Lock mentions this on his podcast referring to people like Jason Collins etc who have potential but are possibly in the wrong environment. I thought we should’ve gone after Thybulle personally but are there any that you think are worth a roll of the dice?

This is a great question because I think this is exactly how we’ll use our salary space next season.

I think in general we’ll be looking for people that have things effecting their value but have displayed the raw talent. Probably over paid, oft injured or viewed as aging out.

I imagine that we’ll also be looking for situations where these projects will come with picks attached as well.

A few names come to mind:

Ben Simmons (pretty obvious imo)
Duncan Robinson
Lonzo Ball
MPJ

The $60,000,000 doesnt mean that much in terms of signing free agents as we know they don't want to play in Utah. So this is potentially the only way

I think there's such a thing as a reclamation signing as well.

Where you sign someone to a team-friendly deal that might be longer than others are willing to do, in an attempt to rehab that player's value over time.


I could see players like Dangelo Russell, Josh Richardson, and Dario Saric fitting into that category and getting a contract offer thrown their way.

Don't mean to post back to back but I was just thinking that I'd look for players in a few different groups:
- Overpaid but productive (think Joe Harris)
- Players playing without a good/natural PG (think Julius Randle last year)
- Players playing third/fourth fiddle on a good team (think Mikal Bridges)
- Players playing outside of their natural position (Lauri to some extent)
- Players playing with bad spacing (anyone in Chicago)

I'm enjoying what we've done so far, THT finally seems to be in shape and is improving, Lauri was a revelation, etc.

John (not Jason) Collins makes sense, I'm out on Simmons, though. Aaron Nesmith might have some potential.

I would much rather going after players who make small and medium sized salaries instead of huge salaries like Simmons and Collins because it is much easier to outperform their contract. If Collins or Simmons play well, they only justify their contracts.

I agree! I think the only way you take on one of those contracts is with heavy incentive.

Not a reclamation project by any means, but if the Nets decide to blow it up completely and rebuild this summer, I would be willing to pay several draft picks for Mikal Bridges and absorb him into our cap space.

I'd kind of like to see if we can peel Fultz or Suggs from Orlando. Likely they keep both and instead try to move Anthony, who I'm just not interested in.

If they get the second pick I think the odds of one of them coming loose increases.

Yeah, I'd like to roll the dice on Suggs if possible. Don't know how much he'd cost but I find him intriguing.

I'd assume quite a bit. I'd probably do two or three firsts for him, but our least valuable ones. Fultz is the guy that might be more attainable, but it depends on how the FO feels about Anthony and where they end up drafting.

You know it's probably best to steer clear of head cases... because sometimes the Nick Andersons just cant be fixed. But Ben actually has all the skills that fred hoiberg sold kevin mchale on with royce white.

I can play head games too. I'd run Ben Simmons through shooting drills in practice on a rim with a wider diameter before games.

Thought I would reply to Zero here since Dunn qualifies as a reclamation project. With us needing to have a minimum 14 players, Dunn has a great opportunity to be more than one and dunn, and to actually earn a spot on the roster. If Sexton is still out with hammy, Dunn will see time on the floor during the ten day, but I think THT might start.

I hope Dunn has really learned to hit the three ball, but we've still got a relatively small sample this season in G League, where he is 31 3PM on 75 3PA. And it is harder to hit threes in the NBA imo. Dunn has played 33 G-League games this season, but only started 11 of them. Hopefully he was progressing and started the last 11 games. He's got an excellent ORtg, DRtg, PER and TS% in G-League this season, but it is G-League, not NBA. Regardless, I am cautiously optimistic for chances of Dunn sticking on the Jazz for the remainder of the season.

Good call on him being a reclamation project. He's got NBA skills. If his shot is respectable, he goes from Trent Forrest 2.0 to becoming a legit NBA rotation player. I haven't heard anything about Sexton's injury situation, but with him not missing the Skills Contest during the weekend, it leads me to think his injury is pretty minor. Even if Sexton is ok, I still hope coach gives the two 10 day guys a real look.
