Why No Harp?

Post#1 » by isawoj » Sat Apr 4, 2009 9:55 pm

I know many of you hate Harpring, but ever since the return of Boozer and the string of DNP's and 5 minute games by Harpring, the Jazz have been awful.

I think Jerry and Harp had some type of falling out since Harp wasn't used in the Denver game. He has always been able to fluster Melo and get him to commit fouls, get a T, just get into his head.

I just don't think Matt is physically able to play 82 games a year for even 10 minutes a game. You notice when Sloan does use Matty it's usually for a good chunk of the game.

I am sure Sloan is chomping at the bit to use Matty but realizes his body just isn't up to it anymore.

MLA = Missed Lay-Up Attempt's.

And truthfully I'd argue that there are more MLA's then ever before, the Jazz are shooting the ball terrible from short distance lately.

But against New Orleans did you see how out of breath Matty was after about 8 minutes of play, guy just doesn't have it anymore.

Part of him sucking wind after 8 minutes probably has to do with getting less run in games on a regular basis.

I am obviously a big Harp fan and it is realistic to say that his game has fallen off a good bit the last few years, but why a veteran, hard nosed contributor isn't playing is beyond me.

This team was playing so much better before Boozer came back from injury. Once Boozer came back, Jerry futzed with the rotation and things have been more bad than good since then.

Would playing Harpring have made a dramatic difference in this bad stretch? Probably not. Would playing him have contributed to 2-3 more wins? Probably.

Dude, Sloan is the biggest Harpring homer on earth, and has proved that over the past 2 seasons. If he had the chance to play Harpring right now he'd be doing it. There's a reason Harpring isn't out there, he just can't do it anymore.

Exactly, so for Sloan to not play Harpring says a lot about how he's been playing. I am pleasantly surprised that harpring isn't being utilized by sloan more.

i think i heard that per team policy, if a player doesnt get 20 min in a game, he has to do 20 min on an exercise bike so he doesn't lose his wind. if harp is losing his abilities, its not cuz he isnt using them.

You guys think he'll retire when his contract ends in 2010?

He might retire after this year. He doesn't want to sit on the bench for an entire year and not play, he's not that kind of guy. Maybe he and the Jazz work on a buy out to free up some space for the Jazz and still allow Harp to get some cash.

What is he making next season? Around $6m or so? Maybe trade his expiring contract for someone that can fill a need. Teams are always looking for expiring contracts.
