baby sit the team and call a timeout when Spurs made their run, we need to become better at stopping the opposition when they get hot and calling timeouts whilst effective shouldn't be necessary all of the time. We also had a few things not go our way during their run which I put down to luck more than anything.

Not going to win many games with Donovan and Bogey shooting a combined 8-27 for 27 points especially when 8 of those points where in junk time. Donovan again didn't go the free throw line, it is a concern but at the same time he is getting a ridiculously hard whistle, Mills and Derrick White get breathe on and go the line, Donovan gets contact and gets a no call. Although in saying that he has become starter about when he drives to the hoop, sometimes he goes in just to try and get a whistle which rarely will the ref reward that and rightly so.

The refereeing as a whole was bloody awful.

I didn't watch the game but expected the Jazz to win. Still, not a surprise. Regarding Conley, while I can buy the load management on back-to-backs explanation, he's also listed on ESPN as OUT for tonight's game vs the Rockets, so maybe he's got some other injury or illness going on.

Maybe. My rotowire link in post #5 above included a link to this Thursday tweet from Tony Jones. There could be something else going on though. Rotowire has Conley listed as GTD probable starter early this Saturday morning for the Houston game.

ESPN is not very reliable when it comes to their injury report so I wouldn't be surprised if Conley plays.

The mentality of this team is so soft...how many games has been this year when the team simply doesn’t compete?

It’s crazy that this is a regular thing. As a coach, you can’t have 20 postgame press conferences a year saying the problem was your teams effort. Quin doesn’t have this team in the right place. He’s lost them.
