PG

Bear with me on this one. If we are to become more of a championship team, I am to argue that our all-star player cannot be a PG. The last superstar PG that lead his team to winning the finals was Magic, and he had all-star caliber players behind him with Kareem, Worthy, etc.

Lakers have Kobe
Boston with the 3, non of which are a PG
Spurs have Duncan
Bulls had Jordan
Rockets had the Dream

Your thoughts?

Tony Parker was pretty good...I think we can have an all-star PG, we just need other all-stars too (like every championship team has).

I agree that Parker is good, but Duncan carried that team. We have Williams carrying this team. Didn't work for Kidd with NJ, didn't work for Iverson. The only other PG I can think of that may have carried his team was Billups, but I wouldn't call him a superstar.

Bottom line is I think Portland is in a better position with Roy and even Oklahoma City is in a better position with Durrant. Only time will tell.

The real issue is Dwill is not a PG but a SG masking himself as a PG. Start Maynor and move Dwill to SG then offense will flow better and PG defense will improve.

I really like the idea of starting Mayner and williams at the guards. Fess or trade for a real defensive center with Boozer at PF and Brewer at sf.

Kirlinko, Okur, Milsap, Price,(soon) and Rookie on the second team until Miles gets back!

When Miles and Korver get Back, trade Brewer, Harpring and Kufous for a real defensive center!

I like Deron's size for PG, but not really for SG. I think a lot of advantage he gets on the offensive end is that he is larger than his defenders. Put him at SG, and you will take this away against most teams. Look at how he got totally shut down last night by a much larger guy that gave him fits. Deron at SG is not a good idea at all.

The question would be: how comfortable would Deron be playing as a SG? like hammer said, he will not have the height and strength to be as dominant as he is right now at the PG.

I have always said PG is the most overrated position, great PG's rarely lead teams to championships. You need a good wing, and a great big man, or the other way around, the PG is a supporting roll.

I absolutely agree with this statement and this is my point.

I understand some of the frustration with Deron but it seems like he's getting more and more underated on this board every game......the fact that he is often the only guy on the floor that can hit a shot from more than 15 feet I think has to do with alot of the team's struggles this year.....as far as the OP nice to just disregard the 2 examples in the past few years that aren't in line with your tinking.....I'd argue that since Parker and Billups both were MVP of the finals would be a good argument of their importance but that's just me.....

Williams carries this team? You have to be kidding. DWade carries a team. LBJ carries a team. Even Kobe can carry a team. Williams isn't even the most efficient player on the Jazz roster for goodness sakes, and the team played some of its best ball when he was gone for a couple games this year. As I remember, the Jazz started out last season about 7-1 without him as well. He did shoot the ball very well last night.

Well most people would argue that Paul "carries" the hornets....and they have won alot more with him out so it's obvious he is overrated...... I'm pretty sick of the deron hate just because a rookie filling in for him played 1.5 good games and a guy that has flat out said he didn't want to be here is suddenly playing well.....for anyone that feels the PG position is overrated, especially in Sloan's "system" I have 2 words for you: Palacio, McLeod......

In the 40 year history of the award, the Finals MVP has been won by a PG 8 times:

Jo Jo White - 1976 Finals MVP
Dennis Johnson - 1979 Finals MVP
Magic Johnson - 1980/1982/1987 Finals MVP
Isiah Thomas - 1990 Finals MVP
Chauncey Billups - 2004 Finals MVP
Tony Parker - 2007 Finals MVP

12- Centers: Wilt, Reed (2), Walton, Unseld, KAJ (2), Hakeem (2), Shaq (3)
6 - Power Fowards: Maxwell, Moses, Worthy, Duncan (3)
5 - Small Forwards: Havlicek, Barry, Bird (2), Pierce
10 - Shooting Guards: West, Dumars, Jordan (6), Wade, Kobe

This doesn't even include guys like Cousey, since the award started in 1969, and Frazier about as valuable as Reed in their peak years. Oscar Robertson was another big time PG. Also what's happened in the past isn't always important, and while the Jazz haven't won a title yet, they certainly are good when they have a great PG running the show.

You might want to rethink that, the guy has averaged 8.7 apg for his career, and he's second in the NBA with 9.9apg right now, and on the rise. Also people around the league call him the second best PG behind Chis Paul. Hell IMO he's the best PG, though Nash might be a better example of a pure point guard at the moment.
