Coach Ideas

I'm pretty new to RealGM so I'm not quite sure if this is the place to be making a post like this or if this seems like an overreaction to you guys, but anyway;

I've seen a lot of people say they want Donovan gone after his performance this season and I'm definitely one of them, especially after his showing tonight, what I wanted to know was who's available that you think would be a half decent replacement.

I didn't make this thread to argue whether or not he should be fired, just who you think would be a good replacement for him and why

Thanks guys

Messina is a good coach.

The problem is we have one year to convince George he can win here. There really isn’t time to fix this and still maintain a contending core. Melo is getting older, Russ isn’t that young either. We have one asset with Ferguson. This year was our time.

The good old news is we may be bad enough to do a rebuild and still keep Russ. He won’t be able to lead a team of Grant, Huestis, Abrines and Dakari to the playoffs.

Unless you guys get really lucky, firing Donovan mid season and rolling with an interim (because you aren't pulling away an assistant mid season more than likely) would be waiving bye bye to PG

Reasonably I don't see a way he stays. Better options.

PS. Didn't know you wrote until today, cool stuff!

And sticking with Donovan who has lead the team to under .500 20% of the way through the season is the way to keep him?

Well, in that case, they've got nothing to lose by firing Donovan. I don't think they'll give in this soon though.

And thanks! Just a hobby to get my thoughts out there

They've got a much better chance of him turning it around than some guy who gets thrown into the fire mid season. That's tough.
Some of it is Billy's fault, certainly, but do you really think he's saying "good job Melo, keep up the long two's" or "good job Russ, love the way you're randomly switching from hyper aggressive to super passive"? No. There's issues with coaching, and issues with personnel. No one is going to come in and fix that in the middle of the year.

Firing him in the off-season and being able to do a thorough search for someone who gets a whole off-season is different and I'm behind that

They have a much better chance of finding a good coach in the interim. We know that because Billy isn't a good coach and isn't going to suddenly become one.

That's exactly what Billy has done for two and a quarter years now.

You're right in saying we have a better chance if we wait until the off-season to fire him. That being said I do think that that's exactly what Donovan is doing. He seems reluctant enough to pull under-performing players out of the game, just look at the brick house Russ built tonight, yeah he provided benefits outside of scoring but it still was a net negative and it took him over 10 minutes to pull him out.

He just doesn't learn from his mistakes and seems too passive with his players.

Messina is a good coach, but not the right one. Russ and Melo are tough guys who listen only handful of people. And I'm completely sure they will not listen some european coach no matter how good he is. Same happened with Blatt and Cavs.

If I'm Presti, I would press panic button and fire Donovan. Then bring Mark Jackson, try that way.
There is no other veteran coach who also was a solid player. It needs to be someone who can earn respect of locker room immediately.

As good of a college coach as Dononvan was, I always thought it strange that his success was followed by long periods of mediocrity.

They won't respect Mark Jackson.

Best option would be Coach K !

I think he could be but honestly, the only guy out there that has the stroke to deal with Westbrook and Melo is Pop. He would have no problem sitting their asses if they didn’t get on board.

It’s Presti’s job to find the next pop before someone else does. There are guys out there that could be successful with this roster, it’s just a matter of finding them.

Yeah, but where are they? I mean was Pop even Pop 25 years ago? Even if he was and the Spurs knew what they had at the time, those guys do not come along too often.

Our problem is a lack of a offense system and your solution is to bring in mark Jackson?
