Posted: 10:29 AM- PHILADELPHIA - A little more than three weeks after he sprained his ankle in an Oct. 18 preseason game, Deron Williams is expected to make his return for the Jazz in Tuesday night's game against Philadelphia.
Williams told Jazz coach Jerry Sloan that he intended to play, although Williams later told reporters he would be a game-time decision. Williams averaged 37.3 minutes for the Jazz last season, but Sloan said he would be used "sparingly" against the 76ers.
"I'm probably not going to play 40 minutes tonight. I don't think my wind or my ankle" will allow it, Williams said at the pregame shootaround. "The problem with playing games is that, at the same time, it's not good to sit out because then the ankle gets stiff.
"I don't know what coach has in store. If I play, we'll find out."
Sloan said he also would give 19-year-old rookie center Kosta Koufos his first NBA start with Mehmet Okur having traveled to Turkey to attend to a family illness. Koufos has played in only two of the Jazz's six games so far, for a total of seven minutes.
"If nothing else, he deserves a chance because he's worked hard every single day," Sloan said. "There hasn't been a day that he hasn't worked hard in practice. Whatever drills we have him do, he gives you full effort on every one of them.
"Let him have a chanceto play. We're shorthanded. He's probably as capable as anybody we could put out there right now."
The Jazz will have only 11 players in uniform, including Williams.
Okur has taken leave, Jarron Collins is still recovering from a right elbow injury and Kyrylo Fesenko had to fly to Toronto to resolve a visa issue.
The Jazz were insistent that Koufos keep his visa appointment, even though his representatives believe the opportunity for the second-year center to play in Okur's absence was of even greater importance.
Williams, meanwhile, will have missed six games with the second-degree ankle sprain, which he suffered when he landed on the foot of Chicago guard Derrick Rose while landing on a three-point attempt.
Williams said he was uncertain how he would handle the Jazz's stretch of four games in five nights to finish this trip - "That I don't know. We've got to see how it feels after the game" - and acknowledge there was "a little bit" more urgency to return with Okur out.

Thank God.

I don't want him coming back before he's ready, but this was going to get ugly without him, even if he's not 100%.

And on another note, huge praise from Sloan for Koufos in this article. I'm glad to hear the kid's working his ass off, and I hope this start goes well for him.

A few minutes shouldn't hurt. Wouldn't be suprised if DW wound up playing 30 minutes knowing him, if it's close. NOW I'M EXCITED ABOUT GOING TO THIS GAME!!!!!!! I'm off to the ill-a-delph shortly!

This makes me happy. Now I think the Jazz have a good shot at winning instead of what I was expecting to be a massacre. This is a good thing but I will doubt he plays again tomorrow. He's probably not doing the back-to-back's. this week, one of each.

I won't believe it until I see it. We certainly need him for this game though. We've reached our peak of what we can do without him, and it's not good enough. I really hope this is true...

GO JAZZ!

I am psyched to finally get to see DW this season. At the same time, I would rather he not play too much, this is the 7th game of the season. The Jazz aren't falling apart, so I hope DW isn't rushing.

Happy to have him back. I hope he's healthy enough to actually play and isn't just coming back to come back.

Also excited to see Koufos tonight.

YES!!!!!!!!!!

I hope he is ready though. Maybe he should have sat this one out and instead given us a boost tomorrow night vs. the Wizards.

The backup situation will be interesting to watch.

YESSS!!!!!! I am so excited.

I hate this. I have Deron on the fantasy squad, and I'm really torn as to whether I should play him tonight. On one hand, I don't think he'll play huge minutes, and might not put up huge numbers, on the other, he's my best player and I'm hurting for PG numbers (Parker out kills me).

I think I might play him. What the hell.

I hope him not to damage his ankle...

Probably this mean no minutes for Price.

I'm hoping to have all the guys. Of course Harpring and Collins are not our favorites players, but Matt can contribute and Collins... Well he is at least a big body.

Hope Deron can play pain-free. If not, I prefer he sit until he's sure its good to go.

I am excited to see him play though. I hope AK has a huge game and plays some at 4, with Boozer at 5.

We win this game Deron or no Deron. I don't know wtf you guys are talking about, with all the negativity. We have been very solid for a team without its best player and offensive centerpiece. If Deron is back at anything close to 100%, we have an excellent shot at winning out.

Deron played a solid game coming back from the injury. You could tell that he lacked explosiveness, and lateral quickness. I think that's why he was 1-8 shooting he couldn't really attack the basket.

It will be interesting to see how his ankle responds tonight, I guarantee that thing was sore this morning after playing 31 minutes. I think he'll be dealing with a little more pain that he did vs. Philly.

I was holding my breath every time he jumped, but GDamn it was good to see you back DWill.
