slicedbread2 wrote:OKC has some massive trade exceptions in play that can be used along with their cap space to take advantage of teams looking for cap relief. They could use it to get more picks for the future or to move up. A few teams come in mind:
1) Boston. I'm sure they're looking to move Thompson after the draft. If OKC can get 3 2nds the way Philly paid 3 2nds to ultimately acquire Hill(2 to OKC, 1 to NY), I'm sure Stevens will pay the price. This would allow them to get a $9.7M TPE to fill out the roster as they see fit and I'm sure they'll cut Jabari Parker to make space to resign Fournier and stay under the tax.
2) Indiana. They have the 13th pick, but could be willing to move down in the draft provided someone is willing to eat Lamb's deal. He's been injury prone and just hasn't been able to stay healthy(missed 73 games over 2 years). Getting cap relief would be a priority for them.
3) New Orleans. I'm sure Griffin is having buyer's remorse over the botched Jrue Holiday deal as he could've used him to be moved for a better fitting package such as trading for Myles Turner prior to last year. He's probably trying to move Bledsoe's deal and perhaps even Adams and Iwundu's deals in order to get more cap space and leverage to work with when it comes to deciding whether or not to resign Lonzo Ball and Josh Hart's deals. If OKC can get #10 while eating Adams+Bled and Iwundu's deals while only sending out a few non-guaranteed deals and some 2nds, it's worth looking into.
4) Cleveland. They have the #3 pick, but the Kevin Love situation has been a problem for them and I'm sure if they could get cap relief for his deal along with Osman's it's worth looking into.
With that said here's what I'd try to do:
1) Make the deals for #1-#3 in the following package:
Boston: 1M cash from OKC, 9.7M trade exception
Indiana: #18, a 2nd in this year's draft from OKC, 10.5M trade exception
New Orleans: some non-guaranteed deals/low level prospects, 2nds from OKC
OKC: Steven Adams, Eric Bledsoe(via Steven Adams TPE), Wesley Iwundu+Jeremy Lamb(Trevor Ariza TPE), Tristan Thompson(Gallo TPE), #10, #13, future 2nds from Boston(2-3)
I tried this deal and sent out someone like Isaiah Roby. You could send out Charlie Brown Jr. instead, but due to him being recently signed, he can't be moved until August 13. In this deal you get the following accomplished:
-Boston clears the logjam in the front court and they get more cap space to work with to potentially resign Fournier. They also get a 9.7M trade exception to fill out the roster as they see fit and if they manage to resign Fournier to a short term deal while bringing over Yam Madar from Israel to be their backup point guard if it works out.
-Indiana slides down in the draft, but get an extra 2nd in this year's draft to fill out the roster and get out of Lamb's deal
-New Orleans saves over $37M in salary alone and they'll save an additional $22M in future salary owed to Bledsoe and Adams. The Pelicans will get some 2nds to fill out their roster with the 2nds they already have. This also allows them the opportunity to open up playing time for Lewis Jr. and Hayes not to mention it gives them leverage in any S&T for Lonzo Ball if they choose not to keep him plus Josh Hart.
-OKC uses up the majority of Gallo and Ariza's TPE, but they still have Adams's TPE in play with 9.4M after absorbing Bled's deal. Other than Adams, everybody is expiring and Adams is a good vet presence who can mentor the young guys plus they move up in the draft and consolidate some of their 2nds plus cap space to get an additional 1st.
2). Usually you have to wait 30 days before making another trade. If possible, consider consolidating the pieces in scenario 1 to try and move up in the draft with Cleveland with the following trade after the draft is done if possible:
Cleveland: Eric Bledsoe, Jeremy Lamb, Tristan Thompson, Wesley Iwundu, #6, maybe #16 or couple future 2nds.
Oklahoma City: Kevin Love, Cedi Osman(acquired via $9.4M Adams TPE), #3
-Cleveland gets out of Love and Osman's deals. Osman's 23-24 salary is not guaranteed so his deal would expire at the same time as Adams, Love, and Walker's deals. They will save about $32.5M in salary including Bled's final year which is partially guaranteed for $3.9M. Yes they take a bit of downer by moving down in the draft, but they may be willing to do so in order to get out of Love's deal and to open up cap space to pay Allen.
-OKC takes some short term pain with these deals but get to move up to #3 if Cleveland is that desperate to move on from him. Osman had a really brutal season last year, but I think he can bounce back and OKC could eventually flip him to a contender as his deal and contract is desirable for a contender looking for a team friendly deal. Love may show some motivation to try and get going, but in the event it doesn't work out and nobody wants him they could buy him out. The other positive is the team will be under the luxury tax when adding up all these deals for 21-22 and all these deals expire when the 1st year of SGA's extension kicks in.
It's a lot of wishful thinking, but if they can't get the Cleveland scenario to happen, I'd consider simply doing the 1st scenario with Boston, Indiana and New Orleans just to capitalize while you can.

These are all great ideas, but I’m guessing it costs more to get Cavs to budge and move the 3rd pick.
I think you’d have to be willing to go 6, 16, and Suns 2022 1st or Denver 2023 1st for Love and 3 just to get the conversation started. And then the Cavs probably want more. Unless you get a desperate front office and can fleece them like the Thunder did the Magic in the Ibaka deal
I like the Pelicans idea even if it means Bledsoe has to actually put on a Thunder uniform, but I think Pelicans should be looking to use Adams and Bledsoe salary to match salary in a bigger win now move with all their assets.
Indy sounds nice, and I think obtainable, but at some point they will need to have the discussion about a reset, so keeping Lamb and letting McBuckets and McConnell walk could be the play to keep pick 13.
