Chesapeake Energy Arena Rafters

Post#1 » by JazzMatt13 » Tue Dec 24, 2013 9:36 pm

I was asking around but no one knew or never responded. But did Thunder bring all the retired jerseys from Seattle with them, or any hanging banners for any titles they may have won,?

I was asking because there was a couple of guys I know who got their jerseys retired with Sonics, like Lenny Wilkins, Jack Sikma, and Nate McMillian. Nobody answered me about where their retired jerseys are, so I thought I would check with people who have been in CNA!

I am curious because, I was wondering if Thunder brought that with them, or if they figured Sonics would find a new team to bring back to Seattle so they would handle that kind of stuff?!

There are is nothing from the Sonics in the CHK arena. They in no way acknowledge the Sonics, anywhere.

The ownership group owns the Sonic name and all associated memorablia , etc. and will either give/sell it to a team in Seattle, if that day ever happens.

I'm pretty sure the physical banners and jerseys are all locked up somewhere in Seattle.

Bennett said he and Seattle Mayor Greg Nickels signed a binding agreement Wednesday, which would be formalized later, that keeps the SuperSonics' name, logo and colors available if Seattle gets a replacement franchise. Bennett said his franchise would create duplicate championship banners and trophies, leaving one set in Seattle and using the second set for undetermined purposes in Oklahoma City.

So "leaving 41 years of history", literally means clean slate, and anything done in Seattle was by definition "done by another franchise". That makes sense to me, they just sell back any rights they own to Sonics name.

But with dudes post, so then why didn't Perkins wear number 43? I guess it was still kind of early on in the transition.

I do know that when broadcasters refer to "franchise history" they're also including the Seattle days. So I do believe that the OKC Thunder own the history. I seem to recall reading an argument made in court that the history represented a significant portion of the franchise's value.

I don't know of a single Thunder fan in Oklahoma City, that wants anything from the Sonics, either the record book or the team colors, nothing. We want to start fresh here.

I'm sure our ownership group feels the same way.

I agree with the first part of that... to the point that it feels awkward when the talk about franchise records that didn't happen in OKC.

As far as the second part... the ownership group was certainly arguing the opposite. So, either they care or they were just not wanting to "give something away for nothing".
