Agreed. He was a free agent for a day? And then signed with the Bulls. I suspect Alize was waived only because Millsap and Aldridge were willing to sign with the win-now-Nets for the veteran minimums. When Johnson suddenly became available, I don't think the Jazz were in position to go after him even if they wanted him.

I wanted Johnson last season after he lit us up on points and rebs while playing on a ten day contract. We've got a small game sample for Johnson, but his regular season rebs/36 last season was 17.1 vs Paschall's 6.6 and Brantley's 5.1. Alize's playoff rebs/36 was 20.3. In Paschall and Brantley, we have two wide body, muscular guys who surprisingly struggle to grab rebounds.

Johnson's three point percentage on the Nets on just 6 attempts was awful, but he averaged a respectable 36% 3p% over his three season G-League career.

Now those stats make me feel sad. Hope Paschall pans out

And damn Morgan to Boston, huh. The semi athletic stretch fours have been transferring to the East

As you probably know, stats can be haywire when only limited minutes, usually garbage minutes, are the basis of them. Over time they could be proven accurate, or wildly misleading.

Johnson's rebounding stats per 36 are obviously out of whack due to the small sample size and limited minutes, but I think they do show at least that he's a good rebounder, regardless of what's the actual realistic rebounding numbers he'd get with a decent sample size. In other words, his rebounding ability seem to be translated well.

IIRC, statistically rebounding ability is one of the skills that translates more easily from the college game. Johnson has been an exceptional rebounder both in college and the G-League so it would only make sense for him to be a very good one in the NBA as well.

Yes, Johnson averaged 11.1 rebs/game at Missouri State over two seasons and he averaged 13.4 rebs/game in G League over three seasons. In addition, in his 18 regular season NBA games with the Nets last season, he had a 15 reb, 5 oreb, 23 pt game against Utah and a 21 reb, 4 oreb, 20 pt game against Indiana. I wouldn't be surprised if 97/98% of NBA forwards go their entire careers without a 20/20 game. It is probably reasonable to conclude that Johnson is already an above average rebounder at his position, and that he has some offensive potential as well.

I am still hopeful our development coaches turns Paschall and/or Brantley in to good all around contributors off the bench this season though.

I am cautiously optimistic that Whiteside will have a good season. He's not too old and he has talent. I know he has negatives: he has been an inconsistent player who sometimes lacks focus and commitment; he's a player who sometimes chases blocks at the expense of good overall defense, but he's got someone to emulate here --- Gobert. He signed here knowing his job is to come in and to try to continue to protect the rim and paint when Gobert goes out of the game. I am hopeful that he can be Gobert-light, and get us away from the situation we had last season where it seemed like other teams immediately started attacking the rim when Gobert went out of the game.

He has some offensive talent too, but I am worried that our bench may underutulize both Whiteside's and Gaye's offensive talent while Clarkson dominates the ball. It's great that Clarkson won games for us when he was hot, but his overall efg% and ts% sucked post All Star game and playoffs. I'd like to see the shot attempts from the bench spread out a little more, with Clarkson looking to pass the ball more, but I am not sure we will get it.

Whiteside is a decent passer on the low block and to be fair, he somehow managed to refrain from his block chasing tendencies and play the angles more.

I agree also with the bench production. Clarkson, Gay, and Paschall are all capable scorers, but you can't have them playing HORSE. As for JC's playmaking, I'd like for him to revert to his LA rookie days when he was demolishing defenses with his PnR. He made Tarik Black and Ed Davis Amare-lite with those pocket passes. And excited to have Gay who can operate in the midrange aside from Bojan

Jazz hoping to catch some team building chemistry early on by moving mini camp to Vegas. Good things happened in the bubble, maybe this will have the same effect to start the season with this new group of free agents.

To play 10-15 minutes a game in the regular season and about 0 in the post-season.

I don't see him getting much time with the Jazz this year. It is hard for a rookie to get minutes on a veteran team. Conley, Mitchell & Clarkson will eat up most of the time at the 1/2. Ingles will eat up time at 2/3. I also think the Jazz liked what they saw from Forrest last year. IMO, unless Conley or Clarkson gets traded, he is going to be trying to get the few minutes Forrest got last year.

Gobert, O'Neal, Bogey, Mitchell, Conley, Ingles, Clarkson, Gay and Whiteside are all likely to get regular rotatation minutes. That is already nine guys, but I hope Snyder tries harder this season to give guys like Paschall, Butler, Forrest, Oni and Doke some opportunities to play with regular rotation guys, even if it may mean we risk losing a regular season game from time to time. We need to develop some of those young guys, and with the way injuries go, we might need help from one or two of them sometime in the playoffs.

Resting Conley on all back to backs again and veteran Ingles on some back to backs is probably a good idea. Maybe resting veteran Rudy Gay a couple of times too is good depending on how many minutes he is playing. Even Gobert, MItchell, Bogey, Royce and Clarkson, who all work their butts off, might benefit from a game or two off picked at strategic times when we still would have a decent chance to win the game.
