Offseason Gameplan
So the Thunder are going to be under the cap roughly 10 million next season
Expirings - Earl, Chucky, Damien - Totaling 13.38 million
I believe that Presti can pull off another "Kurt Thomas" type of a deal
So many teams will be needing to get under the luxury tax line
Also with the 2010 FA circus alot of teams will be looking to dump salaries
I do not see the need to add any significant FA
Maybe a couple good vets
Already have 11 spots filled
1 maybe 2 coming with the draft
that leaves 2 or 3 spots for FA
Anyone have any ideas?
2009/10
Nick Collison - $6,250,000
Earl Watson - $6,600,000
Nenad Krstic - $5,400,000
Kevin Durant - $4,796,880
Russell Westbrook - $3,755,640
Jeff Green - $3,516,960
Chucky Atkins - $3,480,000
Damien Wilkins - $3,300,000
Thabo Sefolosha - $2,759,627
DJ White - $1,036,440
Kyle Weaver - $870,968
TOTALS: $41,766,515

Re: Offseason Gameplan
What we look for via trade or free agency in the offseason largely depends on who we end up with in the draft.
Without adding anyone, our team looks like this for next year
PG: Westbrook/Watson/Atkins
SG: Thabo/Weaver
SF: Durant/Wilkins
PF: Green/DJ White
C: Krstic/Collison
Obviously Griffin is the best player in the draft and would be a lock to take with the first pick, however getting Monroe, or Thabeet wouldn't be awful either. If we take a big, I could see us going for Ben Gordon this summer. If we take Harden or Rubio, I see us trading for a big (*cough* Chandler *cough*).
Something like this looks to give us a pretty good team, with lots of depth
PG: Westbrook/Watson
SG: Gordon/Weaver
SF: Durant/ Thabo
PF: Green/Griffin
C: Krstic/Collison

I think we have good enough firepower from Durant Green Westbrook.
No need for Gordon, he would take shots away from durant and not play defense.

I am really skeptical on the amount that Gordon is going to want
I hope Harden is a no go
Rubio is apparently not coming this year

Re: Offseason Gameplan
Personally I don't like Gordon's price tag. At least for this team.
Harden is a nice college player and he should do well in the league but you can always find an available SG in what ever variety you need, either in the draft or free agency.
Centers are always the hardest position to fill.
I know I have said this about a million times but give me Thabeet.
A two headed monster of Thabeet/Krystic would really compliment each other well. Plus Thabeet can come off the bench to go up against other back up centers to get his confidence rolling.
So draft Thabeet then I'd draft a SG who can flat out fill it up. Even if it's a tweener Eddie House kind of guy or should I say a poor man's Ben Gordon.
A SG who doesn't mind coming in off the bench because he knows when he is in the game he has the green light to shoot, shoot, and shoot some more.
Second round I'd draft Pargo. He can play D has a solid build, good speed and quickness not to mention his hops. Plus he should be able to maintain the game while Westbrook is getting a breather.
I have to say I love the back court "potential" of Westbrook and Weaver they compliment each other perfectly.
Both play "D"
Westbrook electric and erratic (At this point possibly tries to do too much?)
Weaver composed, and plays within himself (Maybe doesn't try to do enough?)
Westbrook is a SG in a PG's body
Weaver is more of a PG in a SG's body
Both need time to mature, and both need to work on their jumper.
If Weaver can keep hitting the long ball there will be no need to go find a "starting" SG.
PG Westbrook, Pargo
SG Weaver, SHOOTER
SF Durant, Thabo
PF Green, Collison, White
C Krstic, Thabeet

Re: Offseason Gameplan
Few thoughts...
-Atkins will be gone because of his partially-guaranteed deal... I believe that if they waive him, they'll save 2.5-3 mil... no reason to pay that much extra for a guy that isn't helping the team in the long-run.
-I really hope that Watson isn't here next season. I know we need a backup PG, and he was helpful to bring Westbrook along slowly, but he's just painful to watch these days.
-Wiff, I really like the lineup you threw out there, the only hopes that I would have is that we can find a good enough fit with Thabeet and "SHOOTER" that they can start over Weaver and Krstic. I like both of those guys, but I just don't know that a team can make the playoffs in the West with both of them starting.
-Don't know if Pargo is the guy at the point or not (not disagreeing, just don't know). Whoever it is, it just needs to not be Atkins or Weaver

Any interest instead of Pargo how about Mills from St. Mary's with the first?
Wiff I know the zags are your team but Mills is a great player
Pargo - 9.7ppg 3.6rpg 5.0apg
Mills - 18.7ppg 2.5rpg 3.9apg
For the 2nd round anybody out there ever seen or heard of Mike Rose from Eastern Kentucky?
Senior
6'4" 195lbs
20.2 ppg
47.7FG% 48.7 3pt%
5.4rpg

