The Nuggets just save a bunch of money on their health insurance.

Damn. Would it be worth it to have made a similar move to get Camby to make an all out run for the Championship this season, but give ourselves catastrophic financial problems next summer?

Nice, now we only have to worry about Portland. (we don't need to worry about them though)

I'm confused here.... how this deal works under NBA rules?

It would be impossible. The Clippers were only able to do it because they are under the cap by enough.

I would be open to trading Memo straight up for Camby...and it would work under the salary cap, I believe.
If you subsribe to the theory that we must let one of the Memo/Boozer/AK trio go after next season, it would basically be getting something for Memo in the short term as well as pairing Boozer with a major shot blocking presence and, presumably, solving our interior defensive woes.
I don't think the Clip want to go into next season with a Camby/Kaman frontcourt duo. Kaman is a true center, and likes to operate close to the hoop. Camby is the same. However, Memo would pair perfectly with Kaman as an inside, outside duo.
One thing is for sure, though. With all the hate that Camby has recieved as being "overrated" or a stat stuffing whore who is really a liability, we will finally see the truth. If Denver's D completely falls of the face of the earth next year, we will know why.

Bad move by the Clippers, in my opinion. They'd have been much better off holding on to the cap space until next summer if they weren't able to get a big FA this summer.

It was already in outer space to begin with.

I wonder if that makes Kaman tradeable.

I think they'd be idiots to trade Kaman to open things up for the older and brittler Camby.

Trading Memo for Camby would still cost the Nuggets 40 million. Th only reason they do this is to get UNDER the tax.

I think E was talking about the Clippers trading Camby for Memo, though I hate that idea and -- as far as I understand the rules on trades -- it wouldn't be able to happen for several months.

The Clippers can trade him when ever (remember Rasheed's 1 game as a Hawk?) but I would not do that for at all. He is too old and fragile.

You're right. I think I confused that with the waiting period on trading FAs after they're signed.

Camby's blocks are overated, they're from the weak side like AK's

I believe they're actually thinking about the 2010 offseason. In 2009/2010 Mobley, Thomas and Camby will be expiring (about 24 million in expiring contracts) and there will be a lot of big names on the market.
Also the Clippers had no one to start at PF. Camby is no Brand, but he's far from a scrub. Good luck trying to rebound or get a shot off on the inside against the Clips.

That's a fair point about the cap space they'll have in 2010. I guess I'm just not optimistic on their behalf that they'll have any chance of luring any of the big names who will be available. I thought they'd have a better shot at a Josh Smith or some of the middle-tier FAs next summer.

Completely agree, man. They had some trouble attracting middle-tier free agents this summer and it will probably be more difficult to attract the big names in 2010. Although they will have Davis and Kaman under contract, Thornton, who looks like he's gonna be pretty good , they play in LA, which seems to be one of the favorites destinations for free agents and they'll be able to throw the max at anyone. They'll probably at least try it.

I dislike Denver, but I think this was a good trade. Camby is an excellent defender when HEALTHY. However, they will quite a bit of cap flexibility next summer to try and sign a big name. I'd imagine that the FO looked at the team and decided that they would never make it out of the 1st round as put together. Still, this year isn't going to be fun for Denver. It really doesn't matter, I would have considered portland to be our biggest opponent this year over denver W/camby.
