It's pre-season already. First look at the Jazz. Let's see if we manage to insert some of our young players (Oni, Brantley, etc.) into the rotation.

The mad genius Q with the league stunning "Triple Towers" attack. Brilliant answer to small ball

Welp, guess only Rudy and Udoka for tonight, no Gill in sight.
For the short burst that Udoka played, there's a solid chance he can be of immediate help. A C rotation of Gobert, Favors, Azubuike is really really solid. His block on Payne's floater was on point, perfect read in terms of timing. Looked a bit awkward landing though.
NWG is ready I think, but Mitchell at back up PG is too good for it not to be used. Snyder has a very good problem with depth

Hughes looks like a legit bucket getter. Silky jumper.

I liked Goss a lot when he played in the bubble. He and Oni looked the most ready out of that young group (not predicting him to be great or anything, but maybe a bit better than Neto long term?).

I only saw part of the last half, but I am happy to see from the stats that Ingles immediately reconstructed the Ingles/Favors pick n roll. I hope Conley and Clarkson take notice and learn to connect with Favors as well. Imo, Favors was often times underutilized on offense in New Orleans. When most of their players were healthy, Favs didn't get many shot attempts.
Our bench should be quite a bit better than last season. Go Jazz!

The Jazz's offense is now a machine that generates open 3pt looks. It starts with Mitchell coming off a screen, or just beating his defender without a screen. Then he breaks the paint, collapses 2 or 3 defenders, and makes an athletic pass to find an open 3pt shooter. Ball swings, and someone gets a pretty wide-open look.
It starts with Mitchell and Gobert coming down the lane together off screen/roll action on a spaced floor. Jazz have Ingles, Bogdanovic, and Conley or Clarkson waiting for the ball on the perimeter. All of them are over 40% on catch-and-shoot 3s.
It looks a lot like what Houston ran two years ago with Harden and Clint Capella. Houston had the #2 offense in the league that year behind Golden State. More than 60% of the Jazz's shots in the 1st half last night were 3pt shots, and they made around 39%.

How did Brantley look?

Surprisingly active defensively. He switched onto guards and wings and kept them in front. Jazz may be grooming him to play a Jae Crowder role down the line.

Gobert's passing looks like it might be improved, and it looks like they are trying to engage him in the offense more by throwing some entry passes and running some short rolls for kickouts. Very encouraging to see, hopefully it keeps up. Young guys looked good against Phoenix's end of bench unit.

If he can become Crowder with at least a slightly better shot then he’ll be quite the steal.
