Dumb question, but does anyone know why Boozer always has to take the ball from the referee in between free throws?

That is a dumb question. Its just a little ritual, just like players who are shooting the ft have.

I kinda do it too. It is a ritual indeed in order to get ready for the rebound and to come in strong for it.
