I say we let Fesenko, Collins, and Almond walk. Resign Price if we have extra change, if not draft a PG in the 2nd round. These are pretty obvious decisions IMO.

Boozer is a tough one, but I think we're going to have to let him walk, because Millsap can play pretty damn good, and Kirilenko can play backup minutes. You just can't have 30 million PFs, which is what we'd have if we resign both Boozer and Millsap

I really don't even care about the 2009 free agents, except for maybe Big Z, unless we could get him very cheap, but I doubt that happens.

Anyways, I think one way or another we will be well over the cap, but do we have to pay luxury taxes since we are resigning our own guys?

Basically resigning the guys in bold leaves us:

Okur/Koufos/(draft pick)
Millsap/Kirilenko
Miles/Harpring/(draft pick)
Brewer/Korver
Williams/Knight/Price

That's 13 players, we could get 2 more guys, I'd prefer vets or cheap young players with bright futures, but that's hard to come by.

Also if the Knicks don't go top 8 in the NBA by next year, we can get another good player. I think we they'll be a lottery team behind:

Boston
Detroit
Cleveland
Philadelphia
Toronto
Orlando
Atlanta
(Insert an 8th team)

They'll probably have a top 8 chance for the #1 pick, either way around the middle of the draft.

I don't think that we get the NY pick until the summer after next, not 2009 but 2010. Am I mistaken?

No I made a mistake, I was going to say 2010, but for some reason I was talking about 2009 when it came to the pick, I just fixed my post now.

We can't let Boozer walk. Millsap is good but he is not good enough to fill in as a starting pf in place of an all-star. You don't let an all-star western conference pf walk away for nothing at all. You don't let your second/third best assest go to a competitor for free, that is bad business.

+1. Boozer is one of the two main cogs in our offense. Millsap is a nice back up, but he isn't consistent enough to be a replacement for boozer. This question will be easier to answer in a few months, but its obvious that Okur, Boozer or AK is going to have to go.

We've got our bases covered for the most part. We have 3 project centers if Okur leaves, we have a solid PF in Millsap and AK if Boozer leaves, and we resigned Miles if AK leaves. Our front office knows what it's doing, they're doing their job. Let's do our job and sit back and watch what could be the greatest Jazz team ever assembled.

If we win it all (or get uckin' close), I woulnd't be surprised to see all the rotation guys back and us in the Luxury tax. Who does/doesn't get resigned depends enormously on how far we get this year

It's still way too early to tell. I'd like to see Knight, Korver and Sap back. I wouldn't mind if Almond, Fesenko and Collins left. Re-sign Price if possible. Actually I pretty much agree with everything Ming said, except for the part that we should let Boozer walk. We should either re-sign him (if LHM is willing to pay the luxury tax) or try to sign-and-trade him to a team that's under the cap, like the Pistons and get something valuable in return without having to take salary back.

The thing is are we going to let Millsap go, when we could probably retain him under 10 million a year? Boozer on the other hand will make 16.5 million in his first year of his contract if he gets a max deal, which he'll probably demand or walk. We wont be able to have the two for the long run, unless Memo walks, and that would be a far worse scenario by leaving a huge void at center.

Lets look at what the numbers would look like under similar circumstances 2008-09:

Carlos Boozer: $16,509,500 *Assuming he'll demand a max contract
Andrei Kirilenko: $16,452,000
Deron Williams: $13,758,000
Mehmet Okur : $9,500,000 *Just for simplicity sake lets use his Early Termination Option
Paul Millsap: $8,254,750 *Just a guesstimate of mine
Matt Harpring: $6,500,000
Kyle Korver: $5,263,636 *See Okur
C.J. Miles: $3,700,000
Ronnie Brewer: $2,717,161
Brevin Knight: $2,000,000 *Using his 2008-09 number, hard to gauge how much he'll get in 2009-10
Kosta Koufos: $1,214,040
Ronnie Price: $1,188,000 * See Knight
Two draft picks: +/- $1,500,000

Total: $88,557,087.00

This is using the generous assumptions that Knight and Price actually sign for only what they're currently getting, that we get a fair deal for Millsap, Okur doesn't opt out for a better deal, while he's likely to do, with us or elsewhere. The reality is, this team would probably cost us more in the $95-100M range. Lets not forget that Brewer is till on his rookie contract, in a few years his salary will go up exponentially, though fortunately Harpring's contract will be off our hands by then.

