1/4 way through the season

Post#1 » by slick_watts » Sun Dec 13, 2009 3:31 am

So 21 games are done already and I there's definitely a lot to be happy about. I don't think anyone would have expected this team to be 12-9 at this point.

The defense has been astounding. When I was doing my roster analysis earlier in the offseason, I thought that Scottie Brooks would have this team playing better defensively; mostly a product of a full training camp and preseason. Nobody could have expected this type of turnaround. Last season this team finished 20th out of 30 teams in defensive rating. This year we are fourth. The roster hasn't changed much, and I'm not sure how much of this is a credit to Brooks and how much is an indication of PJ Carlesimo's crappiness.

To put this into perspective, the Seattle Sonics hadn't finished in the top half of the league in defensive rating since 1998, George Karl's final season coaching the team. The franchise has been in the bottom third of the league all but two of the last ten years. We're starting to see some indication of what Sam Presti had in mind: a long, rangy, versatile team that can be ultra disruptive on defense. And this is without any inside presence.

Other than the defense:

- Kevin Durant's 3pt% is down but he's scoring at about the same efficiency as last season thanks to free throw shooting. He's increased his production in other areas, pretty much every area. He's even starting to block shots regularly. I expected KD to regress a bit this year .. :)

- Russell Westbrook is fairly close to what I had him pegged for in the offseason. His A:TO ratio is 1.87 or so, which is a decent improvement. I hope he can get it up to 2:1 which would make this season a success for him IMO. He started off the year shooting well but has tailed off. He's much more efficient on inside attempts; but he's shooting a lot more jump shots (which he is equally [in]efficient at this year). Russ should be using his abilities much like Tony Parker uses his.. get to the rim and make plays. It's been mixed but at least he's shown tangible improvement. He's been very uneven on defense.

- Jeff Green hasn't filled into the PF spot as a lot of us hoped he would. He's been mostly underwhelming, and has regressed in some areas. Most notably his three point shot. Unlike KD, he isn't making up for that in other areas and his scoring efficiency is not good for his position. Very weak on the boards. His defense has been OK I think, especially when he's not at a huge size disadvantage.

- Nenad Krstic has also been a mixed bag. He's working the pick and pop game well with Russ and when his shot is good he's a real asset.

- James Harden has also been mixed for me. I like his skill set and think he's going to be fine, but he's been fairly inconsistent with his shooting.

What do you guys expect the next quarter of the year? Will Presti make a move at the deadline, will we remain at or above .500 through the next tough portion of the schedule?

We are better than I thought we would be by a long shot. I knew our defense would improve but not by this much. It's especially impressive considering we have no post presence like you said. Our offense is still a work in progress, and I expect it to be that way until Westbrick(still love ya :D ) figures out how to run the team and make smart sound decisions. Also more Harden would help the offense as well.

Westbrook - playing horribly defensively, and not giving great effort night in and night out. Also is not a very smart player but is aggressive, and hopefully he figures it out because if he DOES figure it out holy crap this team will be fun to watch and it would mean we are an elite team.

Sefolosha - What needs to be said about him? He is our Bruce Bowen without the 3 point shot. Still great to have because of his incredible defense and unselfish nature about him. He is all TEAM first mentality. Great great team defender, and 1v1 defender. Solid passer as well.

Durant - Has exceeded my expectations for him this season. I never thought he could be this good defensively this early in his career. He still is too out of control on offense, but that will improve with time. he is even becoming more unselfish which is a great sign. His leadership has also been great. If he keeps improving he is going to be a TOP 2 player in this league right behind LeBron.

Green - Very underwhelming so far. His defense has been pretty good but inconsistent. and his offense has been pretty brutal. I wouldn't mind if Ibaka or White develops enough to take his spot and move him to the bench. Green would be a great 6th man.

Harden - Great mind on offense. He has a solid shot and will get better finishing around the bucket with more experience(Westbrook). Is going to be our own Manu Ginobili. His defense has been solid as well. He plays physical and is pretty good positionally. He even gets a lot of steals. I think he comes off the bench for the rest of the year IMO.

Those are our core players. I really like the development of all of them except Green.

Green and a 1st for Aldrich please :D

Love:

- The D, of course. Internal improvement, due to the growth of our players, the full training camp, a new state of mind (best symbol is Thabo) make us one of the best perimeter D in the league. Really pleased with Coach on that aspect.

-KD, of course. He's as good as anyone not named Kobe,LeBron or Dwight IMO, and it's just great to see him learning and improving day after day. Effort on D, focus on getting to the line, more passing game, good rebounder, LOADS of improvement.

-Thabo. He know his role, he doesn't try to do too much, he's basically spot up 3 and D, and he does that very, very well.

