Jazz notes from USA mini-camp

by The Sheik
Ronnie Brewer, SG, Utah
Showcase stats: 11 points, 2 rebounds, 3 assists, 6 steals, 4-7 fg, 1-2 3pt, 2-4 ft
After a quiet couple of days in practice, Brewer helped himself with a strong showing in the Showcase. He was one of the best defenders in camp, and the staff likes guys who create turnovers, which he did in bunches.
Paul Millsap, PF, Utah
Showcase stats: 3 points, 4 rebounds, 1 assist, 1-6 fg, 0-1 3pt, 1-2 ft
Millsap had a couple of nice drives to the bucket on Friday and was solid on the boards (as expected), but was outplayed by Kevin Love over the course of the three days.
Kyle Korver, SF, Utah
Showcase stats: 12 points, 4 rebounds, 3 blocks, 5-11 fg, 2-5 3pt
Korver never really got hot over the three days, but still shot the ball pretty well. And he showed that he can be more than just a shooter. When he caught a pass off a screen, he was quick to recognize help from the defense, finding his teammate open on the baseline on several occasions. In general, he played hard and somehow, came up with three blocked shots on Saturday.

It's summer league, I would expect a player on a rookie contract to outplay a veteran, plus Kevin Love is a very good player, so it's not to say it's a total shock. Kevin averaged 14.0ppg and 9.6rpg after the all-star game in 27.8mpg. He was 15.8ppg 12.9rpg PER36, great for a rookie.

Not that it means much but the related article titled below had Kover ranked #10.

Um, it's not summer league. These guys are playing for a chance to be on Team USA for the World Championships and/or the 2012 Olympics. You would expect the best players to play the best.
That said, as you mentioned and some people on this board obviously don't understand, there is no shame in being outplayed by Kevin Love - he is a very good player.

Why would anyone "shudder" at the idea of Love outplaying Millsap?! Love is a better all around player and will outplay Millsap his whole career. Millsap is a solid player and worth the money and all but Love is gonna be an All-Star.
You've got to be kidding if you think 3 blocks is luck. Let's not forget that Korver's first (positive) stat in a Jazz uniform was a block. He knows how to play D he just lacks the lateral quickness to guard on the perimeter. Its not for lack of know how or effort.
Brewer is gonna be a baller tho!

Pop quiz, how many guards do you ever see get three blocks in a game? To be in the position to get 3 blocks was nothing but luck. I wasn't mocking his defense just stating the fact that he was LUCKY to be in the right place at the right time.

Yeah lucky to be in the right place at the right time or maybe just knows where to be to block shots. Watch Korver closely this year and watch how many blocks he would get if the NBA hadn't turned into a ballerina dance recital where you can't stop a player from scoring without getting a personal foul. Players in Olympic ball always get more blocks because everywhere else in the world still allows players to play defense.

LOL, I think Millsap prolly had a lot on his mind during this camp, I wouldn't **** overreact like most of you are doing. Wait until training camp and preseason before y'all start **** bricks.
Millsap has always been one of our most consistently improving players along with Deron.

I like Millsap as much as the next guy, but this review isn't particularly flattering: Paul Millsap: A bubble guy for the cutdown to 25 that'll be announced in November. He may be too undersized and slow, and not a good enough shooter, to be a strong FIBA player.
I am looking forward to see what we can get out of Korver and Brewer this year. I like this lineup: DWill, Korver, Brewer, Millsap and Memo with a sub lineup of Price or Maynor, Miles, Harpring, AK (playing PF) and Koufos getting a lot of burn.

I can't help but laugh at the fact that you are trying to prove that KYLE KORVER is in any sort of shot blocker.

There were several games he's played for he Jazz where he's gotten multiple blocks....he does have very good timing he just doesn't have the athletic ability to go with it

Why does it matter that Kevin Love outplayed Paul Millsap? Because he is our Poward Forward of the future and a 3 year veteran.
No offense to Kevin Love, who is a nice player, but the Jazz are running a one of only 5 players who put up 20-10. Seriously. I dont care what anyone says, Millsap really should have been noticeably outplayed by Kevin Love. Love is what? 20 years old? He played one season at UCLA and one solid rookie year for a lottery team. Millsap was a 3 year player at LATech, and has been a rotation player on 3 NBA Playoff teams.
Not that any of this will have any baring on the season ahead, but you most certainly do not want to hear this.

Hmmm... pretty sure i never said Korver was any type of shot blocker. Just that he earns his stats and that it's ridiculous to say that he was lucky not once but 3 times in the, most likely, short amount of playing time he received. But then again maybe the other players felt bad for him so they let him block them. But this is beside the point....
You guys act like Millsap was outplayed by Mark Madsen.
Millsap wasn't signed as our future PF because of his freakish talents. He was signed as our future PF because the man is a work horse. You posers who complain about how the Jazz made a mistake on Millsap are the same people who moan and piss about how Boozer is a Loozer cuz he plays half-heartedly and can't play thru an ingrown hair. Either be happy that the Jazz have an offensive beast who never gives it his all and sits behind the bench half the season or be happy that they got a guy that works his tail off every second of every game and earns his paycheck. A paycheck by the way that would have been wasted on lesser talent if not on Millsap. Millsap is the Anti-Boozer and that alone should make everyone happy to have him. Not every team can have a Dwight Howard or a Kevin Garnett.