Re: Offseason Gameplan
Is Mills a senior? I thought he was only a junior? But yeah I saw him absolutely torch the Zags this season for a half and then got hurt. St. Mary's would have blown out the Zags if he wouldn't have hurt his hand.
Mill's is not very big but the guy can stroke it. Who knows maybe he's be the back up point and the shooter?
But I think Pargo will be there in the "second" round. He'd be on the cheap. I think with the late first pick they could land themselves a decent shooter/scorer.
See Wiz I view Weaver kind of like a Reggie Evans when the Sonics won 52 games.
Evans started because he did all the dirty work, and with Ray Allen and Rashard Lewis on the floor there were only so many looks to go around. Someone needs to rebound and kick it back out to them for the 3 ball. A guy who doesn't mind letting the two big guns go off so they can get rolling
Then Nate would bring in Vladi Radmanovic (when he was still decent) to give a scoring boost off the bench. Vladi would end up with "starter" minutes. But Reggie still started.
To me I don't need 5 guys who can score to start. I like a blend of offensive and defensive guys.
This isn't the best example but kind of like when Isiah Thomas and Joe Dumars were in the back court for the Pistons they would bring in Vinnie "The Microwave" Johnson because he could heat up quickly.
I'd like that to be the shooter.
I'd like for Thabeet to start too, but I'd probably bring him in off the bench for the first couple months so he can get his feet wet. And have a chance to go up against lesser players.
Now if the kid comes in and dominates then sure give him the starting job. But with the past history of Centers with this team I'm just not expecting total dominance from a young center. But it would be nice.

Re: Offseason Gameplan
I definitely see the need for those role players, but if we had to pick a guy to start at the 2 and be that "dirty work" kind of guy, I think that would be more Thabo's role. From what I've seen thus far, he's the better one at guarding guys like Lebron, Kobe, etc. Weaver is a good defender, but more in a team sense. At this point, if you want to put one of our players into the Bruce Bowen role, I just think that Thabo is closer to it. The offseason will be very telling though... will it be Weaver bulking up and getting confidence or Thabo improving his jump shot?
With Thabeet, I agree. I was just saying it would be ideal if he could come in and start. His game fits on a winning team next to Durant and Green much better than Krstic's does. Krstic and Collison can be a great backup frontcourt tandem with Collison's rebounding/hustle and Krstic's jumper.
Ultimately, I'm just excited to see what happens. I'm hoping they don't trade away any of the core guys and just improve much in the way you've highlighted, wiff.

Re: Offseason Gameplan
Clipp Fan here have you guys considered drafting Tyler Hansbourgh (sp.) with your second rounder, he would give some what of a media draw while adding depth to your PF spot off he bench. Having a PF/C Depth at
Jeff/Nick/Tyler
Thab/Kristic
Then package the rest of your bigs for a solid PG backup. I honestly feel you guys starting line-up at the key upgrade spots SG and C should look one spot vet and the other top level rookie. You guys would be dangerous with a vet in the starting 5 line-up that helps the team manage games like Billups has done for the Nuggets this season.

Re: Offseason Gameplan
How about moving one of our expiring contracts for Martell Wwebster? OKC wouldnt have to draft a sg then, and he's a great shooter.
Westbrook/pick (second #1)
Webster/Weaver
Durant/Thabo
Green/White
Thabeet/Nenad

Is expiring good enough?
I dont think so
I would throw in a first round pick too if it works

Re: Offseason Gameplan
They'd probably want that. You'd get lottery talent for your expirer and late 1st. Perfect imo.
I posted the idea here:
viewtopic.php?f=28&t=887738&p=18827408#p18827408
Someone replied with a 4.5mil trade tpe and a 1st round pick. Would look good for okc too, but I dont know if its possible.
Could okc swing Wilkins & Watson for a nice player when some teams look for caproom in '10?
Westbrook/???
Webster/Weaver
Durant/Thabo
Green/Collison/White
Thabeet/Krstic

Re: Offseason Gameplan
yea I read his profile on Draft express.
Seems like he is a good fit OFF the bench, while he can be the focal point of offense and take as many shots as he wants/needs. We have a nice balance of D and Offense then, both starter 5 and bench players.

Re: Offseason Gameplan
I know Martell Webster is a kid from Seattle but oddly enough he is the only guy who I don't like. And I'll be honest I haven't seen a ton of him but, from what I have seen I didn't like.
Last year I went to a Blazers vs Sonics game and Webster's attitude sucks.
He was running up the right sideline on a break with his hand up and Jared Jack didn't get him the rock and the guy practically threw a hissy fit.
And after every call he pouted.
Plus he is more of a SF than a SG. And he has some injury issues. Sure if you can get him on the cheap why not. But I'd rather have someone else.
The kid does have decent range, I just hate cheering for whiners.
