Thabeet possibly to thunder?

According to Sam Amick of SI.com:

First the Perry Jones “gamble,” now Hasheem Thabeet? Source says Oklahoma City is the most likely landing spot for the 7-3 center who was taken No. 2 by Memphis in 2009 and will be playing for his fourth team (assuming he doesn’t sign with Portland, Houston or the Griz).

Thabeet is an unrestricted free agent and likely wouldn’t command much of a deal. The Thunder have always been interested in taking a flyer on Thabeet, even coming close to working a deal for him a couple years ago while he was still in Memphis. The Thunder feel strongly that put in their program, Thabeet still has the tools to develop into something worthwhile.

There’s something to be said for a 7-3 guy that was taken second overall, especially when you’re talking a minimum level kind of contract for him likely to just practice and work. And in the Thunder culture based around development and growth, maybe Thabeet could finally realize a little of that talent he has. People are the league have told me that Thabeet isn’t a knucklehead. He just hasn’t had the kind of work ethic necessary to make it in the NBA.

It’s a very low risk, high reward kind of move. Thabeet wouldn’t cost much, and with veteran Nazr Mohammed a free agent, OKC either needs to re-sign him or will be in the market for a new backup, or third string big, assuming Cole Aldrich steps into the rotation.

Obviously with every penny spent, everyone wonders how this might impact the future of the roster, but you have to fill out a team. You have to make sure you have the right players to put on the floor. And again, the major salary concerns don’t necessarily hit until next season. If Aldrich is truly ready to become OKC’s backup center — and I think he is — then the Thunder need a third big. It could be Mohammed, who likely would be fine remaining in OKC, but Thabeet is opportunity to take a shot at developing something for the future.

Either Cole or him better be ready to play some playoff ball.

Let's see Lazar Hayward at the end of the bench or Thabeet? I'd rather take a chance on the 7"3" guy making a difference down the road.

As long as he come with a rock bottom price tag why not?

Worth taking a flyer on, I think. Cheap, young, and 7'3. Would rather have him on the end of the bench than Lazar Hayward.

Still think we should look into Camby see if hes interested.. vet presence plus a 7 footer to defend the paint and rebound at a high rate.

The problem here is Nazr actually can get buckets. He can knock down the 12 to 15-ft-er, and his hands are dependable. Small details make the difference.

Nazr is terrible.

At least we have seen him being terrible. Aldrich/Thabeet doesnt even get on the floor for meaningful minutes to be terrible.

In addition to being terrible, Nazr is old. We need a replacement, and the prospective addition of Thabeet is a step in that direction.

He visited the Thunder on Sunday. If he signs we need either him of Cole to give us good minutes. This will leave one roster spot if he signs. I would think the Thunder would be looking to add someone at the Vet Min. Perferbally a shooter who can push Cook, and play on the wing.

fortunately this question is moot. i don't believe an organization that has built themselves the way okc has would ever pay thabeet with real money. he has d-league skills. i'm assuming "taking a flyer" means they have excess cash they don't know what to do with?

It means they have to fill out a roster.

In 2008 Presti offered Robert Swift the qualifying offer on his rookie contract after missing most of the 2007-08 season due to an ACL injury. Swift went on to play 26 games averaging 3ppg, 3rpg & .89bpg in 13 average minutes.

In 2008-09 Presti also signed Nenad Krstic half way through the season. Krstic who suffered an knee injury in 2006-07 played 46 games and averaged 9.6ppg, 5.5rpg & 1.07bpg in 25 average minutes.

In 2010 Presti traded for Kendrick Perkins who had suffered an knee injury with Boston the previous season. Perkins played in played in 29 games and averaged 6.0ppg, 8.0rpg & .9bpg in 25.6 average minutes.

I suppose one of the best things that can be said about the free agent signing of Hasheem Thabeet is that he isn't coming off a major knee injury.

It's not too hard to understand Presti's interest in Thabeet, but how does the organization intend to develop him without the available playing time? Is Thabeet the biggest niche player in the NBA where his mere size is his only skill?

Found a video of Thabeet working with Yao Ming on the court. I wonder why he stop working with Yao you can tell he's getting a little better. He needs to keep on working with Yao, and he would be ok
