NBADRAFT.NET takes a shot at Deron

http://online.wsj.com/article/SB1000142 ... theadlinesThe article asks the question of the Final Four helps players get drafted higher, and as an example it throws out Williams who was drafted ahead of Paul, despite having lower career points, rebounds, assists, and steals. Bugs me a little that of all the examples they chose someone who seems to have taken Paul's title as the best PG this season. Also it seems as if one year Paul is considered better, then Williams, then Paul again, and now Williams again. They are basically on the same level, and were just drafted one spot apart, and both are superstars, why use him as an example of a player that was drafted too high thanks to his Final Four appearance. A cheapshot if you ask me.

Not a very good comparison in my opinion, but hardly a cheapshot. Anyone with a half a brain knows that these guys are almost impossible to compare, and like you said, they've been jostling back and forth for the best PG title ever since they got in the league.

They were character questions about Paul after he sucker punched that guy in the nuts. They were minor question but still questions.
Deron fits better into the Jazz's system. It wasn't just because of Deron's final four play... haha that sounds like foreplay.

I'm going to refrain from turning this thread into yet another DWill v. CP3 argument... that article reeks of someone who started out with a conclusion and went hunting for data to back it up. I don't think Deron's tournament success had anything to do with why they picked him over CP3. Just a poor article.

It's a bad website, other than their awesome countdown timer.

I think his leadership in the final 4 WAS a factor.

CP3's and DWill's stats are all relative. I agree, bad comparison. The author should've stuck with his Sean May examples.

Yeah....they've been left far behind. Too bad, they were an innovator in the field, but they haven't stayed with the game. They've become a bit of a bad joke. DX is far better among independent websites, and ESPN's insider content from Chad Ford is the best inside coverage out there.

Not the best comparison, but that doesn't mean its not valid. This article isn't saying that DW is horrible compared to CP3, its only stating that part of the decision is performance in the final four. I recall the jazz using the word "winner" multiple times to describe DW before drafting, in reference to the great run Ill made in the tourny. So the final four outcome I think did influence the jazz a little, perhaps just enough to go for DW. Its interesting to consider what would have happened if CP3 and Wake won the championship (and DW didn't make the tourney)......I think the jazz might have gone with CP3.

If Paul hadn't punched Julius Hodge he would have been a Jazz man.

I disagree with that as well. It would have made the choice a lot more difficult but I bet they still would have gone with Deron.

Deron Williams is not a superstar, no matter how many times you may say it. Leave the superstar label for the likes of Lebron James and Dwayne Wade. DWill is not in their universe.
