10 days from the draft + free agency starts 2 weeks from today, which means we're closing in on roster turnover season.
Presti made 9 trades last year around this time starting with sending Dennis out right before the draft and capping it with Steve going to New Orleans. While there's almost no chance we see that volume of trades/turnover, it's safe to say the roster will look radically different in a few weeks from where it was at the end of the season.
Roster/contract situation as of 7/19:
Fully guaranteed, non-rookie scale:
Kemba Walker
Lu Dort
Rookie scale:
Shai Gilgeous-Alexander (Year 4, extension eligible)
Aleksej Pokusevski (Year 2)
Darius Bazley (Year 3)
Ty Jerome (Year 3)
Partial/Non-guaranteed:
Theo Maledon (non-guaranteed after upcoming season)
Gabriel Deck (fully non-guaranteed)
Kenrich Williams (non-guaranteed until 12/15)
Isaiah Roby (non-guaranteed until 8/3)
Charlie Brown Jr (fully non-guaranteed)
Two way:
Josh Hall
Jaylen Hoard
Free agents:
Mike Muscala (Early bird)
Tony Bradley (Restricted bird)
Svi Mykhailiuk (Restricted bird)
So while we technically have 11/15 roster spots taken as of now, very few players on this list are locks to be here outside of SGA. The non-guaranteed group especially I would expect to be thinned out, while I wouldn't be surprised to see Muscala and one of Bradley/Svi back.
Early prediction is we have 3 rookies on the roster next season + Vit Krejci + 2 players we absorb as salary dumps, with Deck, CB Jr, Roby all gone.

Hoard was training in OKC today so guess he's likely coming back next season.

I would expect us to keep him until summer league at least (if that is going on)
A chance for him to prove himself or showcase him to another team

Watched Deck with Argentina a couple times now. Nice to see him in a real role and not a fake one where he doesn't talk to his teammates and posts up every possession. He's got a lot of entertainment value considering he's a high motor guy. If he had a decent jumper he'd be worth $15mil a year. I think if they pick up his guarantee he spends most of his minutes at the 3 but there's probably a big roster crunch so who knows.

Charlotte's a fun first game back for fans, crazy we're only a little over 2 months away from preseason kicking off

And summer league before that. It’s going to be tough when we go back to a regular offseason.

When thinking about the international aspect of drafting, do you think it increases TV shares to have a bunch of different international players? You're never going to pull huge domestic TV ratings with OKC, but does it give you any leverage in negotiating TV deals if you have a bunch of different countries tuning in?

Bummer. I was just thinking about that today. Not sure what I’m going to do now. I wonder if it will resurface somewhere else.

Sam asked if they were close to moving up… “you would have to ask those teams if we got close.”
Sam if they were close to trading their pick… “you would have to ask those teams if they got close.”

Been wondering when we'd hear about this. They have become terrible at communicating these sort of events to the local media and fanbase.

Just watched it. All four of them came across really well. I really like this Robinson Earl kid. If basketball doesn't work out I think he can make it as a character actor. I'd like to cast him in a buddy cop drama. Great voice for that role.

I listened to the interviews up until now. One thing I noticed that stood out to me was a response by Sam from a Jenny Carlson question. I’m typing this right after so I’m doing my best to paraphrase accurately.
She asked about the shift from drafting long athletic guys to more skilled cerebral players. One of the things he mentioned was that was more the norm for the league at that time and they built teams to fit their best players strengths. He said at the time we had some special players we were building around. He then shifted to now and said for this rebuild, it’s a “blank slate”.
I can’t help but wonder if that was a bit of an unintentional slip on how he views shai’s future. Maybe I’m reading too much in to it but I fail to see the harm in talking openly about building around Shai if that’s the intention moving forward.
