What's the issue with Boggy?

Post#1 » by anish23 » Thu Feb 18, 2021 10:26 am

I think for us to win the championship, we need the best version of Bojan. What's the issue with him?

I know he had that surgery, has that affected his shot?

As a high school player who shot the three ball, I know it eventually comes back, but didn't it already come back for him? I think the slump might be a long term issue? Are you guys worried about him?

If he continues to shoot 2-10 etc, for lets say the 6-7 games out of the next 10, what do you guys think we should do?

His inconsistency is definitely a concern right now. Luckily there is a lot of season left to get him on track. We have to get him on the track though because that is the difference between a good team and a great team.

Ideally if we can create a 5 or 6 game lead between us and the 2 seed then I would love to rest him a few weeks if his wrist really is still bothering him. Preferably use the all star break and then rest him 2 weeks after that so it is closer to 3 weeks. I hate Brooklyn but I'm rooting for them tonight against the lakers. The lakers have a relatively tough schedule going into the all star break so I think it is possible to get that 5 or 6 game lead. We have to beat them in our matchup though. That is the must win game to make that happen because that is 2 game swing. The clippers also have a pretty tough schedule as well. If we can handle our business tomorrow then we will be up 4.5 games on them.

Maybe we should rest him when Conley gets back.

Thanks. Thats what I assumed was going on. I'm not too worried about it right now, but we do need him for the playoffs. Wonder if resting his wrist would help, or if its just going to need time more than anything.

It's been 9 or 10 months since he had the surgery. It should be completely healed at this point, or the surgery was not successful, or he might not be the same again, unfortunately.

I'd prefer he stop dribbling, more than stop shooting, despite the slump. Just sayin' ;)

I cringe when he starts backing people down, or dribbles anywhere near a second defender. It's like he doesn't realize he's not playing 1 on 1 basketball.

My armchair GM solution to Bojan's issues: cut down his minutes to about 25 per game unless he's lighting things up, and find a Niang-upgrade to sop up the extra minutes. I think the Jazz are just one decent role-player at the 4 away from having all they need to win it all.

Yes. I'm not a doctor, but this is not load bearing, like a knee or ankle which can take up to a year to heal fully and be fully functional. The surgery itself might have impacted the ligament in his wrist which should be fully healed by now and potentially affect his shot forever.

100%. It's not about him shooting or moving the ball. It's about him dribling. Teams are prepared for this and they are always looking for a steal. He made stupid decisions on his drives.

I've seen articles, like the one in D News below from May 2020, saying that operating on the scapholunate ligament is dicey, that "100% function is not guaranteed and there are concerns about lingering tightness and stiffness".
https://www.deseret.com/sports/2020/5/19/21262769/utah-jazz-nba-forward-bojan-bogdanovics-wrist-surgery-success

But I just looked at Bogey's statistics, dividing the season in to two halfs, and Bogey has been very good on average the last 14 games. If Bogey can come close to doing what he has done the last 14 games the rest of the way, I would be very happy.

First 14 games: 13.3 ppg on 11.9 FGA, 38.9%/38.7% shooting with 3.8 rebs, 1.8 ast and 1.7 tov and +1.1 plus minus per game.
Last 14 games: 17.8 ppg on 12.2 FGA, 48%/42.7% shooting with 3.9 rebs, 2.1 ast and 1.6 tovs and team leading +10.9 plus minus per game.

I suspect Bogey is dribbling in to the paint with the coaches' blessing, that they believe he can get better at it and believe it is good to attack the opposing team in numerous ways. Bogey's tovs per 36 min has improved to 1.8 this season versus 2.7 last season.* His usage is down some too, but not enough to account for his improvement in tovs per 36.

*Hopefully I didn't just jinx Bogey --- contributing to 4 tovs next game. LOL.

Go Bogey! Go Jazz!

I guarantee the coaches aren't telling Bogey to do much dribbling at all. That isn't his game and not something that he will improve on.

I've been trying to not be too reactionary with my Bogey takes but **** it I'm sick of him. Trade him and get someone who brings effort and doesn't complain every second play. Theres plenty of options out there who teams have to respect who can defend better and come up with hustle plays.

The only question is who needs him ?

I'm not too worried about Bogey. I do agree that on some night his minutes should be more limited when his role is just spotting up on 3's v creating offense - Jazz have plenty of shooters.

Question for everyone, what is Bogey worth in a trade and is he worth paying the tax over?

Quite a few players out their who may not be as good as shooters as him (or close too) but still have to respected that can defend opposition forwards better who also earn slightly less that could enable us to get below luxury tax line which will help when we eventually become repeat offenders. With the amount of shooting we have on the roster outside of our C's, Bogey's shooting isn't anywhere as required as what it was when we originally signed him.

I don't think we should trade him. He's our biggest free agent signing since Boozer, he's an amazing shooter and fits the team well. I'd like to see us just improve at the margins. We have two trade exceptions and two roster spots. Trade a second and cash each for David Nwaba and Mike Muscala, and I think they fill in some small holes.

Gobert 34/Favors 14/Muscala
O'neale 26/Bogdanovic 8/Muscala 8
Bogdanovic 20/Ingles 24/Nwaba 4
Mitchell 14/Clarkson 26/Nwaba 8
Conley 28/Mitchell 20

Match Bogdanovic entirely with Gobert when he plays power forward, match Muscala entirely with Favors (which gives us 8 minutes of pretty good size w/Gobert off the court, we'd get bullied a little less) and throw Nwaba at a team's best perimeter scorer for 12 minutes a game.