-Harden. I know people may disagree with me on that one, but he's the type of player I like. Very fundamentally sound, cautious, team-first. I hated that coach didn't play him too much at the start of the year, but he's giving him a tight rope I think, and he's starting to play more and better. Should be a good and important player for us for numerous years. I think in 2 years, if we don't have a big signing/draft pick/trade, he's our second option, and that he'll do that VERY well.

Torn:
-Westbrook.You never know what you gonna get, the smart play or the stupid pass, the good D or the bad hasty shoot. He's way too much inconsistant for me. As a coach,I'm very hard on my PG ( play pg myself) and so every time I see him playing I see so many dumb mistakes, times lost, heatchek shoots, selfishness, not doing nothing on D.. But on the other hand, he's improved on taking care of the ball, he's a freak and does defend ( just doesn't do it regularly), he's a better finisher than before. I like him ,and like I said numerous times, I don't think we put him in good positions to score, which make him force some bad shoots; he'll improve, IMO he'll always be a combo guard, that's why I want Harden to be our SG starter at the end of the year, to balance the thing.

-Our offence. Honnestly, it's better than it was by a huge margin. I just wonder how much of that is due to natural improvement of KD and RW, and the presence of Kirstic, which is huge on O. I mean, our offensive sets are somehow too predictable. Some falls on RW's shoulders, like I said, ( and some on KD, and more on Green's - see later), but still, sometimes I'm scratching my head at some of our offensive strategies. To sum it up, not nearly enough cutting, or cutting too late in the possessions, not enough ball movement, not enough posting of Green ( 50 % is his fault, 50 % is others factors IMO), posting of Ethan Thomas/ Nick collison (WTF????), Durant and Westbrook way too static when they don't get the ball, not nearly enough pick & roll with KD or Green ( KD as the screener or ball holder; Green as the screener) -and pick and pop for the same occasion... last point, I like very much how we work for KD. I hate how we work for Green and Russell.

Dislike:
- Jeff, of course.
I liked the guy a lof, liked his potential and atletic possibilities. Right now, he's more of a decoy than anything , because defense collapse on him and that opens the lanes. But otherwise, he's not attacking the paint very well, he's shooting badly, not improved as a passer or rebounder, and he tries on D but has limitations as a PF.
He needs a change of scenario or a new C.
But like I said, sometimes it seems like he's not considered on O, by KD and RW.
He doesn't post enough and shoot too many 3. I really don't know what way he could turn the corner..except than maybe bringing him off the bench as an energy player/scorer, but that gives us a ton of questions.

Still, very proud of this team. And I freakin love this board too ;)

Ehh. Too many mistakes, obviously has a lot of potential on defense, but has a ways to go before he can be counted on with regular (15mpg+) minutes.

He's been horrible on offense. He has an eFG% of .391 on inside attempts; his jumper looks nice but we don't need another jump shooting big man.

Still don't see him as more than a rotation player / defensive specialist. Like Chris Andersen, maybe.

I agree with Julio that the offense has been very uneven. There are some possessions where you just have to scratch your head.

Come on, I write that one hour thing on the team , and you agree with me on only ONE thing??

Ibaka is a good spark, but wow, does he need to work on about everything as far as offense is concerned

I think I'm a bit higher on Westbrook and lower on Harden. Westbrook's come pretty close to meeting the expectations I had for him already, but all your criticisms are correct. It's about consistency with him.

On Harden, I don't like how mechanical he looks creating offense. He got embarassed a few times at the rim against Memphis because he was predictable and .. well, kind of slow. I like his skill set and think his ability to handle the ball could make him valuable to the team in a Brent Barry kind of way (spot up shooter, run the offense, opportunistic scorer) and agree that his defense has been pretty good.

I sure hope he'll become more than just a spot-up or opportunistic scorer.
He should be able to exploit the lesser attention he got to score 1 on 1, and I could envision him being more than a "run the offense" guy. Like a "creating plays" type of guy, if that makes any sense at all.

I know what you're getting at. I hope he gets to that point, too, which is more of a Manu Ginobili kind of scorer. I'm just not sure that's what would best serve this team. Comparing James Harden to Brent Barry isn't a slight on Harden, Barry had a couple excellent years in Seattle he even lead the league in TS% and Offensive Rating one year.

The good part about James Harden is that unlike Westbrook you don't really expect his FG% to remain in the low 40's. I would be shocked if that continued. And he does other things so well for a SG already (create offense for others, DrawF [kind of], rebound) that it's a good sign.

Agreed with pretty much everything, and hell yeah, I would for him to be a Manu kind of guy.
Altough Manu sometimes go crazy on passes or shoots, I'm not sure I view Harden becoming that.

But yeah, I'm high on this kid.
I really don't think we could have gotten better in this draft.
That's also part of my regrets with Russel..
Just think of us with either Noah or Lopez right now, it's killing me..
