So What's Next....

Post#1 » by QuantumMacgyver » Wed Dec 23, 2009 2:58 am

With the news of the Maynor trade, most every Jazz fan is praying for a follow-up move. So what do you all think happens next? Bulls, Wiz, Miami, Orlando? What move is next and who will be involved?

What about Hinrich and Thomas for Boozer and Korver? Fixes the Bulls glaring need for a low-post threat and scores us Sloan's dream 2 guard. Also saves the Jazz another $6 million after the Lux tax. (Unless I'm mistaken)

Any ideas?

Im not sure on any followup move that could happen. Should be interesting.

Also, it seems like strange timing to make such a trade. Just days after Boozer runs his mouth again. I have a feeling this is going to lead to another move. Probably not until 2010, but if the Jazz are trying to dump cash they still have a ways to go. If this isn't simply a cash dump then something else is on the horizon. Very exciting right now.

They will sign some 10 day contracts until they absolutely have to sign a remainder of the season deal for the rookie minimum. They end up spending like $150,000.

It crossed my mind too because 13 dudes under contract are mandatory by NBA rules. Right now Jazz have only 12 guys under contract, and I just don't know if they will be allowed to play without a 13th...

I also found this kind of odd. Of course the jazz always seem to be content with little moves, so maybe there is no follow up.

With Korver's knee out, there are only 11 players available.

The Wiz would probably be too scared but I think the Wizards should be open to the idea of trading Butler, Stevenson, Mike James, and Oberto to the Jazz for Kirilenko and Korver.

The Wiz need a dynamic defender who doesn't need alot of touches and the Jazz need a dynamic scorer. I think Sloan would love Butler.

It's a wash salary wise.

I think this deal happened now so OKC could trade Harpring again before the trade deadline.

Jazz will pick up a point guard from the d league until january. cut him then, then re-sign or make a trade for new players if the season isn't going well!

Does trading a player's salary against a 'trade exception' save you money against the lux tax?

Depends what you mean. Luxury tax is based on payroll. Any time you take back less salary than you sent out, your payroll goes down as do your taxes (if any). Any time you take in more salary than you send out, your payroll goes up as do your taxes (if any). So I'm not 100% sure what you're asking...but if the Jazz acquire a player with their new trade exception, that player's salary will count against the tax in full.

For instance - Miami has a $4,260,000 trade exception for M. Banks. If we trade away $10M + CJ(3.6) for $10M salary + $3.6 trade exception, have we just trimmed $3.6M salary? ($7.2 w/tax)

http://espn.go.com/blog/truehoop/post/_/id/11675/implications-of-maynor-deal-far-reaching

This showed the Jazz trading for non-guarateed contract and then cutting the player. Wondered if the trade exception had the same effect.

Yes, you are right. As long as our salary goes down, our luxury tax goes down. Doesn't matter if it's through a non-guaranteed contract or a trade exception or just taking advantage of the 125% rule. In the scenario you post, as long as we send out $13.6M and only take back $10M, we trim $3.6M in salary and $3.6M in taxes for a total of $7.2M cash savings.
