Boozer officially says he will opt out

We all knew he was going to, but usually he has been saying we will see what will happen. Read the bold statements.

PER ESPNs Chris Sheridan:
It is time to stop guessing whether Carlos Boozer will opt out of the final season of his contract with the Utah Jazz.

For the first time, Boozer said unequivocally Wednesday night that he will indeed opt out of his contract at the end of the season, foregoing a guaranteed $12.66 million to become an unrestricted free agent.

"I'm opting out. No matter what, I'm going to get a raise regardless,"
Boozer told ESPN.com. "I am going to opt out, I don't see why I wouldn't, I think it's a very good business decision for me and my family, but I'd also like to see what happens with the Jazz and stay here."

Boozer's statement can only come as welcome news to teammate Paul Millsap, who posted his 13th consecutive double-double in place of Boozer on Wednesday night as Utah came back from an early 22-point deficit to defeat the New Jersey Nets 103-92.

Millsap was the catalyst in a huge fourth-quarter surge for the Jazz as they outscored the Nets 40-23 in the period, Millsap contributing half of his 18 points and half of his 12 rebounds over the final 12 minutes.

With Boozer sidelined the past 15 games by a knee injury (he sounded as though he had a setback Wednesday, experiencing pain after a workout, and planned to have an MRI Thursday) Millsap has unquestionably established himself as the NBA player providing the most bang for the buck.

In a locker room where Andrei Kirilenko is making $15.1 million, Boozer $11.6, Mehmet Okur $8.5 million and Deron Williams $5.07 million -- with a max extension kicking in next season -- Millsap is the lowest-paid player on the team with a salary of $797,581, a result of his signing a three-year deal when he was a rookie, with the third year at the team's option.

Millsap will be a restricted free agent at the end of the season, with Utah holding the rights to match any offer. But a big question mark is whether there will be any money to pay Millsap and still keep the Jazz beneath the luxury-tax threshold, which owner Larry Miller has vowed publicly he will never exceed.

Jazz general manager Kevin O'Connor told ESPN.com that Miller hasn't been quite so absolute regarding the luxury tax in internal conversations, but the issue could become moot if the Jazz allow Boozer to leave as a free agent, which would allow them to pay Millsap something resembling his fair market value.

Possibly complicating matters to a certain degree is the fact that Millsap reiterated his commitment to being represented by his uncle, Brendrick Simmons, who received a briefing from players' union officials Wednesday on the different scenarios Millsap may face this summer.

Paramount among the concerns of Millsap's camp is whether any team with significant cap space will be willing to tender an offer sheet to Millsap, with the expectation around the league being that Utah will match anything that is not egregiously unreasonable -- especially if the Jazz are far enough under the tax threshold to pay Millsap his fair market value.

Some would argue that Millsap is a $5-6 million player, while others would argue that any player brawnish and brutish enough to accumulate such an impressive streak of double-figure statistical totals is probably worth closer to $10 million annually than $5 million.

Utah will have even more flexibility with Millsap and others if Okur exercises an early termination contract and walks away from the final season of his contract, forsaking $9 million, although Okur and his agent both told ESPN.com that they will wait until the end of the season to assess the NBA landscape and see how many teams have significant cap space to make a play for a player of Okur's caliber. Currently, Atlanta, Memphis, Portland, Miami, Detroit and Oklahoma City are among the teams positioned to have the most cap flexibility.

Jazz coach Jerry Sloan has been uncharacteristically effusive in his praise for Millsap during Boozer's absence, and O'Connor told ESPN.com on Wednesday: "We intend to keep Paul Millsap. I don't know how much more succinct I can be."

Upon hearing that remark, Millsap replied: "Bit of a relief, knowing your team wants you. I would love to be here, great system, playing with one of the best point guards in the league, it can't get no better."

When he hears of Boozer's plans to opt out, it may get even better. That'll mean the money will be there to pay Millsap and keep Miller under the luxury tax, although it would come at the cost of letting Boozer -- their leading scorer and rebounder -- walk away with Utah getting nothing in return.

Nothing, that is, except for the chance to have the financial flexibility to lock up a rebounding machine who has shown over the past 13 games -- especially in Boston on Monday night when Millsap scored 32 points as Kevin Garnett, according to one Jazz player, kept calling over to teammate Kendrick Perkins: "You take him, Perk."

But if what Boozer was saying Wednesday night comes to fruition, or of the Jazz can find a taker for Kirilenko in a trade -- there's going to be nobody taking Millsap. The Jazz will keep him.

