This time I agree with Fuddy-duddy Sloan.

I usually think the team shoul lossen up a bit, but I think Sloan is right in the wiretap. Your introduction to the league should be work, not spring break. Players, especially those wanting to make a name for them selves should be focusing on their professional dreams hard and putting young guys with their first tase of the high life (many of whom aren't 21 yet) in that environment is risky. Frankly they shouldn't have it in Orlando or West Valley either. Summer camps should be in a secluded high school gym in the middle of North Dakota, or Saskatchewan.

Im ok with his and Jazz decision as Sloan has always shown that he cares about young players and their futures. He would make a great President of the Utah Jazz but his antiquated ideas of basketball need to go. Watching Sloan coach is like watching paint dry.
Top 4 seed in the West!!! Guaranteed!!!

I look at it as a chance to see how responsible a young guy is.
If you take him to Vegas, and he cant handle himself, you dont want him on your team. That would be the best chance to find that out, in my opinion, rather than once youve given him money and a roster spot.

I can see where Sloan is coming from on this. Unfortunately, a lot of this is probably driven by the media and fron toffice types. They're figuring if they are going to go to scout/cover the summer league, it might as well be a fun destination for them.

I see your point, but at 20 maturity can be a work in progress that can be just fine. You don't want to put a group of children in a room filled with lead paint just to see which one is dumb enough to lick the walls. Another thing I think the atmosphere of Vegas can fracture the team. There are so many places to go. I know hardly any of the guys will be NBA players but a little camaraderie should still be expected. I just don't see the value in getting into that. It wouldn't even be so bad if they were out in Henderson of Summerlin but they are all right on the strip. Just would feel too much like a vacation.

Ya that is a great idea...draft a guy, sign him to a contract and then see how mature and responsible he is by throwing him into the most tempting place and situations possible with other young kids around him to help him along the path of good and righteousness. Very, very smart.

Well this league has been going on for a little while now....have you heard of any problems or complaints? Or is it just Jazz players (most of which will never even sniff vet camp) that cant handle it?

Sloan talks about stories he has heard of players and what they do down there in Vegas so I'm sure they have lots of problems down there that are never made public.

You really think these supposed stories would be kept secret, if they were as serious as ruining some young top draft picks career?
It wouldnt be possible to keep a secret.

I can say yes, the NBA has lots of secrets. Many of them are known by the staff at the Grand America, and not the general public.

You really think the NBA/NBA teams cant keep a secret? Trust me, I know for a fact there are things that are never made public about players.

I know there are alot of secrets..the Jazz have them as well.
And the Grand America example makes my point...those things go on here also, and dont ruin guys careers.

If you look at guys that have been busts because of off the court issues, we here all about their problems.
Of course there are things that are kept secret, but when a team has to part ways with a guy because of an issue like whatever youre afraid might happen in Vegas, it makes the GM look much better to be able to use that as an excuse rather than to say that you guessed wrong on the guys talent level.
Trust me, you would hear about it if that was the reason a guy ruined his career.

Re: This time I agree with Fuddy-duddy Sloan.
I personally would rather have sloan in GSW than Nellie's gimmick exciting crap but no playoff bball, sloan keeps the players consistent as possible yet play within the scheme, plays good defense, runs the plays and don't CHUCK the ball. Be happy you guys have sloan, he's a class act in the nba and well respected.

Re: This time I agree with Fuddy-duddy Sloan.
Well duh if it ruined his career it would be made public but how many players get in trouble later in their career with off court issues? This is not the way you want to introduce young players and young talent into the NBA. The NBA is not about making millions then blowing it on late nights at the clubs with your newly acquired stardom with girls hanging all over you while drinking your drinks and having your body guards beat people up while your packing. It's just not the kind of environment you want your players to be around, I would have the summer league up in Alaska where there would be nothing to do but workout and play if it was up to me. Maybe even the Russian tundra...go all Rocky on em.

Again, point out to me where the Vegas Summer League has caused any of these problems?
The issues NBA players have are issues that are far broader than that, that originated years before they even made it to the league...Vegas isnt causing any of it.

I think it's hugly exagerrated. Don't you have night clubs in Miami? Or even in SLC? Casino it's only a one form of spending money - if can't control yourself you can go over the limit in any place of the world. Even in Russian tundra. Do you know how much vodka you need to drink to stay warm there?!?!?!

DR - I have to disagree with you on this one. I don't think a young guy should be pampered, but it's not like the summer league should be boot camp either.

Not boot camp, but you can't study for your SATs at Disneyland. You can, but it's not ideal.

Re: This time I agree with Fuddy-duddy Sloan.
The Vegas summer league exists because the scouts, coaches, GMs etc. want a working vacation and an excuse to go to Vegas. It's that simple.
