Training Camp!

Post#1 » by carrottop12 » Wed Sep 23, 2009 3:17 am

Well, with training camp just a couple of days away I figured we could start talking about training camp and other things coming up. Maybe get some pictures from Media day on Friday.

Here is the roster that I know of going into camp.

PG: Deron Williams/Ronnie Price/Eric Maynor
SG: Ronnie Brewer/Kyle Korver
SF: CJ Miles/Andrei Kirilenko/Ronald Dupree
PF: Carlos Boozer/Paul Millsap
C: Mehmet Okur/Kosta Koufos/Kyrylo Fesenko/Goran Sutton

Mehmet Okur is now the only player on the team over 30 years old so I think it's obvious the Jazz are still in the state of rebuilding.

I doubt Sutton makes the roster, however the Jazz could hold onto him and still have an extra spot on the roster to sign someone in case of injury.

My biggest questions going into camp are who will be the back up PG? Ronnie or Eric?

Does Dupree have a chance to make the team and find his way into the rotation?

Has there ever been a more foreign line up at Center position of one team in the history of the NBA?

My guess is Suton will be sent to the D-League and Fes will be the one in a suit usually.
The backup PG is Price's to lose IMO. Maynor might get some playing time only if either Price or Deron gets hurt or if he clearly outplays Price, which I find very difficult to happen this season.
Dupree makes the roster IMO.
I'm really curious to see how AK and CJ are looking. They supposedly added some weight over the summer. I wonder if it will be noticeable.
That is a pretty good and deep roster. Not a lot of teams in the league have the luxury of having players like Korver, AK and Millsap off the bench. If CJ has improved his game and Boozer doesn't become a distraction, this team will really surprise people.

I'd like to see CJ have a good training camp to give him some confidence going into the season. Sounds like he's been on the court a lot this summer.

Sutton & Koufas Are not from foreign countries! The jazz team coming into training camp is much like last years before all the injurys. Maynor, Dupree and & maybe Sutton are somewhat upgrades in talent from the ones who are gone, except for the loss of Harpring. This could be a great team if all re-gells!
I Think Dupree will be very helpful as a forward/Guard who can play some D.

Rock On Jazz!!

Technically Koufas is a foreign player. Otherwise he wouldn't be allowed to play on the Greek team.

I believe he has dual citizenship.

Also Wes Mathews and Paul Harris will be in Camp- two other possible harpring replacements.

I see the possible Harpring replacements like this:

Dupree-Good slasher, defender and athelete but older never developed his outside shot- similar to Brewer-I have seen Dupree the least.
Paul Harris-is a physical freak-very strong and quick with very long arms for a 6'4" guy. Known as very physical defender. Played as an undersized PF at Syracuse. He is a unknown as to his guard skills. Athletically similar to Maggette or Wade.
Wes Mathews was at Summer League- basically a good all around role player. Doesn't excell really at anything but doesn't hurt you either.

Personally I would take chance on Harris. On the low side you get a good perimeter defender and energy guy. On the high side you get a developing star.

I give Suton 0 chance to make the team.

I wonder if Boozer going to show up? It he really wants to be traded he may hold out. I cannot believe the Jazz going to start training camp on the wrong note by having Boozer there after he demanded a trade. I dont think Jazz ever get value for him so they might as well cut their ties and trade him for the best offer available.

What makes you think that? He has a full unguarranteed contract. Oh and the little problem that he is terrible at playing NBA basketball. He makes Greg Ostertag look quick and agile. Suton's other problem is that he is 6'10" not 7'1".

He might not make it the whole year, but there is no reason to cut him right away. He can take charges and give fouls if he is needed. Other wise he is a guy in a suit who plays during practice or plays in Orem. The roster isn't full.

The first thing the Jazz must figure out is which will be the starting lineup and team rotation; once the Jazz set the main rotation they will decide which of the underdog campers make the roster (Suton, Dupree, Harris, Matthews).
Of course camp and pre season performances will determine the outcome, but I have a feeling that the Jazz should use a satring lineup of Williams, Korver, Brewer, Boozer and Koufos. We already know Boozer and Okur shouldn't play VERY long minutes together because they hurt our interior D enough to be a permanent concern (and Boozer's not in Jazz long term plans, so he should play less minutes this season...). Besides, you can really force rivals to tweak some plans if you throw out there a second line featuring Kirilenko, Millsap and Okur. Fesenko should make the Collins minutes when season starts, and try to show where his game really is... I guess we'll know sooner than later this season...
Korver and Brewer showed good moments playing together last season, and compliment each other well, while Kirilenko height and help D ability would help for Millsap lack of height. Kirilenko/Korver is the weakest pair off the wing foursome and should play not major minutes together IMHO.
We need a last resource big man, so If Suton shows he has any kind of game, he will make it for cheap partially warranted money.
As for Dupree, Harris, Matthews, any of them can make the cut as a 13th or 14th man; they're athletic enough and seems to be serious hard workers and kind of resilient dudes willing to fight for their spots and their right to contribute...
Ok... enough bla bla bla...

Where did you find the full roster? I only know of Dupree being the only FA.

Technically Sutton is foreign. He was not born in America and immigrated here as a teenager. Kosta does have dual-citizenship.

If Matt retires we have 12 on the roster which would make it all the more likely that 2 players could make the roster. Sutton and Dupree have the inside track.

Nothing official yet. However, this article stated that Matthews and Harris were invited.

If I had to guess I would think Kevin Lyde would be invited and possibly 2-3 other players. I dont think we go with a 4th pg. If Jerry is smart he lets RonnieP and Maynor get a lot of PT.

I think Jerrys bias for rookies and love for Price at the end of last season give him the job.

Williams' been missing a sidekick ability to handle the basketball a little bit since Fisher departure, and IMO there's a real chance we will end up watching Price or Maynor playing off guard a little bit to take some pressure out off Deorn's hands at certain times. Both will have their chances I think, but almost certainly the primary backup PG spot is Price's to lose.