I heard Boozer has a special appointment with his OBGYN to see if he set back his time line from Millsap **** him too hard.

JK, I'd love to have Booze stick around but it sure doesn't sound like it.

Sounds like he has already made up his mind. Makes me even more sure he is milking his injury, why play when you don't give a damn. That's fine, I don't think he will be getting his sack back from Millsap any time soon. I hope he comes off the bench when he comes back...

So much for all the talk before the season that the Jazz wouldn't let individual agendas get in the way of the team's aspirations. Carlos Boozer delivered a bombshell to ESPN.com after Wednesday's game that he'd be opting out of his contract after the season. Not a bombshell in terms of the decision - - it's what everybody has long expected - - but in the timing of it all. Back on media day, Boozer said that he wasn't going to talk about free agency until after the season. Jazz general manager Kevin O'Connor called the timing "peculiar," which is being more than polite. That's because Boozer's going to have a second MRI on his injured left knee Thursday. It sounded Wednesday as if he's definitely going to be out a while longer and is experiencing some significant soreness. I asked O'Connor on the phone late Wednesday if Boozer's declaration puts any added pressure on the Jazz to make sure he doesn't leave for nothing in return after the season - - do they, in other words, need to trade him before he ever becomes a free agent - - and O'Connor said the Jazz have told Boozer that he is part of the foundation in Utah and they have heard in return that he is committed to staying. The question now is if Boozer will opt out just to re-sign a bigger contract with the Jazz - - as Gilbert Arenas did with Washington last summer - - or if Boozer's already planning his exit even as he's missed 15 games and counting with a strained left quadriceps tendon.

Come on.. As if this decision was ever in doubt? All players with an ETO and market value are going to opt out. We knew this from the start of the season. Memo will also opt out, Korver likely as well. The only difference is Boozer let everyone know he's doing it now. I mean, LeBron, Kobe, D-Wade will all be opting out as will Deron when his ETO comes up. It's part of the business and a means for those players to make even more money.

if he want a raise he should play and put good numbers.
Nobody is going to raise his salary if he misses 30 games per season.

If any of you know, what teams have the capacity to really raise him this summer?? Becuase remember, most teams are planning to be a player on the 2010 sweepstakes, and if so, maybe no teams are really interested in tieing up their money on an injury prone no defense undersized PF. If that's so, maybe his value decreases and we can sign him for less, same thing for Memo (why I think he won't opt out).

But if anything, I'm happy to hear the Jazz will keep Millsap.

I found this in another thread:

Given current projections, seven teams -- the Oklahoma City Thunder, the Memphis Grizzlies, the Portland Trail Blazers, the Detroit Pistons, the Atlanta Hawks, the Minnesota Timberwolves and the Miami Heat -- will have significant money to spend in 2009.

Only the Thunder and the Grizzlies will be able to make a max offer though.
The other teams will probably be able to offer around the same kind of money Boozer is makng right now.
Really bad timing and stupid comments by Boozer. What have you done lately to deserve a raise? Disappear in the playoffs? Not playing for 15 straight games?

Simple trade — Sheed for Booz.

Both are in final year of their contracts.

Pistons might go for it, and if they do, so should we.

That is the post defense that we are looking for, and quite frankly he is still a pretty effective offensive player as well. Given that he is in the final year of his deal there is considerable incentive to play hard.

Anyone with half a brain knew he was planning on opting out, but for him to come out like this----mid season, while he is milking an injury----is a very douchebag-esque move on Boozer's part. Some much for not talking about contracts until the season is over. Ive always tried to like Boozer, and I think he is a great player, but I just lot a whole lot of respect for the guy.

I am glad to hear KOC say that the Jazz intend on keeping Millsap. That makes me feel MUCH better!

Does it make sense for the Jazz to hold on to Boozer or deal him. How does that work money wise? I don't really want this to ruin this team. If this becomes an issue in the locker room I want Boozer out! I trust our ownership will make the right move!

It don't blame him for opting out but the timing and the way he said it confirms that he will not be back next year.

I see Boozer is still a sleazebag.

You guys should deal him to Detroit for Rasheed + picks or to Miami for Marion + picks. Maybe you could dump another contract (Harp?) in the trade. Don't count on him working with the Jazz on any sign and trades next offseason. This guy is purely out for himself. He ditched LeBron and will do the same thing to Deron no matter how much he says he likes playing with him.

BTW, it won't take much for Miami or Detroit to shed another contract or two to truly offer Boozer a max deal so might as well get what you can now or watch him bolt like Brand did last summer.
