Debt restructure

Post#1 » by E S V L » Fri Feb 5, 2021 5:31 pm

As a Memphis fan, I wonder what do you guys think about changing the protections of the 1st round pick owed to Memphis so that it is conveyed in 2021. Memphis would get the pick in the range 15-30 on the deep 2021 draft, while Utah would eliminate the risk of conveying the pick in the range of 7-14 next year.

Current protections:

top 7, #15-30 in 2020-21,
top 6 in 2022,
top 3 in 2023,
top 1 in 2024,
else 2025 second round pick, 2026 second round pick

Changed protections:

lottery protected 2021
top 6 in 2022,
top 3 in 2023,
top 1 in 2024,
else 2025 second round pick, 2026 second round pick

I don't see any upside for Memphis to do that. Odds are we probably take a step back next whether it is because we lose Conley or simply the fact that Conley, Ingles and Bogey are all a year older and may take a step back. The griz are also loaded with young players that need minutes so delaying that pick is in there best interest.

I would love that deal and throw $ or something to entice Memphis into taking that deal. It would allow Utah to use future picks in trades to improve the current team. I think the way it stands now, Utah can't move a 1st round pick until 2026.

I wouldn't do it if I were the Jazz. The Jazz could use a cost-controlled rotation player, and this draft is a rare opportunity to hit on a player in the late 1st who contributes to the current core. A player like Filip Petrusev, Scottie Lewis, or David Johnson could make a difference for the Jazz.

I'd see how this season plays out before making a move with this summer's pick.

When Memphis agreed to those pick protections, they were making a gamble thinking that Rudy wouldn't re-sign with the Jazz.
