Ex Sonics Fans to Boo Thunder in Portland

Post#1 » by SD2042 » Fri Feb 6, 2009 11:11 pm

http://basketball.realgm.com/src_wireta ... o_thunder/

When the Thunder play the Blazers in Portland next week, some angry Seattle fans plan to attend the game to "boo both teams."

The Save Our Sonics group said it has secured blocks of tickets for members at a discounted price.

The leaders are also planning an even bigger trip when the Thunder returns to Portland on April 13.

It's unfortunate that the players will get the brunt of the boos when they go to Portland. They have no control of the business being move from a city due to lack of profits.

HAHAHAHA sounds like there will be alot of Gary Payton and Shawn Kemp jersey's in the stands. Hell GP might even be in attendence....
To quote GetSeven
With Jimmy at the 2 spot this lineup (along with depth) has the potential to be the best since the Jordan/Pippen days easy.

There really is no need to boo Kevin Durant and the other guys. Why would you go to a basketball game just to boo both teams for more than 2 hours? They have nothing to do with what happened and it's really not why you should attend a basketball game.

I'm an ex Sonics fan and I think this is sad.

I just don't believe it. I really don't. I think the Save Our Sonics strategy is being mischaracterized. They must be going to the game to raise banners for a new team, calling out Stern, and maybe attacking the Thunder's ownership group. All that's perfectly fair and called for, in my mind. But I can't imagine them booing the players. The guys on the old Sonics board who were involved with the Save Our Sonics movement were smart and classy. They all had a connection to the players and I just don't think they'd take their frustration out on the team. I don't believe it.

As for booing the Blazers, hell... that just comes naturally to a Sonics fan! Old habits die hard!

if any of the ex-sonics fans are listening, you are all a bunch of TOOLS, that is the most ignorant thing that ive heard in a long time, like the players chose to move, and if you think that the ex-sonics owner gives a **** about you wasting your money on a ticket to go and boo a team, you are all dumber than you are going to look at that game, get a life and focus on the seahawks they could use that energy

I can't say I blame them... I'm not going to make any personal attacks, but quite honestly, I might act the same way if the Blazers moved out of Portland. I too question the rationality of the move, but they have pretty good reason to boo the Thunder.

No need to call people names, but this is definitely an interesting story. As big L said, this doesn't really ring true with my experiences with the S.O.S. group. It is definitely possible that their effort are mis-characterized. I would love to hear from one of the members of the group, if any are coming through and checking on this board, because they obviously have a different perspective on the issue.

Tread lightly though, this is obviously a touchy subject for a couple groups of people...

Ok I'll give my take.

First off I remember watching the Sonics win the only major sports championship for the city of Seattle.

Back then the NBA finals were on tape delay.

I remember the good times.

And I remember the bad

And then it got worse.

Now as a member of Sonics Fans United (before Save our Sonics even existed, which I was also a part of) who paid money on two different occasions to fly a banner over the Key Arena in Seattle and once over the New Orleans Arena during the All-Star game last year.

The first time was a request to have Wally Walker fired.

The second was to have Howard Shultz sell the team, obviously it wasn't our intention to sell to a guy like Clay. We simply wanted a winning team in Seattle and an owner who was committed to winning.

Third was to ask the owners to vote no on the move from Seattle to OKC.

But as fans there is only so much you can do. I don't have extra 400mil lying around in my saving account. And although the entire time the mayor of Seattle was telling us that he wouldn't accept a buy out, what did he do? He took a buy out because Stern said the NBA wouldn't be back in Seattle unless he took it up the arse.

I absolutely hate Clay Bennett and have wished numerous times to meet him in an alley but that also goes for Howard Shultz the Coffee king of Seattle. Because even though those two richard heads may have owned the team, the team belonged to fans of the Seattle Super Sonics. We were the heart of the Sonics. 41 years of support and money in the NBA pockets should mean something.

Bottom line Clay Hi-jacked the team, period. There was plenty of fan support.

Now I seriously doubt that SOS is going to go down to Portland to get in Nick Collisons face and boo him. That guy never wanted to leave Seattle and is a class act. And no they won't be up in Nate McMillans grill booing him either.

But will they be raising signs that claim Clay Bennett is a complete "fill in your word of choice"? Absolutely!

Now I've never really been a big fan of booing but booing the Blazers is about as natural for Sonics fans as it is for --Let's just say it's natural... no need for the derogatory comments--.

But the point is we Sonic fans feel like we got the raw end of the stick and it's clear we did. So here is our chance to voice it.

Please don't be sucked in by a misleading RealGM headline. Nowhere in the body of that article does it mention SOS going there to boo. If you looked into it I think you would find that SOS was a very professional group who worked to find real solutions. I would suggest you show a little more respect to the people of Seattle, especially since they lost a team which was in their city for 41 years.

I definitely agree with you colombianbrew! Thus, I wanted to hear stories from guys like wiff that obviously know what's going on a little better. Thanks a lot for letting us know what's up wiff. I totally sympathize with your situation. Now, not for a second would I want this team to leave OKC, but I definitely understand where you're coming from.

There's an orphaned quote. Who said they were going to "boo both teams". I can't imagine why they'd be mad at the Blazers. Many former Sonics fans decided to start cheering for Portland.

Anyhow, this is just a move for them to let off steam. The Thunder are like an expansion squad anyway, so when Seattle does get a new team, they won't be much worse.
