Trade-Talk

I think it's time we had an internal Trade-Topic since I think we're bound to make additional moves this season.

I'm really liking this proposal by Chuck:

This is an underpay.

Aye. A more realistic offer from Dallas imo would look something like this(including the Bogut to Boston deal):

Matthews, Zeller, Anderson, protections removed from 2018 BOS 2nd to OKC
Bogut to Boston
Kanter, Payne, Singler, 2017 MIN 2nd to Dallas

OKC gets the veteran wing and believes Matthews shooting will improve, a backup center to replace Kanter, and a young wing with potential with 3 rookie years left and ensures they actually get a 2nd from Boston next year. And the structure on the Zeller deal is great for OKC because they can keep him if they want for next year or he's a nice little trade chip.

Boston getz Bogut

Dallas gets a couple younger pieces and eats Singler plus the decent 2nd from the Celtics

That would leave us with this rotation:

Russ/Christon/x
Oladipo/Abrines/Morrow
Roberson/Matthews/Anderson
Sabonis/Lauvergne/Grant/Collison
Adams/Zeller/x

The more I think about it, the more I think a guy like Matthews would be our best possible option. He was a solid shooter for the Mavs last season and - according to Chuck - a decent defender. He's lost a step or two because of his injury, but this might really be the best we could do.
I really like Anderson (he plays with a fire) and Zeller should be a solid backup. Too bad that this would leave us without a solid backup PG.

What do you guys think?

That would be the worst bench offense ever. Frankly, I don't trust Matthews to ever be an effective player again, and I say that a someone who really really likes him as a person and the player he used to be. I don't see a rain to move cam for a guy basically Vic's size before we see a Cam/Russ/Dipo lineup.

Am I alone in viewing Power Forward as our biggest weakness (arguably outside a general lack of shooting). Sabonis is promising but he's just a rookie and will have the attendant ups and downs. As far as Joffrey I'm not convinced he is even second string caliber for a playoff team.

I'm not sure they even have a second string caliber SF.

Adding a wing that can shoot and play defense is definitely a bigger concern. Ideally it's a 3 that can play some 4, but upgrading the 4 doesn't really do much on its own. Sabonis will continue to get better, and his skills fit exactly what Donovan wants from the position, plus it's going to be easier to find a 3&d wing upgrade.

Grant would be fine if we had any shooting, but I'd prefer him at the 4. We don't even have enough quality wings to play any small ball right now, which is disappointing since we have an abashing opportunity to play a switching and trapping style similar to LeBron's heat.

That's a solid point. Last year's performance was solid tho:

+1.3 single year RAPM (77th overeall)
+0.6 RPM (18th for SGs)
+0.5 BPM

The main issue with these trade ideas is this imo: What kind of player will we be able to get? Of course I would prefer to get Otto Porter, Crowder or Aminu, but I doubt we have enough assets to pull that off. If those kind of guys are off-the-table and we're not looking at guys that are best suited for 15 minutes off the bench, not a big role as a wing player, then we'll end up looking at Gay and Matthews. Older guys with clear deficiencies, but still good enough to warrant trading for them.

But yeah: Since I'm also skeptical about his health, age and contract, I wouldn't give up more than Kanter simply because the Mavs have no real leverage. They certainly don't want to keep Matthews if things continue the way they did during the first couple of games. He's not the same player on a big, big contract. You don't get a lottery pick on a great contract for that.

One positive thing about trading for a wing would be playing Robes more minutes at the 4.

Actually if it is going to be a value for value trade the OKC should ask for a player with his own day for Kanter.

Those kinda things matter you know.

If anyone sees a Paul George trade rumor floating around, it's decisively false. It's based on Inquisitr and Sportsrageous, which took it from 2 articles from Thunderous Intentions saying "we should trade our trash for Paul George!"

Lol inquisitr cites the same website that that guy on the trade board used when opening the Westbrook to the cavs thread. I'm almost certain these websites are using a content generator that pulls from articles around the web then posts click bait stories to generate ad revenue.

I trust them:

http://www.sportsrageous.com/rumors/nba-rumors-knicks-trading-kristaps-porzingis-for-anthony-davis-benching-from-hornacek-could-lead-to-blockbuster-deal/54803/

Via ESPN’s trade machine, an Anthony Davis for Derrick Rose and Kristapos Porzingis works under the NBA trade rules. The Pelicans may demand a future first round pick from New York and the Knicks would be willing since they will be getting Davis, one of the best players in the NBA.

I think an interesting PF upgrade option would be Zach Randolph. He's an expiring contract and Memphis isn't going anywhere. OKC has the room to fight in Randolph's contract so something like Lavergne for Randolph could work for both teams. Memphis would get a young big to learn from Gasol and OKC would get another post presence. It could be done and still leave OKC with Payne and Kanter as movable pieces for a better wing.

TBH a guy I like is still Gortat. I think Kanter for Gortat and a wing could be a nice pickup, and give Scotty B a familiar face in Washington. I'm torn on trading Enes because he's so darn nice but if he went there I'd feel like he's in good hands at least. I think a basis of:

OKC Out: Kanter/Huestis
In: Gortat/wing X

Washington Out: Gortat/something
In: Kanter

3rd team Out: Wing X
In: Huestis/something from Washington

Maybe?

OKC OUT: Kanter/Huestis
OKC IN: Gortat/Muhammad

WAS OUT: Gortat/Morris
WAS IN: Kanter/Bjelica

MIN OUT: Muhammad/Bjelica

Trade board? Not sure about Bazz b/c he's due an extension, but I think I'd do it for Gortat.

Also my PSU bias was trying to still get Frazier for backup PG and send him there lol.

Yeah, trade board. I don't think Bazz is going to get that big of an extension, and we're cutting salary in the trade.

I think this is an underpay for Gortat, though. And it feels like selling low on Morris. Depends what sort of value WAS would put on Kanter.

But I'm also a big Gortat stan, so IDK. I'd start him over Adams. He's a sublime PnR big and a tremendous defender, and he's got pretty low miles on his body for his age.

Wiz fans are down on him, but he's definitely not better than Adams (though you know my stance there). He hasn't been great defensively this year it seems, but I think off the bench he'd be a souped up Tyson Chandler type.

Considering we've got Roberson who is consistently a net positive when he's on the floor regardless of his inability to shoot, I don't consider this as big an issue.

It is a big issue because we have no one else producing consistent offense at the 3. Abrines is not strong enough to play the 3, Huestis never gonna get a real chance and Kyle singler is well Kyle singler
