Russell Westbrook a Restricted Free Agent in 2012 Offseason

Post#1 » by Loudconcepts » Fri Dec 30, 2011 2:53 pm

The new CBA luxury tax penalties start in 2014 the same year Ibaka and Harden becomes Restricted Free Agents (unless they sign extensions)
If Westbrook hits the free agent market , teams like the Kings , Nets , and Wizards won't hesitate to offer the Max to a player like Westbrook. If the Thunder match they can't afford to keep Ibaka and Harden the next year.
Ibaka one of the best defensive big men in the league is a must keep since big men weren't easy to replace. Harden is Durants best friend they hang out all the time record music together and to keep Durant happy you have to keep Harden
Presti clearly has already started looking for a replacement for Westbrook thats why he drafted Reggie Jackson.
Should the thunder trade Westbrook now or let him walk for nothing

Im aware that a lot of Thunder fans want to keep Westbrook, but I think you made a good valid point here and as we all know Sam Presti, he is always 1 or 2 steps ahead.
I also think he knows already what to do with Westbrook, in my opinion we should trade him for a 2-3 player package, to avoid big salaries.

Btw, also David Stern has commented on this the other day, look it up if you havent read it yet.
He pretty much said, that the Thunder wont be and shouldnt be able to keep "all of their stars".

Yea I peeped what stern said, right now westbrook salary is like 5.5 mil. They can't afford to keep him next year because hes gonna get a max 13 mil deal. Which is a lil less than what Ibaka and Harden will get two years from now combined. Westbrook can be traded for draft picks but his salary right now won't bring in multiple players unless they sign and trade him in the off season but I dont recommend that. My solution is trade for Rondo right now get avery bradley and a first round pick

Trading for Rondo would not solve this problem.
Rondo is on a five-year, 55million contract I believe, that he signed in Nov 2009, so he has 3 more years.
Thats a pretty high salary too, so I dont see how that would work.

2013 2014
Rondo 10 mil 10 mil
Harden 5 mil 9 mil
Durant 13 mil 14 mil
Ibaka 1 mil 10 mil
Perks 7 mil 7 mil
Collison 3 mil 3
Thabo 3 mil 3
Bradley 1 mil 1
Nazr 1 mil 1

Add an extra 2 mil to both because I rounded the numbers and trade for jared dudley add scoring to the bench thats an extra 5 mil
Alrdich 1 mil

The new CBA sucks so badly. So now the answer of Stern when a team like OKC in a small market drafts well and has 4 great young players coming off of rookie deals is "trade some of them" ??? are you kidding me?

You guys might be right OKC might have to trade Westbrook. I think they would have to trade by the trade deadline for one reason. In the NBA you have to match salary and I'm thinking OKC doesn't want to take on a large salary so they will not be open to a sign and trade deal for Westbrook after this season taking on a bad contract. So they have to move him. A player like Rondo who contract is not bad and he is under control for 3 mores seasons is the type of player OKC should be looking at. The only thing is OKC is going to have to get another scorer in any trade for Westbrook.

Another thought would be trade Wesbrook and KP to Orlando for Dwight Howard.

You've been treading a fine line between trolling and bringing legit basketball discussion on this topic. Let's not go over that line.

That was a true statement, he gets a bonus for playing I'm a major city......like LA, Dallas, and NY

OKC is smaller than my city and the most we got is a triple AAA baseball team , and a minor league football team

I know dwight wouldn't play or live in oklahoma

Haha oklahoma

trade westbrook ASAP... and to be hones it has nothing to do with his contract...horrible fit with durant.

athletic freak, but u dont need a point guard with a big ego, doin personal battles with opp. point guards, when u have prolly the best scorer in basketball history on your team.

interesting players.. rondo, steph curry (see how his anklesituation works out, althoug westbrook is just another monta ellis so far), maybe deron williams and snatch a firstrounder when the nets get despered at the deadline.. the problem is, russel is hurting his value by playing so dumb, by himself.
im bout dat action boss

I don't see why OKC would trade Westbrook from an outsiders perspective.

If you trade him for a more talented piece, your likely going to be in the same financial dilemma. Trading for a downgrade when your going to end up paying 2-4 mil less, isn't worth it in my books (which is what? another bench player?).

Presti is smart, and he shouldn't let other GM's take credit for his hard work. OKC should trust that their owners are willing to keep the group together (and pay a small tax, while losing depth).

The key for Presti is going to be signing Harden/Ibaka to extensions lower then what they would recieve on the market before FA or the deadline for pending FA to sign extensions. Similarly to how Celtics got Rondo on a very good deal.

Add the Suns to the list that are going to throw the max at Westbrooks in the offseason.

Like many teams, the Suns are going to have cap space next offseason. Plus the Suns organization have a history of going after Point guards ( KJ, Kidd, Marbury and Nash)

Lol RW is not going to sign with a team that's not going any were. No disrespect to your team but I'm just saying, he won't sign a max contract with your team.

why not sign Westbrook to the max in the offseason and look to deal him later for a package of a cheaper starting PG, some youth, and some expirings?

KD - $15M
RW - $13M
JH - $10M
SI - $10M
KP - $7M

that's your starters, and biggest difference makers, all signed for under $60M. luxury tax kicks in at what, $70M? seems like you guys would still have a fair bit of room to play anyways, especially since Presti does such a good job of signing players to affordable, and sensible contracts.

I never said that RW was going to sign it. Personally, I hope they wait until the offseason in 2013 and they go after Harden. IMO, Harden is a more complete player.
