OT: Utes or Utes

Post#1 » by stevebozell » Sat Jan 3, 2009 5:49 am

Forget this Utes or Cougars stuff, its pretty clear now that Utah's program is the better one(and I'm a Cougar fan). So in honor of their ass-kicking of 'Bama tonight, which team is better....the '04 team or the '08 team?

I've always thought that '04 team could have beat any team in the nation that year, and was robbed when they got stuck playing a garbage Pitt team....and that this years team was just a little too sloppy (on offense anyway) at times to be compared to that team. But clearly this teams defense is unbelievable, and is quite a bit better than '04s defense, so now Im not so sure who I would pick. Who would you pick?

Either way, the Utes deserve all the props they will get after this beating tonight.

04 team was better overall, but 08 team had dominant defense. They were like the Super Bowl Ravens with an actual offense.

But I think the 04 team was better overall.

Bottom line is this...both teams were good enough to be National Champions in their respective years.

08 is a lot better, a ton better defense, better RBs and WR corps..

I was talking more about depth. Reed, Casteel, Brown, Godfrey, and i'm forgetting the 5th.

Warren was talented but what happened to Savoy, was he even drafted when he left early??
everyone knew he was just a product of Urban Meyer offense

This years WR is more talented than 04
Freddie Brown was a nice surprise and he's as sure handed as they get
Godfrey is also sure handed and is fearless going over the middle
David Reed made some huge plays in the sugar bowl and will be a big factor next season
Casteel is speedy and good at making people miss

Johnson get's a lot of credit for the throws but it's the wide receivers that have to make the plays and they came up big in critical moments this season

Also Jeremy Brooks. Lots of WRs on the team.

Umm... I don't think so. Only a bitter BYU fan would post such nonsense.

This year's Alabama team >>>>>>>> Pitt in 04.

Maybe you could make an argument if Utah had barely beat Bama, but come on.

08 >>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>04.

Seriously???? Not even close.

This wasn't a fluky win and this wasn't a case of Alabama coming out flat. Utah straight-up whipped the Tide on both sides of the ball, and remember, this was against a team that was No. 1 for most of the year and was a quarter away from playing for the national title. This was a great, great 'Bama team, and Utah beat it like a drum.

This isn't 1984 BYU; that Cougars team didn't beat anyone as good as the 2008 Oregon State team, much less a TCU or an Alabama. This isn't 2004 Utah or 1999 Marshall or 1998 Tulane. So where, really, should Utah be put in the final rankings? If you're going to say No. 1, no matter what happens in the BCS championship game, it's hard to argue.
