Player prediction thread: PF

Ibaka: we've heard that Serge has shown the most improvement this offseason. I have no idea what that could mean. I doubt his hands, passing or post game got significantly better at this point in his career, so the only thing I could think would be he's shooting even better and gotten stronger. Unfortunately we've also heard he's already dealing with some knee soreness and I expect he misses 15+ games this season. He'll still be a great third banana, but I think the 'improvement' statement is smoke.

Mitch: it seems everyone expects him to be the backup PF this season, which puts me in the minority. I think he'll still be third string and look just as good hustling, rebounding and running the floor as he did last year, but Nick has one more season left in him.

Nick: After looking done for 3/4 of a season (and the previous playoffs) Nick came back strong down the stretch last year. I think he's finallyhealthy and his P&R defense is ultimately going to make him the backup one more year. His passing also gives him an advantage now that we have 3 point shooters throughout the roster, and McGary's offensive rebounding isn't as big of a bonus with Kanter providing the same thing.

Novak: some people will complain that's he's a SF, but this is where he got into the games last year. He'll only see the court in blowouts and when we HAVE to have a three. A lineup of DJ, Morrow, Durant, Novak, Ibaka could be fun to watch though, any team ever played 5 out none in?
“If you're getting stops and you're making threes and the other team's not scoring, that's when you're going to see a huge point difference there,” coach Billy Donovan said.

Serge will show the offensive balance he did at the end of last season between shooting and finishing—he was on a really nice stretch. Agree he'll probably miss a little time. I think Mitch and Nick will wind up splitting backup PF depending on matchups, with Nick getting the bulk of the minutes because I think Kanter comes off the bench and someone in that group has to play defense. Steve Novak rides the bench.

Serge will be healthy and back to his usual self, I do think Mitch takes over some of Collison's minutes and maybe nearly phases him toward the end of the bench.

They might try to increase his passing role. Not something you think of improving in summer in drills with staff but it might be a focus and it might make a difference. To date he has had very low assists.

Think McGary is backup. Collison might even be 4th string behind Novak

Nick's gone downhil a bit, but he's a mile better than Novak. Novak's barely an NBA player at this point.

Serge will be even better, more efficient, than ever. He'll provide the floor spacing needed when Roberson is out there which will take his man out of position for rebounding. This will allow the team to get a higher percentage of rebounds with Adams, Kanter, Roberson, Durant and Russ all generally better than the man they are going against in rebounding.

McGary will be solid for a 2nd year player, but he won't have anyone thinking he should be starting and he will have some injury that limits him to 65 games. Nick will be the reliable veteran and will only play around 45 regular season games which will leave him fresh for the playoffs when he could actually be needed against teams like the Clippers, Spurs and Grizzles to match their depth down low.