Believe me, after Williams, I recognize that he's our most valuable player, or atleast he has been for the last two year, it looks as he might be again this year. It's just a case of too many good players on one team, and Kirilenko is hard to trade (for cap relief), and I don't like that option since in 2010 we could probably sign him for about half the price and retain one of our most valuable players. As much as I want him to stay, amongst our best players, he's our most expendable because of his backup.

i rather get something in return for boozer right now then let him go at teh end of the season. that is only if jazz's plan is to let him go.

I don't exactly like the prospect of loosing Boozer for nothing, but who do we get back in return, and who would it cost us? Are the Jazz willing to go atleast $30 million over the cap?

This is why Utah was stupid to pass up a scoring PF like Darrell Arthur for Kosta Koufos IMO. Koufos is a Memo clone at this point in his career (meaning that he has same skill level as Memo did @ that age) and probably is better. If we can develop Koufos into our starting C by then, we can let Memo walk since we would have a replacement.

too lazy to check numbers but something involving players like okafor, dalembert or hamilton/kwame if boozer doesnt mind resigning with those teams and vice versa. those are cheaper options than signing boozer to max deal but if its still too expensive for ownership i would rather deal him for expirings, decent roleplayer+ pick then let him go.

i dont know what part of Darell Arthur s play so far screams "scoring PF".

Memo came to the league with pro-experience in his early to mid 20s. Kosta is still a teenager (as you can clearly see in his completion).

I think if we go to the finals you bring back all teh important pieces and accept some lux tax payments.

If we're that good, we can probably generate the extra cash in merchandising. This town goes nuts for a finals team.

Thinking about it, it could be a great idea to trade Boozer to a team with lots of cap room as mentioned earlier, for basically draft picks, preferably lottery picks. Imagine having a great pick in 2009 and 2010? We could have 2 studs for like 7-8 million combined.

If the team wouldn't mind going into the luxury tax, I'm all for it.

What do you guys think about Biedrins? Would you guys consider anything to do with Boozer for Biedrins and change? Biedrins is getting 9 million a year through 2012, and he's been averaging 18.2ppg 13.8rpg and 2bpg! I do doubt that the Warriors would let him go though.

I'm very surprised that you all see Memo, AK and Sap filling Boozer's role on the offense.
I think if Boozer walk then the Jazz will fight for 8th spot in WC in best scenario.
Did you see Memo playing picknroll with Knight in that Portland game? Don't you realize that Sap scored on hustle plays and two wild moves (spin and fadeaway) in Clippers game? Did you see AK making jumper from post?

I cannot belive your ideas. Did you see that last minute spin layup bucket Boozer made in Portland game? That was absolute beauty, a product of unique footwork and shooting touch. That's something what can carry us. I have no idea why Jazz fans come up with such a non-sense evaluations while all other teams fans see it as it is. For some reason Boozer and Harpring get bad spanking while Okur and Kirilenko are inevitable.

This is Boozer and Williams team. Sooner or later the front office had to step out of their AK/Memo/Booz project and it will be next summer when they'll must decide.
My projection is clear, start with Boozer and Williams and complement them with fits. First we need athletic tall center to cover the basket. Bye Memo. Then we need to pay Boozer max and quality players what they are worth while staying under luxury tax. Bye AK.

How can we do it? I would pack Memo and NY pick for Kaman, and Kirilenko for expiring Szczerbiak.
Then re-sign Millsap for 3-man PF/C rotation of Boozer, Kaman and Millsap.

I don't think that Memo and Knight have a very good chemistry going on as of now.

You would be dumb to trade both Okur and Ak, especially before we even resign Boozer. That NY pick is looking sweeter and sweeter. There is no way that they make the playoff's this year and I will go out on a limb and say next year as well.

Why would we want to trade Ak for Szcerbiak? That doesn't even work does it? Wouldn't we have to take back more money?

Why would the Cavs want Ak and his contract when they already have Wallace on a huge one and are going to try and sign Lebron to a huge one as well?

NY pick is question and takes some time, Kaman is young and top level already.
Wallace contract is until 09/10.
