Backup PG

Post#1 » by TBOKED » Sun Jul 12, 2015 8:22 pm

I have mixed thoughts on this, curious what rest of board thinks.

DJ did well running the offense when he was on the floor. His defense was suspect, particularly against bigger PGs. He was a bit streaky with shot, but he did set floor and create for teammates.

That being said, while a vet, I don't believe he has playoff experience. I am tempted to say they should gamble on dealing him, and instead invest in the development of its two prospects, Cam and Semaj. The former is a first round pick, and the latter showed well in summer and d-league. I tend to think the Lamb situation could have turned out differently if he actually received consistent PT, and fighting for minutes at SG in OKC is much less difficult than earning time at PG since WB is at the helm. So let's not let a 1st and 2nd round pick rot on the bench or d-league. Let's see what they can do. Only way that happens is if DJ is gone. And that is another $3M if they can find a taker.

I am guessing this won't happen, at least not early, because they know what DJ can do.

Thoughts?

Nah, no way I'm trusting a rookie that soon, he hasn't played SL yet even. DJ is close with KD too so even a lesser chance I move him.

Except Kanter is signed longer. If KD leaves it actually matters. One guy is a franchise player, the other isn't.

Augustin is the backup PG. Payne will get playing time and will get to show what he can do and IF he steps up then he could take the backup job at some point. Payne is probably the backup PG in 2016-2017. He'll get playing time like McGary and Adams have the last two years, but he'll have to show something if he's going to get more than 10 minutes a night. I think Payne could end up as the starting PG with Russ moving to SG in 2016-2017.

Was kidding Bondom about Novak.

Because DJs contract only runs through this year, I think you have to figure out how to get Cam minutes this year, like 8-10 a game, preferably not all in garbage time. Assuming PGs are healthy, the only way you get close to that number with WB's heavy minutes is to see more 2 PG rotations a la WB and DJ combos we saw last year. This obviously takes minutes away from the deep but less talented SG spot. Don't you want to know before trade deadline whether you need to resign DJ,or you need to go out and get another backup PG, especially with WB contract up the following year?

For sure, and I'd agree, ultimately I'd cut Dion's minutes :D. Plus, the option is always there for 2 PG lineups with Cam alongside Russ or DJ. Robes is usually more a 15 mpg guy, Morrow a bit more, so hoping to see the 2 PG lineups as you said. BTW, welcome to the board!

Thanks for the welcome.

I am working on a "money making/get rid of Dion scheme". For example, create a "Trade Dion Waiters" website, we bid it up, then sell it for more than Waiters is worth, say a dollar or two.

Something, anything! I still have no clue what Presti saw in him, and I am for the most part an unapologetic Presti apologist.

Dude I'm with you as are a few of us. Kinda hoping Philly takes him, he's a hometown guy there at least.

I am not a fan of Dion, but I wouldn't be surprised if he had a career year this year. Total fool's gold, but Dion strikes me as a 'listen to the coaches in a contract year' guy. The talent is there. I wouldn't trade until at least January hoping that creates some value.

The RW-DJ lineups were not very good last year, not much better offensively and terrible defensively. DJ is considerably smaller than I thought. I have more hope that RW could play with Payne, even with DJ's perimeter shooting.
*****
I don't know what to make of Semaj. He's terrific...except shooting. Reggie at least converted at the rim at a high clip. The gulf between Semaj now and what he could be is just massive. It's certainly frustrating, he doesn't take a lot of inadvisable shots and his jumper doesn't appear broken, but he needs to make considerably more before I would consider extending a contract.

DJ could represent significant tax savings if Cameron Payne can play. I think Payne will get the opportunity to show what he can do. Augustin doesn't excite me much, especially since he appears to be a weak combination with Russ so far.

Semaj Christon is a non-entity to me as far as the NBA team goes.

Payne is the best young PG prospect I've ever seen.

A lot of Sixers fans on their board seem mildly interested in absorbing D.J. for some sort of incentive. They don't seem high in Isaiah Canaan running the show, brought in rookie Pierre Jackson and have half a Tony Wroten coming off injury.

What's fair value for D.J. to you OKC guys?

rights to:
Arturas Gudaitis
Luke Mitrovic (likely never play in NBA)
Vasilje Micic
Jordan McRae (currently in PHI Summer League)
Arsalan Kazemi (currently in PHI Summer League)

Can you re-acquire OKC 1st round pick that PHI owns atm? They got a helluva lotta picks to hand out.

Is D.J. worth a late first? a pair of seconds?

I don't think they'd give that much up, and I'd rather keep DJ. He's friends w/ KD so that's a factor for me, and Payne isn't ready.

Oh I didn't mean all of those just for D.J, just if any interested OKC. Seems one side is keen to give Payne playing time straight away, some seem intent to retain KD pals.

I don't think anyone's said Payne will be ready day 1, which is the issue, and I meant I don't think Philly gives a first for DJ. OKC wants to cut salary, but likely just Novak.
