What can you guys tell me about CJ Miles' play this year, his contract status, and the likelihood that the Jazz sign him long-term?

In limited minutes, this kid has shown a fairly large jump in his fg%. That said, it is a small sample size.

Does this kid still have a future? Is he still developing, or has he been a huge disappointment?

CJ made a huge jump in his game this year from the previous two years. He signed a one year deal this year, and I doubt the Jazz sign him long term.

He is known as a our best "practice" shooter, but it hasn't really translated to real games. He is a very likeable and very upbeat kid, but likes to get a little too showy for the coaches taste.

Everyone was a bit surprised that the Jazz signed him this year because he held out from the summer league teams.

A lot of people didnt think he had a good chance of signing this year, and next year I think it is even more unlikely. Unless it looks like almond can not produce at all than I don't think he makes it back next year.

Our owner miller is in love with the kid, and miller wanting him to stay is his best chance at getting another contract here I think.

He will find a team there is not doubt about that.

Can he play any defense? Given his minimal court time, I would assume not, but obviously I don't know.

Streaky defender. I've seen him play terrific defense on occasion, and absolutely horrible defense on occasion. He is a hard worker though, he's a great team player, and he's continuing to improve. I'll admit, this past offseason, I didn't understand the fuss over re-signing CJ and I thought he was just some scrub. But he's come back every October/November better than he was the previous season in terms of body/skills/confidence.

He has to mature as a player and not get so down on himself when his shot isn't falling. He's let that affect his overall play on numerous occasions and Sloan has mentioned it. He's young though. 20 years old, and each season he's continued to get better. He's just in a tight spot in a crowded Jazz rotation. I think what he has shown this year though, is that he is an NBA player and he does belong in this league. If not a gig with the Jazz, he'll get one elsewhere.

Miles was beginning to get very significant minutes and was solidifying that with good play and great shooting, both on penetration and behind the arch.

His minutes were cut when he was just beginning to shine, becuase our team acquired Korver, who has more experience. Unfortunately Miles proabably won't have much of a shot with Utah unless Harpring dies, then he'll probably take over the back up 3 position.

I think he has a bright future in the league, and Larry Miller is justified in the comments he's made about him.

The guy is an NBA player and has a lot of upside.
Still too raw to crack the rotation on a big team (especially if crowded with swingmen).

Bottom up i'd like to retain him, but beside trades at the 2-3 spot, he won't find a lot of PT here.

It's pretty tough for him, considering we have much depth between the SF and SG positions, so he has to really fight for minutes. He also doesn't have the college experience, nor a mentor at the SG from his rookie season. So it's taken him some time to adjust, but I think most Jazz fans are happy with what he provides in the little time he plays now. I think in a few years he can be a solid starter.

He can't be traded without his permission this year, and is a restricted free agent this summer. Depending on the draft I think the Jazz will bring him back unless some team gives him a crazy contract.

Are you saying he is more of a 3 than a 2?

How is his ball handling?

CJ Miles is probably the best SG/SF among 20 years old players.

His ballhandling and passing abilities|potential are great.

I don't see the skepticism on CJ around here, and I never really have.

I like the kid a lot, and I did during the summer as well. I always expected him back with the Jazz, after all the BS cleared up, which turned out to be exactly the case.....I just haven't ever seen the doubt that everyone seems to have of him

The guy is a really, really young player. I still think he should have gone to Texas and played there for two seasons, in which case he would barely be coming into the league this year. Every person has their own internal clock that dictates how/when they develop. There are a few freaks like LeBron, D12 and a few others that can come in and be very good right away, but the VAST majority of players can't even compete until they are 21 or 22.

CJ is almost 21, and--surprise, surprise--he is just starting to round into shape as a real NBA player.

The Jazz have given every indication that he has a future here, and I see no substantial reason why he wouldn't. Things change so much from year to year, you never know what might or could happen. Harpring is clearly nearing the end of his run. He has two years on his contract after this one, but might only have one more year of play. AK's situation is up in the air, and he could easily find himself elsewhere within a year or two. That is two spots in the rotation that are on shaky ground, both of which CJ could potentially fill. I see him getting a 2 or 3 year deal for about 2.5m per season at the end of the year, and eventually becoming a quality role player off the bench here.

I could see him becoming either the six man or starting at one of the wing positions opposite Brewer. But as JF1971 mentioned, the one thing really holding him back is his body. I think his game has come around and matured (he still has lots of room to grow and more work to do) but he needs to add some muscle and weight to that frame.

Yeah, I agree. But it has already improved quite a bit, and he has gone from "completely and utterly overmatched" to "too skinny" in a couple of years. That will definitely come with time. Right now, though, its obvious the kid has the skills and (finally) the drive to make it in the NBA.

I agree with what's been said, and would add that he is control of how far he goes. He has the natural talent to be a very good role player, but needs to work on his all around game. He seems to be well liked by most fans and his teammates.

the true problem is: will the Jazz add 2-3 millions to the cap? Will they keep so many swingmen? Will CJ accept limited PT?

anyway, we'll have the summer for that.

miles may have a future but its not here. I love our roster right now and we have a deep bench..*without* miles. Very likely another stevenson for us. - my .02
