Westbrook Question

Post#1 » by Blazing_royale » Fri Dec 17, 2010 12:12 am

as a Raptor fan here i come in peace and enjoy watching your young nucleus like Durant/Westbrook doing there thang. I just got a question for you guys. When you guys drafted Westbrook, knowing he wasn't truly a point guard how did you guys feel after his first year? cuz he did average 3.3 TOPG and 5.3 apg, not that astonishing and not quite a true point guard. Did he show glimpse of being a point guard or he just improved out of nowhere in his second season?

Right now our Raptors fan are bashing Bayless, who has done an awesome job but because his apg and topg has looked like a combo guard. We're all assuming he'll never be better than a 6th man guard who can penetrate in the paint at will and just score.

It's a good question. RW always had decent court vision and there were flashes of him being a legitimate PG in his rookie year despite the high turnovers and relatively low assists. You're right, though. There were still a lot of questions about whether or not he was a true PG after the rookie year and a lot of people wanted us to draft Rubio.

What he's done to improve his game the last couple seasons isn't very typical. I think it has a lot to do with how raw he was as a prospect, i.e. never having played PG much before. The Thunder more or less got a blank slate to work with and the work he's done with Maurice Cheeks has supposedly helped him out. He's still not really what you would call a traditional PG but he does so many other things it doesn't matter.

My personal feelings were that he was better than Ridnour, Watson and anyone we had at PG since GP.
His offensive rebounding was a real highlight that first year. As far as ass/to goes though we did have a few questions, however alot of his turns were caused by our bigs not catching some good passess he was throwing off drives and offensive fouls. Both of which I felt like were "good" turnovers for a young player to be having as it meant he was being agressive. I felt like the number was inflated. I never wanted him at the 2 though I will say that.

Definitely knew he was a good player, just not entirely sure he was a good point guard.

I still wanted to keep him at point guard though and give him a shot, but at the same time I thought Rubio was too good of a prospect to pass up. I felt like Westbrook could really learn the point guard position, but that if it didn't work out, he could be a good shooting guard as well.

he'd be an undersize shooting-guard and still a lack of jumpshot?
