Tibor Pleiss will leave team in Germany; next stop OKC?
Royce YoungJune 11th, 2012Go to commentsLeave a comment
Via Sportando, seven-footer Tibor Pleiss will likely leave his German team Brose Baskets Bamberg. And according to Andrea Burkert of Süddeutsche Zeitung he will join the Thunder.
Obviously that’s very difficult to confirm, but it makes some sense. Nazr Mohammed’s contract is expiring this offseason and Pleiss could potentially step in and fill that role. Or at least try and make an impression during Summer League.
Pleiss was picked 31st overall by the Nets in the 2010 draft and was traded to the Hawks who then sold his rights to the Thunder. Pleiss averaged 6.5 ppg and 5.3 rpg in Euroleague and 10.1 ppg and 6.0 rpg in Bundesliga.

- It's a Spanish team.
- German media suggests that the contract would be annuled should he receive a call from OKC.

This is good news. Pleiss will play in ACB league which is better competition for him, probably better than D-League. We'll at least have a good idea where he stands and he will have an NBA opt out clause no doubt.

Yes, the Spanish League is way better than the German League. It's also way better than the D-League, not even a debate.
However, the German League is also way better than the D-League. The D-League is far below the decent and good European leagues.

Tibor is the starting center at Laboral now. He's doing pretty well, two times player of the week, 12,3 PPG, 5,3 RPG and 0,8 BPG in 19,8 MPG.
I'm hoping that there will be a center rotation of Adams and Pleiss @OKC in the future.

I'm from Germany, so please excuse that my English is a bit rusty.

He has had some pretty good games recently, and a league reporter on twitter quoted him as saying (through translation) I want to be in the NBA in 2014.
I'll try to find something more then my words
it was something I saw on DailyThunder in the last few days.

I can't open the above link but what I can see of it " rumbo a NBA en junio de 2014" NBA bound in June 2014.
With the front court being Ibaka, Perk, with Collison and Adams coming off the bench how does Pleiss work his way in? (I want him here...just trying to figure it out logically)
Would he leave his team currently to replace Thabeet??
Ibaka, Collison and Adams aren't going anywhere, not a great change Perk does either (though that amnesty word keeps getting floated).

I got it to work with Google translate. Not a perfect translation but basically he has a NBA opt out clause after this year and is putting up similar numbers to Splitter before he came over.
I think OKC ask him to wait one more year. Seems like a good bench option once Perkins expires and Adams starts. He will probably cost 4 mil per(pretty much what Pek and Spiltter got) and don't see OKC willing to pay that until Perkins is gone.

His game reminds me of Mozgov
I think he should not have to cost over 2.5 $ per season

Previous Euroleague centers have gotten bigger starting contracts than 2.5 mil. The minimum seems to be 3.5 mil. There is no reason to expect him to sign lower than that.
Oklahoma City is in no way a bigger market than some of the teams he likely to get offers from in Europe. In his own league, Madrid and Barcelona are both big market teams with lots of cash. Pretty much all of those two teams games are broadcast all over the world besides US, also.
If he doesn't come over before his current contract is up, I think theres a decent chance one of premier teams offers him a sizeable offer and he doesn't come over at all.

wouldnt he have to agree to the designated rookie scale?

I think because he took longer than 2 years he doesn't have to go rookie scale.

For 1st round picks if a team keeps the player's rights for 3 seasons after drafting him they can exceed rookie scale. As far as I know 2nd round picks don't really have set rules for their contract, length or salary wise, as long as it follows the other cba rules. Either way the 3rd seasons ends this year so OKC could offer as much as they could a free agent is my understanding.

Thanks for clearing that up. Wasnt sure how that rule worked.
I still have my doubts that the kid will ever come over.

Re: Tibor Pleiss
I wonder what his league wide value is, I'd say he has to be worth atleast a late 1st. He is top 10 in scoring in the 2nd best league in the world, and willing to come over next season. That graphic shows he compares favorably stats wise to Scola and Splitter when they were in the same league, and both have found success in the NBA. Spanish league bigs seem to be successful for the most part in the NBA.
