Larry Miller: Stockton could be next head Coach

"It's 3:22 when Miller says Sloan wants to coach for at least another season, maybe more. But when he does call it quits, longtime Jazz assistant Phil Johnson will get first crack at the job. That's written in stone.
If Johnson takes a pass, Miller is likely to make a run at John Stockton. They've discussed the job in the past, but Stockton's interest in the position -- or, more correctly, in coaching in the NBA -- has cooled. For now."

Yeah,...read this a little while ago.
Have to question LHM dropping a bomb like that so casually, but the guy wouldn't dare make that **** up, would he?
Anyhow, my biggest long term concern is our next coach. We have the makings of a roster that could be an annual title contender, but without a strong leader to man the helm, we could end up like just another Sac-town or Portland team. Very good, but not quite good enough.
Stockton would seem to be perfect for the job....but you never really know how a guy will transition from being a great player to being a coach. Very few have done it with any success, but a self-made player like Stockton might be an exception. With his intelligence, work ethic, and mental toughness, he seems to be an ideal candidate, though.

Hmmm, good but, not good enough. Somehow that reminds me of the Stockton/Malone era.

We would DIE! I love Stockton to death and everything, but I could NOT see Johnny coaching at the NBA level. On the other hand, I could see Hornacek someday, but not Stockton.

WOuldnt it just be awesome to see the coaches for the utah jazz Stockton, Malone, Hornacek?? I would love to see that on a bench. Malone probably wouldnt consider coaching but it would still be cool.

I believe that he is a trainer at Louisiana Tech now.

of course it's hard to visualize stockton coaching, he's seemed like a pretty introverted guy. But you really can't judge i guess. I don't know what to think. Johnson would be a great head coach, i'm sure of that...but the dude's getting old...who knows.

Malone's title at Louisiana Tech is "director of basketball promotion and assistant strength and conditioning coach".
As for head coach, I'd prefer to see someone with at least some coaching experience get the job. If not Johnson, someone like Tyrone Corbin would be a natural fit. He has drawn rave reviews as an assistant, has coached some in the RMR, and many believe is being groomed for a head coaching job somewhere in the NBA eventually.

I bet Stockton would have a personality pretty similar to Sloan as a coach. I like the idea, but if it were his rookie start as a coach, that could be a problem.
College Coaching?

I could see
Stockton wanting to coach at a collegiate level but I can't picture him wanting to deal with the egos or the spotlight of the NBA.

I see Stock taking over for Few in a few

.
I still want Ty. He seems to have the respect for players and intestinal fortitude to lay down the line.

I just want someone who is going to keep running this system.

LHM seems pretty intent on keeping a UTJ system.
My hierarchy seems to be:
1:Phil Johnson
2: John Stockton
3: Ty Corbin
4: Jeff Hornacek
5: Scott Layden
6: Matt Harpring
7: Delaney Rudd (or Blue Edwards)

I wonder how much fun Stock would have coaching. It seems like something that might get old pretty quick for him to me, for some reason.
Jeff would be fantastic, and by all accounts, Ty Corbin is coming along very nicely. Either of them would be most welcome.

I agree with most of your doubts.
Stockton has been a great player, but that doesn't automatically (or immediately) translate into being a great coach. At least, I'd like him to be an assistant to Sloan or Phil Johnson for a while before taking on such a demanding job.
Corbin would also be my favorite option right now.
