We need to finish top 8 to not loose our 1st rnd pick

Anybody else realize this?
Minnesota receives a first rounder (Rodney Carney trade 070908) via Philadelphia receives a Utah 2009 first round pick (protected) (Kyle Korver trade 122907).(The Wolves will get it if the Jazz pick lower than 22nd in 2009, 17th in 2010, 15th in 2011, 16th in 2012 or 16th in 2013.)
Right now we'd have the 20th pick, so we need to get 5th seed in the West to avoid loosing the pick, and I'm sure we wont loose the pick in future years under the protected conditions. Glad we've turned it up of late as it looks like 5th will be easily achievable, and we might even get 3rd in the West.

MIN doesn't particularly want that pick this year anyway, since they are getting three more firsts, and have roster issues.

I believe that the protection works opposite of what you are saying.

Yeah, we have to finish 4th or better in the WC in order for us to deliver it to Minny....which would be ideal, really. We won't know what direction we would want to go with it until after free agency, which in the NBA comes after the draft (hence the selection of Kris Humphries and the subsequent signing of Carlos Boozer, rendering the pick worthless even if he hadn't' been a bust) so we won't know what positions we're needing yet anyhow.
Not just that, but this draft seems to be a fairly unimpressive one--though the conventional wisdom that it is a "bad draft" is a little overboard, imo, as well--especially in the depth department.
Really, we need to see how this summer goes, take stock of our long term position and then be able to have multiple picks in next year's draft. If we lose both Millsap and Boozer, for instance, we would know that we need to find not just one but TWO legit PFs.
Really, I think the best situation is to just deliver the pick this year, if possible. That way we can have every possible asset at our disposal to retool after the free agent situation shakes itself out.

Hmm, you might be right. I'm confused now!

Yes, the pick is protected in the Jazz's favor, meaning that if it's low enough it goes to Minnesota. This will be a bad draft and giving it to them this year instead of next is better.

Yes, if the Jazz want to keep the pick, the worse they do the better. However climbing the rankings like they are it's looking more and more unlikely that the Jazz will have a pick this year.
My guess is the Jazz finish 4th in the West behind LA, San, and most likely Denver or Portland.
Then obviously Boston, Cleveland and Orlando are going to finish ahead of the Jazz.
Leaving the Jazz behind...
Cleveland
LA
Boston
Orlando
San Antonio
Denver
Then the Jazz. Giving us the 24 pick, which would then go to Minnesota.
I have to tell you though I hate trading first round picks (even though this was obviously the right choice) because I love the draft, probably my favorite part of the year honestly, right up there with the playoffs and opening day. And I actually like some of the guys later in this draft this year.

Yea I guess it makes more sense, that we'd protect a good lottery pick rather than a bad one, just kind of confusing when you first read these notes.

2009 first round draft pick from Utah
Utah's own 2009 1st round pick to Minnesota via Philadelphia (top 22 protected in the 2009 Draft, top 15 protected in 2010, top 17 protected in 2011, top 16 protected in 2012, and top 16 protected in the 2013 Draft). However, if: (i) Utah's own 2009 first round draft is not protected, and (ii) Utah is entitled to receive New York’s own 2009 first round draft pick, then Utah shall convey to Minnesota via Philadelphia the more favorable of its own 2009 first round draft pick and New York’s 2009 first round draft pick. Further, if: (x) Utah did not satisfy its obligations to Philadelphia in 2009 and (y) if Utah's own 2010 first round draft is not protected, and (z) if Utah is entitled to receive New York’s own 2010 first round draft pick, then Utah shall convey to Minnesota via Philadelphia the least favorable of its own 2010 first round draft pick and New York’s 2010 first round draft pick. If Minnesota via Philadelphia does not receive a first round draft pick from Utah pursuant to the foregoing in any of the Drafts from 2009 through 2013, then Utah’s obligation to send a first round draft pick to Minnesota via Philadelphia shall be extinguished and Utah shall instead convey to Minnesota via Philadelphia Utah’s own 2014 second round draft pick and pay to Philadelphia cash. [Philadelphia - Utah, 12/29/2007 and then Minnesota - Philadelphia, 7/9/2008]
http://realgm.com/src_future_draftpicks.phpI've seen that one from nbadraft.net. Realgm quote is more the way I understand it.
I didn't realize we were that close to losing it, actually.
http://www.coolstandings.com/basketball/basketball_standings.asp?sn=2008&col=expw&sort=desc&sim=s&v=lWe pass two more teams and it goes to Minny.

While I hate to lose the 1st rd pick, I'd much rather have HC advantage in at least the first round of the playoffs. We have a ton of young talent on this roster anyway, and this draft class is not particuarly highly regarded. The only area that we have where I think that a draft pick in the mid 20's could possibly help out would be either as a 3rd or 4th string pg or as a backup PF if either Milsap and / or Boozer leave. It seems to me though that the odds of the Jazz matching an offer for Milsap are probably 80% or better, and the likelihood that Boozer stays is now increasing, probably 60% or better. With Korver's recent play, the pick is well worth the price we paid (Giricek) to give it up.

Yeah I've heard a lot about how this is going to be a rather weak draft class, and ofcourse I prefer HCA as well. I guess this will push us to keep both Boozer and Millsap as we wont have many options via the draft with just a 2nd round pick. Next year should be a fine draft year for the Jazz as it looks like we'll get a high pick as the Knicks currently sit on top of a few teams which will likely pass them next season, including Washington, GS, Minnesota, Oklahoma City, and maybe Toronto. This year they'll have the 9th best chance at the number one pick, next year they'll likely do as bad worse. Great news for us!

The Jazz are also up against some luxury tax concerns this off-season. Ditching the guaranteed salary of a first round pick, especially a late one that probably won't help us anytime soon, wouldn't really be the worst thing in the world.

late first could be used next season to move up in the draft by packaging it with nyk pick.

If the Jazz keep their pick in 2009, that means the NYK pick might still be owed to Minnesota in 2010. So the two can't be packaged together.

Yes, if the 2009 pick goes to Minnesota, then the Jazz will unconditionally have two picks in 2010, our own and New York's.

ya, that's what i meant with my original post, we should be able to combine 2 draft picks in 2010 to move up, if necessary.

right, if the Jazz give up their 2009 1st rd pick (which wouldn't bother me for the reasons stated above) we have the NY pick and our own pick in 2010. We could bundle the two together for a higher pick (replacing Okur or Boozer, I would guess) if the lottery balls don't bounce our way just right.

The Jazz could honestly have as many as three rookies next year if the team keeps their second round pick, and brings over the two Euro's.

I know it would be for the best, but I hate the thought of no draft pick. My wife love the Oscars, Emmys, etc. etc.
I just can't hang.
But NBA draft night!!!!
Who's in the green room??
Who just got traded??
The Jazz picked WHO??
What about the second round??
Got my notepad out takin' notes.
That's a
great night of TV for me.
