Offseason question #6: second draft

Post#1 » by babyjax13 » Sun May 4, 2025 12:07 am

Continuing offseason questions (and I am including all the other interesting threads in the 'library' below), there are some interesting young free agents teams might not want to retain, or might not be able to retain. I like the term "second draft" players, i.e., young guys that could blossom with a different role/more opportunity (a la Lauri). Utah has some ability to generate cap space (lots of ung. contracts) or use the MLE.

In terms of mechanics, if we don't guarantee Juzang, Svi, Martin Jr., and Springer we sit at: $135,794,232. We then have capholds for our draft picks of $17,338,440. That is $153,132,672, which is below the cap of $154,647,000, but just barely. We could make a few trades that increase our cap space, or just use the full MLE (not a ton of teams will have this). Let's just say all the players below are ones we can acquire whether it be through the MLE, through reasonable trades that create space, or through S+T. Which players are your preference? Choose up to 3.

Hard to say. After some of his performances this season, it may be that Grimes might get a bigger than expected contract.

The Kuminga situation is iffy because it looks like the Warriors are trying to suppress his value so they could re-sign him at a cheaper price, but I'd hate to be the team that rolls the dice on him and gives him a big contract.

Cam Thomas is also a relatively known commodity at this point. He's probably best off the bench for instant scoring and right now it looks like this role might be reserved for George.

The rest of the list doesn't do much for me, but I've also not followed them that closely. I think the Jazz need to worry about finding their core first, and then work on the roster around them. Until they have their core pieces in place, what they do on the margins is largely irrelevant.

The real decision the Jazz FO is making is between Continuity, Cap Flexibility, and Cash Considerations.

Grimes would make some sense. If you want to pick up Vukcevic as a backup 5, I don't really mind.

None of these are must-haves.

Don't know how realistic it is but I'd look at some of the Rockets' young players like Eason, Smith Jr., Whitmore, and Sheppard.
