There's no way we ditch DJ before seeing Payne for a full season.
This is definitely a direction they will be going though. We will see Cam getting 15-18mpg as a quick development over his first year so we can get rid of DJs contract.

It will be interesting to see how Billy manages minutes. Brooks wouldn't play Payne until injuries or trades forced his hand. If Payne gets the minutes over DJ, I think he will be the better back-up by season end. That would definitely be my preference. I would keep DJ until January at least. Even if he's not playing he's a veteran presence, possibly friends with KD, a good career shooter and game manager on a reasonable contract.

DJ is weak defensively and very limited on the offensive PnR. This is a size issue but hey with the dollars being thrown around he is a cheap place holder for Payne

This is in no way a cut on Payne, just my 2 cents, but after missing SL, I would keep him with the big club through preseason and then swing him to D-League for a month to work on everything and keep him sharp and then reevaluate. It would help him transition wise as well.
